Baby Mobile

It's been a while since we had a craft project around here, hasn't it?  My sincere apologies!  I assure you, though, that we are still crafting away.  I just haven't had time to document much lately.  And it takes much longer to complete a project.  I can't imagine why! With all that said, today's craft project comes from back before Miss Katie Wynn graced us with her presence.  In the very near future, I will be packing it away and I just realized that I hadn't even shared it with you all yet!  And that's a shame because it's really cute.

Remember the antique bassinet that I purchased back in the summer and spruced up?  Well, as cute as it is on its own, it still needed a little something to make it even cuter.  I may have even mentioned in that post that I had plans to add a mobile.  Plans I had.  Time and energy I did not.  I had made my dear sweet mother very aware of my plans.  We had even talked through the process and purchased supplies.  But, between moving houses and being very pregnant, I could not make myself get this one last project done.

So my mom did it for me.  Isn't she the best?

The plan was birds.  Yep, just birds.  I wanted it simple and sweet.  And white and pink.  While I was at work, Mom cut the cutest little bird shape out of pink and white felt.  Each bird shape then got a wing in the opposite color added to it and decorated with some cute tiny buttons.  She made two sides per bird, added a little stuffing between them, and then hand-stitched them together.  The circle that they're hanging from is an embroidery hoop that she covered in white yarn.

Excuse the crazy shadows that the lattice wicker from the bassinet casts.  For the last six months, the bassinet has sit in a little corner in our room.  Our master has a sitting room that's divided by a small wall and the wall made the perfect little nook for our peanut to sleep in.

Full disclosure: I did a lot of picking up to take that picture.

Let's focus on those little birdies, shall we?

Cute little things, aren't they?  There are six total - three white and three pink.

I couldn't help but lay down so I could see how the mobile looked from Katie's point of view.

I mean, I wouldn't mind watching those birds fly over my head.  Would you?  The best part is that it weighed virtually nothing, so I had absolutely zero fear of it hurting her if it ever fell.  Not that it could have fallen, but still.

Anyway, now that Katie Wynn's sleeping in the crib in her room, we don't have much need for the bassinet in our bedroom anymore.  I already have a piece of furniture that I'm going to refinish to take it's spot in the bedroom.  And when it goes, the birdie mobile will too.  Sad day.  I'd love to hang it in her room, I'm just not sure where it could go.  Hmmm...I may have to do some brainstorming.

A Manly Party

Back in January, my dad turned 60!  To celebrate, we had a party.  (Yes, I'm way behind in posting these pictures.)  Long time readers may remember that a year and half ago, we had a big blowout party to celebrate Mom's milestone birthday.  It was only natural that she wanted to do the same for him.  Only it couldn't be the same, you know?  We actually started our brainstorming last spring.  Our first idea was to send Dad and the boys to the Masters tournament but even with all of us registering our email addresses to win tickets, we didn't win a single one.  The next plan was to rent a couple of houses at the beach in the same neighborhood as our beach house and invite several couples on a weekend getaway to the beach.  We really thought this was going to work out until about three weeks out everyone started telling Mom they weren't going to be able to make it.  So we ditched that idea, sprung into action and planned a quick, last-minute surprise party.  Party location?  My house.  Eek! As you know, we've only been in our house for a few months so there are still lots of empty rooms.  Mom and I decided that would work out just fine...more room to mingle!  But how the heck do you decorate for a manly party?  Flowers and candles seemed way too girly.  So we put our heads together, did some brainstorming, and decided to let Dad's favorite whisky bottle be our inspiration.  My dad is not a huge drinker at all, but if he does choose to have a drink, it's usually going to be a glass of Maker's Mark mixed with water.  You know I like to take a theme and go crazy with it, so I quickly sent out an email to all my friends asking for their empty liquor bottles.  I mean, we were just days past the holiday season so I figured there might be a few bottles hanging around.  And I was right.  :)  Thanks to all of my friends that delivered on the goods!

No better way to set the scene than to start with some shots of the decor, so let me show you how we set things up for this shindig.  The invitation we mailed out mimics a Jack Daniels bottle label.  Not Maker's Mark, I know, but we had a tight deadline.  After settling on our theme, I learned that my brother is a member of some Maker's Mark club and gets all kinds of freebies from them.  So he gave us a bunch of MM gift bags and tissue paper that we used with all the liquor bottles to decorate.  (Maker's Mark did not sponsor this post, but I guess in a roundabout way they kinda sponsored the party.  Or at least the decorations.)

As I showed you in my living room post, we still don't have anything up on the freshly painted mantel.  So we grabbed a bunch of liquor bottles - some empty, some full - and set it up to resemble a bar.  We didn't have enough to completely fill the mantel, but some red tulle ribbon helped fill in the gaps.  (Sorry for the smaller-than-normal pictures; I got a little carried away when resizing.)

Also in the living room is this cocktail table, where we added more bottles and some old pictures of Dad.

