Fall Vacation

We took a ride down to our beach house in Florida to spend a few days before Thanksgiving.  It's such a great time to be there...it's not hot but also not cold, there are hardly any crowds but most places haven't completely shut down for the winter yet, and bonus - the outlet mall starts it's Black Friday sales the weekend before so we can knock out some good Christmas shopping.

We're getting pretty good at the drive down there.  What we've found works best is to pick the kids up from school/daycare, have a quick dinner, give them baths and put them in pjs, and then hit the road.  They usually watch a movie and then are sound asleep until we get to the hotel that's about 2/3 of the way there.  They get a little bit riled up when we get to the hotel but within an hour we're all settled down and in bed asleep.

We take our time in the morning getting ready and enjoying breakfast at the hotel.  We've even been known to take a dip in the indoor pool before hitting the road.  With just three hours left in our drive, we usually roll into town just in time for lunch.  This trip was no exception.  We stopped in Seaside at Bud & Ally's Pizza and the weather was PERFECT.  We sat outside on their patio and had a delicious lunch.

So very thankful for these two cuties!

It was a great day to walk around and enjoy the little town.

On vacation, we have ice cream by the pool before taking a nap!

Now, for me, the highlight of this quick trip was the next morning when Mom and I took the kids to Fired Up Seaside to paint some pottery.  The guys were playing golf and it was slightly overcast so it seemed like a good way to spend the morning.  We were thrilled to have the place to ourselves!  I had never done anything like this before and it was right up my alley.  I would even go back without the kids somtime! :)

First we had to paint the backgrounds of our pieces three times, drying it with the hairdryer in between coats.

I picked them each a design that was kid-friendly so they could do most of it themselves.  For Katie Wynn's platter, we made our family into reindeer using our thumb prints.  It was a good thing we had the place to ourselves since Thomas screamed through me dipping his thumb in the paint.  Poor guy doesn't like having his hands dirty.

Thomas just had to fill the bottom of his Christmas tree bowl with paint chips that would get melted down once it was fired.

I helped Katie Wynn with the details on the reindeer, but she really did a lot of it herself.  She did so great!  Later she and I alternated doing polka dots around the edge.

Both kids were proud of their pieces!  And I was proud of them!

Here are their pieces before and after going into the kiln and being glazed.  I LOVE them and am so excited to have them out every Christmas!

On this trip, we only spent a total of about 15 minutes at the beach.

Other than a pretty full day of shopping, I honestly don't know where the rest of our time on this trip went.  It always seems to fly right by!  At some point we went swimming...

...and my favorite people did some pretty cute hand holding.

We woke up to a cold snap on our last day there so it was a good thing we had packed our cozy sweatshirts!

Thomas rocked the static look on our journey back home.

Every trip to and from our beach house, we pass this really cool old school house.  At least, that's what I call it.  I have no idea what it originally was.  And every time I ooh and ahh over it and say I want to move it to our town.  When we passed it on our drive home, I said, "One of these days I want to stop and look at that building."  Matt said, "Why not now?"  And so we turned around and did just that.  Mark my words, this will be mine one day.  (In my dreams, anyway.)

I am so glad we stopped because it is so much cooler and so much BIGGER in person than when just whizzing past in your car.  And, it's actually still in use.  Some men's prayer group uses it weekly, or at least that's how I interpreted their sign.  The doors all have new locks on them (yep, I tried to go in).  And because of how it's built up, the windows are way too high to see into.  I was able to sit on Matt's shoulders and see inside the windows on the far left (around the corner in the picture above).  Gah!  I seriously LOVE this building!!

So now I spend a lot of time daydreaming about where I would put the building and what I would do about it.  Of course, there are small details to work out like who I could buy it from, how much it would cost, and how the heck I'd move it approximately seven hours away.  Like I said, small details.  Anyone ever move a building before?  How much does that cost?  I'm kicking myself for not taking a picture of the sign so I could look up some contact info...

We made it back in time for Thanksgiving.  I'll be writing an update on the rest of our month of November next!

October Phone Pics

Flipping back through pictures, we had a lot of fun in October! It's one of my very favorite months - the weather is usually so nice, I can officially start dressing my kids in pumpkin clothing, and there are so many fun fall activities.

Early in the month, we invited some friends over to paint pumpkins with us.  It was a rainy day so we had to do it on our front porch - the driest outside area at our house.

This is exactly how I pictured our bar when we purchased the house - full of kids eating and laughing together!

Since Katie Wynn's birthday is at the end of September, we had some new toys to play with during October.  One of them was a new water table for our patio.  They love playing with it!

