DIY: Four Frames

Confession: I started this DIY project when I was still pregnant.  My baby is eight months old now so yeah, it's taken me a while to get it finished.  Oopsie. If you've been reading for a while, you may remember that when we were preparing to move into our current house, I said the only two rooms I was focusing on were the nursery and our master bedroom.  Well, the nursery was a success.  As for the master, I bought new bedding and that's about it.  The bedding colors were really hard to match and I was running out of steam.

One afternoon I decided I'd just make some frames out of scrap wood and paint them to match the bedding.  Most everything in our room is a neutral gray except for the pops of color in our pillow shams, and I wanted to bring those colors out somewhere else.

I found some scrap wood and cut it down to 16 boards of equal length (four boards for each frame, four frames total).  I angled the edges using our miter saw and then used a kreg jig to attach them on the back side of the frames.

The saw blade on our miter saw is not the best for this step, so wood putty is always my best friend.  Fill those cracks and no one will know any different.

Here's the view of the front after all four pieces had been attached and the seams wood-puttied.

Next, I dug out some scrap molding and cut it down to size.  I only had three different styles so two are just alike.  I mitered the edges the same way as above, but for these I just used wood glue to hold them together.  They are slightly smaller than the opening of the frame above.

My next step was to put a base layer of paint on each of the 8 frames (4 large frame bases, 4 frames of molding).  I had already had some paint color-matched to our pillow shams and brushed a coat on each piece.  I must've been too lazy to take a picture of this step.

That's when I hit the pause button.  For a really long time.  Like, long enough to have a baby and her grow for about 6 months...

Finally, I revisited this project so I could finish it.  My plan all along had been to stencil some designs on each frame so they wouldn't be so plain.

I started with the dark teal frame and used white paint to stencil on a leopard (cheetah?) print.  Don't judge.  I was limited in my stencil choices.

As you can see, I'm not a very good (read: patient) stenciler and had a lot of bleed through.  Not a big deal since I was also planning on doing some sanding in the next step.

Since I didn't really have any other good stencils, I taped off some stripes with painter's tape on the lighter blue frame.  I painted the stripes with white paint.

I also taped stripes on the white frame and painted on some tan stripes.

For the fourth and final frame, I used a sponge stencil and added white diamonds to the tan frame.  This one drives me nuts because I didn't get my spacing centered.  Gah!

The molding frames just stayed a solid color.  After the stenciled designs were dry, I gave all four frames a good sanding to distress them a little bit, and then glued the molding frames onto the base frames.  The molding frames being just a little bit smaller than the opening in the big frame created a little lip to hold in a picture.

I switched up the colors when I added the molding so that they'd all coordinate.

After sanding and adding a quick coat of polyurethane.

To finish them off, I added a claw picture hanger to the back of each one.

There was another pause that lasted about a month until I finally got around to hanging them up in our room.  To get my spacing right, I rolled out a long piece of brown craft paper and lined them up on it.  I used a ruler to make sure they were centered and evenly spaced.  Once they were in the right spot, I traced around them and added a dot where the nail should go.

Just as I was finishing marking the last one, my little helper came in to show me how she would do it if it were her project.  I didn't have the heart to tell her that was a pretty dumb way to figure out picture frame spacing.

I hung my brown paper on the wall and let gravity help me get it hanging straight.  That wrinkled part at the bottom was my helper's contribution.

Since I had marked my nail holes on the paper, all I had to do was tap four nails in directly through the paper.

Then I just ripped off the paper and hung the frames up!  I don't love, love them but I'm ok with them.  I do love that we finally have something up on the wall and that it adds some color.

At some point, one of my helpers (my money's on the furry one) ran off with one of my cardboard backing squares.  That's why the second one down is empty.

I suppose the very last step is to put pictures in the frames.  Nope, still haven't done that, even though they've been hanging up for about three weeks now.  I just can't decide which ones to use!

And I still owe you a tour of our room, especially since it's where we spend the majority of our time.  It's far from finished, but I guess I could do an in-progress post.  Maybe I'll work on that this week...

Another Bell Performance

Our Handbell Quartet performed at church again this past Sunday.  The song is called Praise Him! Praise Him! and was not really our favorite.  Warning - it gets kinda long.  We had very little time to actually practice so it's a miracle we pulled it off.  It was far from perfect, but good enough for a holiday weekend when the sanctuary wasn't packed! This recording is not from the actual performance, but instead is one of our run-throughs before church started.  Ignore the mistakes; I think we actually did better during our real performance.

Family Fun Weekend

Last weekend Doc's parents were here for a visit.  The last time they were here, Katie Wynn was just barely sitting up on her own, and now she's crawling all over the place and pulling up on everything.  I think they agree that she's grown up a lot in just two months!  Thank goodness for my mother-in-law, Patricia, who snapped pics throughout the weekend.  She gets credit for most of the photos in this post. They arrived late Wednesday afternoon so they were able to keep KW all day Thursday while we were both at work.  They spent some time playing on the floor with the giant ballapalooza.  I love this photo below because it looks like Katie Wynn is sitting indian-style.

Doggie kisses from Lolli!  This is a regular occurrence at our house.

Standing up to play with her toy.  I love a good ruffle on the booty. :)

Bill (Poppa) spent a lot of time helping KW learn to hold her bottle herself.

She knows how to fold it fine, but usually it's more like this.  She doesn't know how to tilt it back so she can get the milk.

Just feeding herself like a big girl!

We're learning that we have to be very careful with where we set things.  Now, instead of just Lolli trying to sniff out some food on the coffee table, there's an extra set of hands going for it too.