Sitting in the water table and spitting on your sibling are not necessarily encouraged, but they happen.

Speaking of birthday presents, Matt's mom made Katie Wynn the most awesome mermaid tail blanket I've ever seen!  The details are amazing!

I'm lucky that Katie Wynn lets me wear the mermaid tail sometimes.  :)

Speaking of Lala (Matt's mom), she has a birthday during October so we spent a Sunday morning making her birthday cards.  I love the watercolor artwork the kids did!

IMG_7874.JPG

Katie Wynn's card reads: "Poppa, Lala - I love you - Jesus - scribble/drawing - Katie Wynn."  I helped Thomas sign his name on his card.  :)

During October, Matt's grandfather moved out of his apartment and into Matt's aunt's house.  We sent him a card too the week that he moved.  Katie Wynn told me exactly what to write, and I wrote it lightly in pencil for her to trace.

One Saturday we had not one but TWO birthday parties at inflatable bounce house places.  That's a good way to wear everyone - especially Daddy - out!  Both parties started with him having to carry them up the slides and go with them, but they both got brave enough to do it themselves too.  Scroll through the pictures below.  Look closely, one of Thomas's trips down the slide was with Poppy!

Thomas's love for women's shoes is still going strong.  Mine usually get stolen every evening.

We had our first "family project" for school due this month.  We had to decorate a scarecrow together using stuff around the house.  We covered ours in paper and a cut up sock and added buttons and fabric patches.  Katie Wynn named him Beebo and was proud to take him to school with her.

In the middle of the month, I took Katie Wynn to get her hair cut off.  It was the worst hair cut I've ever seen!  One side was a solid inch and half longer than the other.  Seriously, other people noticed it and mentioned it.  I trimmed on it for three nights in a row trying to get it evened up.  It could still use some shaping up but it's decent now.

She also had spirit week during October and got to wear some fun outfits to school.  For Monday's Crazy Sock Day, she and her best friend Addi Clare shared two pairs of socks.

Hat Day was Tuesday.

Wednesday was Tie Dye Day and I scrambled to make her a shirt on Sunday since we didn't own anything tie-dyed.  Thursday was T-Shirt and Jeans Day and officially the first time for her to wear real jeans.

Friday was Team Spirit Day and I decided to participate too so we could be twinkies. :)

During October, Thomas discovered Katie Wynn's pink leopard print leotard, and it has become his very favorite thing to put on.  He loves rubbing his belly while he has on the slick spandex material.

With all our busy-ness, we managed to squeeze in an ice cream date and an afternoon at the playground.

They ate bananas like the monkeys they are, and KW cuddled up with her cousin Jett to watch YouTube videos.

I'll wrap this post up with the pumpkin clothing I mentioned at the very beginning.  I love fall clothes!

Actually I'll wrap it up for real with this last grainy, blurry picture that was so cute in real life.  My mom plays the piano during our church services and one Sunday the sweetest little boy sat with her for the closing song.  He was so still and quiet sitting up there with her!

Halloween

Halloween was on a Monday this year, which means it lasted FOREVER.  We had approximately 28 opportunities to wear costumes and candy was just thrown at us for days....everything from a costume party to a parade to trunk or treat to a carnival.  Plus trick-or-treating on the day of.  Thomas only wore his costume for about 6 minutes while screaming his head off, but at least we got a picture.

This year's family-themed costumes came from Katie Wynn's announcement that she was going to be a shark.  Why?  Who the heck knows.  She decided it a few weeks out and held to it, so a shark costume is what I bought.  Thomas loves Finding Nemo so an orange blowfish was perfect to go with her shark get up, right?  He hated it.  Matt and I threw on some fishermen accessories and called it a day.

Two fishermen in a boat set out to sea
and what they caught in their nets you wouldn’t believe!
A friendly grey shark with a tail that could swish,
and right beside it, an unhappy blowfish!

Let's rewind a couple of days.  To kick off the Halloween weekend, we carved a couple pumpkins.  While wearing matching outfits 'cause that's how we roll.

One of the pumpkins we carved was one that had been painted a few weeks earlier.  Four 4-year-olds went to town on it with some paint and just mixed all the colors together.  So it's not actually rotten, it just has gross paint all over it.

We attended a spaghetti supper and carnival at Katie Wynn's school.  While Matt served spaghetti, the kids and I went to play games.  Except they were being way too shy to play any games.  All they did was ride on these little scooters over in an empty corner.  If you can't tell from their outfits, it was really warm for Halloween this year.

The next day was our neighborhood's parade.  Thomas was still napping when it started so I sent the shark and her fisherman to the float without us.

Shark BITE!!!

Shark BITE!!!

Thomas woke up in time for us to stand and watch the parade go by and we were literally pelted by handfuls candy.  We collected so much candy we didn't have to buy any for trick-or-treaters!

We decorated our car for trunk or treat at church that night.  I hate that I didn't get any pictures because Matt made a cute ring toss for the kids to play to win candy.

Before we left to go trick-or-treating the next night, my sweet boy posed with our carved pumpkins on our front porch.  Isn't he the cutest?

Since we were going to be out doing our own candy collecting, we were that house with a bowl of it sitting out for the taking.  Surprisingly, not much of it was gone when we returned!

We met up with our group of friends over at the Schwartz's house to eat dinner before loading up in the trailer.  Katie Wynn the shark and Addi Clare, aka Bat Girl, were ready to go!

Our trick-or-treat group also included Levi as Jake the Pirate, Mason as the conductor for the Polar Express, and baby William as the cutest gumball machine I ever did see.

Our neighborhood is huge but the houses are kinda far apart for little legs.  It's always bumper-to-bumper trailers and four wheelers and golf carts full of kids in costumes, and it's so much fun!

IMG_8435.JPG

We made a stop at our own house (to refill the cooler, ha!) and Matt took pictures of the kids getting their candy.  It was fun to get to see them use our new front walk!

We all had so much fun that night but by the end of it, I was SO ready for Halloween to be over.  But, since Katie Wynn attends a Catholic school, her fall party wasn't until the next day and she had to dress up as a saint for All Saints Day! Gah!  We chose Saint Laura who, according to the worksheet KW brought home, was the Saint of Victory or something like that.  Katie Wynn wore her Olympics shirt from her party with a couple gold medals and boom!  Done.

That night we all crashed into a sugar coma from all the candy consumed and said goodbye to Halloween 2016!

Girls' Weekend

Every October, the men in my family go on a boys' retreat where they spend the weekend fishing, golfing, cooking out, playing cards, and probably other things I'd rather not know about.  And they leave all the kids home with us girls.  For the last couple of years, the kids and I have stayed with my Mom at her house and had a girls (plus Thomas) weekend.  This year our weekend without the Dads was full of fun!

Friday night we ate outside at a pizza restaurant.  While Mom stayed at our table and waited for our food, I took the [antsy] kids on a walk to a nearby boardwalk on the river.

It was a fun adventure and the kids were great eaters at the pizza place.  The next morning, after Mom made us all pancakes, we hit the road headed to the pumpkin patch.  We went to the same one we visited two years ago and loved it again.  We played tether ball, fed animals at the petting zoo, slid down an enormous slide, road a train, picked out pumpkins, and so much more!

IMG_7924.JPG

We brought a picnic lunch with us which was definitely the way to go.

After lunch, we took a hayride to the pumpkin field where the kids got to pick out two pumpkins each.

Here they are with the pumpkin ruler from this year and two years ago.  My, how they've grown!

Later that afternoon, after some much needed naps at home, we conquered the world!  In puzzle form.

Since Mom and I were too zapped to do anything for dinner, we dined in at a fancy little restaurant called Wendy's.  The kids loved it, and we all enjoyed playing with the prize from their kids' meals!

This picture of Thomas makes me laugh every time.  And that's "homework" he did on his hand, in case you were wondering.

We made it to church the next morning and afterwards, I got possibly my favorite picture of the two kids together ever.

We had a really good girls plus Thomas weekend, but we were still pretty excited when the boys arrived back home!  Now, when do all the Mamas get to go away for the weekend? :)

September Phone Pics

Let's not even talk about how late this post is.  Back in September, Katie Wynn turned four, we hosted the Olympic Games, and...

...we called the Hogs.

...Thomas helped his Daddy cheer on the Irish.

...we wore Patriotic colors to church for Labor Day.

IMG_7317.JPG

...the kids ate their broccoli,

and then we offset that healthiness with ice cream for dessert.

...we went to the doctor for well check-ups and the kids had the stinkiest feet ever.

...we held the teeniest tiniest little caterpillar.

...we enjoyed our first dinner with nice weather out on our new patio.

...we played at Addi Clare's water-themed birthday party.

...I caught Thomas lathered in lotion on my couch!

...Thomas looked pitiful in time out.

...Katie Wynn and I had a date to get manicures and pedicures.

...the kids spent an afternoon playing one of MY favorite childhood games - cash register!

...we had a really good month!!