I hate that this picture turned out blurry.  Katie Wynn was hanging out with me while I got ready for the day, and found my stash of velcro rollers.  I tried to put one in her hair and barely caught it on camera before it slid right out.

Bill and Pat were sweet enough to keep all three kids (and Lolli!) for a good portion of the day Saturday so that Doc and I could go to a wedding.  Judging from the pictures, I'd say they had a pretty good afternoon!  Looks like there was a walk and some bike-riding.

Some basketball playing by the boys.

And some hanging out in the bed of the truck for the girls.

This orange monkey is officially Katie Wynn's favorite toy.  She loves it!  Unfortunately, so does Lolli so that gets a little tricky sometimes.  Orange Monkey has velcro on his hands so he can hang on things.  Sunday afternoon he was hanging on to Katie for a piggy back ride.

I'm not really sure she realized where he was.

Late that afternoon we spent some time hanging out on the back patio.

There are times when her cuteness just overwhelms me.  This was one of those times.

Sadly, Lala and Poppa had to hit the road back home Monday morning.  But not before some quick playing time.  Katie Wynn was sporting her trendy pocket tee like all the big girls around here wear.

That's it for last weekend's recap.  Like I said, I didn't get out my camera so I'm so thankful to Bill and Pat for capturing all of these moments!  It was a great, family-filled weekend!

Mother's Day

Ok, I'm playing catch up with pictures from Mother's Day a couple weeks ago.  Like last year, my sister-in-law Beth hosted us all for lunch after church.  We weren't just celebrating my Mom; we were celebrating the birthdays of my brother Nick and my nephew Jett too. We were the first to arrive and were greeted by this cutie-patootie.

She's in a phase right now where she always wants to make a silly face picture (followed by "lemme see!).  I officially volunteer to be in charge of the slideshow at her wedding rehearsal dinner...I'm pretty sure I'll have lots of "good" pictures by then.

Bren and her Mama.

And her Mama's sissy, Shea.  Shea is getting married this year and Bren is going to be her flower girl princess.  She's excited!

Speaking of princesses, ours was sound asleep.

So I carried on with my photoshoot of Bren with everybody else.

Sweet brother and sister.

My outfit screams Accountant.  I may never wear it again.

Also?  I really need a tan.  Bren is pretty stinkin' cute though.

Never a dull moment with my Dad.  (How do you photograph people who wear glasses?  Tricky.)

Here is Nick opening the gift we got him (new shirt).

Jett opened his gift from us (wii game) at the same time.

Birthday boys with their birthday loot.

Mom opening her first gift from us.

It was a new cell phone cover with a picture of all seven of her grandbabies.

She was pretty excited about her second gift from us.  I can't wait to show it to you guys.  Post and tutorial coming soon.

Guess who woke up in time to enjoy some of the party?

Just watching all the excitement.  I think her face has been covered in drool/slobber for the last three months straight.

The only picture I got of Uncle Ben was when he was making silly faces at Katie bug.  (We missed Aunt Erin who was home with a sick baby Ramer!)

Birthday boys again.  I can't believe Jett is 8 years old!!

These two were first to the table for cake time.

That's right, keep 'em coming, kids.  Just more good photos for the slideshow...

Jett had had a birthday party with his friends the day before, so this cake was more geared towards Nick.  He attended some of the Masters golf tournament this year so Beth ordered a Masters cake.

They blew out all the candles!  (Probably with some sneaky help from Bren.)

And that was it!  After stuffing our faces with cake, we all split up and went our separate ways.  My Mother's Day started out with breakfast in bed and a bike ride with my two favorites.  Then we attended a good church service, had a yummy lunch with all my family, and spent the rest of the afternoon being lazy.  A pretty good first Mother's Day if you ask me!

Babies in a Bucket

A couple weeks ago, Katie Wynn and I got to have an all-day playdate with this precious little girl!

That's Addi Clare and she's just five days older than KW.  Her mama and I have decided they will be BFFs. :)

Actually, we had a triple-playdate because Ballerina Bren (and Mimi) came over to play too!

You may remember from my sewing post that I had made a couple of matching reversible dresses.  Well, Addi Clare is who the other one was for, so I made sure her mom packed hers in her bag so we could have a photoshoot!

These next three pictures in a row crack me up because they're facial expressions are so in sync!

When we first started, they were both in the mood to chat.

"Hey Mom."

A few camera clicks in and I realized we were right in the middle of Addi Clare's nap time.  Rats!

My mom held her while I continued shooting pics of Katie Wynn.

I just love her silly little grins.

Did I mention that this galvanized tub may be my new favorite photoshoot prop?  I'm kinda wishing I had used it for monthly pictures.

I love this one!

Since her dress was reversible, it only took me a second to flip it over for an all new look.

These faces make me smile too.  I think she was watching Lolli get in trouble for running off.[gallery ids="8968,8969,8970"]

This one's in the running for my favorite one.

Ooh, or this one.  I just can't decide.

I'm so glad I caught this shot because you can see how cute the back of her top is and the coordinating bloomers!  Don't worry, she did not topple over.

I just wanna kiss all over that bare back, neck, and shoulders!  I have a feeling I'm going to love summer clothes.

Inspecting the grass.

Laughing at her Mimi.

We flipped Addi Clare's dress over too and put her back in for more pictures.  Did I mention it was her nap time?

I think this picture is absolutely precious!! If they are long-time BFFs, this one will definitely have to be on their senior yearbook page or something.  Just two babies hangin' out in a bucket.

Mom and I picked up the bucket by the handles and turned them around.

Sweet, sweet babies.

How many more ways can I use this bucket?? Maybe with a bunch of flowers for her May photo??