Our entry hall is pretty big (as far as entry halls go, I suppose) and still very empty.  We set up two card tables so guests could sit and eat and talk (chairs were added to the tables after these pictures).  Mom and I had purchased this fabric off a remnants table to make tablecloths.  It's a little bit mismatched, but we thought the colors went well with the reds and yellows in a Maker's Mark bottle.  Plus, there was nothing girly about the print, so double-win!

Our dining room is also still empty, so we had to set up a long folding table for the food.  A little bit embarrassing with all of my Dad's friends there, but whaddaya gonna do?  (Doc wouldn't let me run out and buy a rug and dining table just for the party...I checked. :) )

I do have a cute new little bar, though, that we used for all the plates and things.

The kitchen table had a centerpiece of more bottles, and we spread out lots of Dad's old yearbooks and school newspapers.  Everyone loved looking through them, especially since many of the guests were in them too!

We had ordered a couple boxes of airplane sized bottles of Maker's Mark, and the little boxes they came in were perfect little containers for mixed nuts.

One of my very favorite decorations was this display:

Yes, folks, for a very brief period of time, my dad rocked a mustache.  And we paid tribute to it with a stand full of chocolate 'staches.

A party's not a party without favors, and that's what we used those mini airplane bottles for.  My dad has served on the local school board for many years and every year has to have his picture taken for the yearbook.  A school photo, if you will.  And every year he gets mailed a package of prints - you know, a couple 5x7s, one 8x10, and a couple sheets of wallets - and every single year he says "What the heck am I going to do with these?"  Mom was able to find several years' worth of wallets that didn't get thrown away, and we decided it was high time we did something with 'em.  So we attached a wallet sized picture of Dad on every single mini bottle of Maker's Mark. :)

Also attached was a chocolate cigar.  Dad's also been a cigar smoker for years so Mom and I bought cigar-shaped candy molds and made these the week before.

So that's how we decorated.  Now let's get to the party!

It was sort of a surprise party.  It was a surprise in that we didn't tell Dad about it beforehand.  But there was no big moment where we all jumped out from behind something and yelled "Surprise!"  That's because there was no way to hide all the cars.  Mom had told Dad the morning of the party that we (the kids) had all gotten babysitters so that we could go out to eat somewhere nice for his birthday.  The plan was that she and Dad were going to pick up me and Doc on their way to the undisclosed restaurant.  Of course, as soon as Dad rounded the corner to our house and saw all of the cars, he knew we weren't going out to eat.

Here they are making their entrance.  I believe Dad was giving Mom heck because he had told her he didn't want any big party for his birthday.

We kids were in the mudroom area to greet him first.

Dad finally made it into the kitchen to see all of his friends and, in typical Dad fashion, thanked them all for being there and then apologized for having already made other plans and "really wished he could stay and visit," then turned around and pretended to leave.

I'll spare you ALL the pictures from the party, but here are some snapshots of the people that regularly appear on this little blog.

About midway through the party, we corralled all the guests into the kitchen so Mom could present Dad's gift to him.  I wonder if Dad always cringes like that when Mom starts talking...

As for his gift, we copied this awesome idea and sent out letters to all of Dad's old and current friends, colleagues, classmates, and family members asking them to jot down stories or memories of him.  We put each submission in it's own envelope and then numbered the envelopes.  We had 60 envelopes full of 60-years worth of memories.  Obviously Dad couldn't sit down and read them all during the party, but we still went ahead and presented them to him and he stayed up into the wee hours of the night going through them after party.  (As the collector of the memories, I got to read them all in advance and believe me when I say there were some pretty funny stories!!)

Dad seemed touched and gave a toast to all his friends.

After his toast, we sang Happy Birthday and cut into the cake.  The cake was made by two of my friends from high school - and husband and wife baking duo - and they did an awesome job with it!

We also took a quick family picture.

At Mom's party, we had a mock photo booth area with lots of props.  We wanted to do the same for this party, but instead of gathering hats and wigs and boas as props, we ordered a set of these paper props on sticks.

There are some awesome pictures of the guests with the props, but this one of me and my brothers is hands-down my favorite one.  I had no idea they weren't smiling either...totally unplanned.

Here are some more photo booth pics...

By the end of the night, there were a lot of people at the party with mustaches...

(Some of the men had brought their own.)

All in all, it was a really fun night!  It was a little weird having my house full of people that were, ahem, a little bit older than me but it was more than worth it to be able to celebrate Dad!  Heck, I'd do it all over again.  Maybe at 70, Dad?

As much fun as it was partying with the old folks Dad's friends, my very favorite part of the night was when this sweet pea came back home!  Thanks again, Kim, for babysitting her during the party!

And with that, we called it a night.  :)

Random Ramblings

Woo!  This "loose" goal of posting twice a week is catching up with me and it's only the first full week in the Lenten season.  Crap!  So this post is coming at ya on the last day of the week just to satisfy that challenge.  I'll have a real post with pictures for you soon.

  • My hair is falling out.  Like, by the handfull.  It's ridiculous and starting to scare me.  Seriously, at the rate it's coming out, I'll be bald by my 30th birthday next month.  I had heard of this happening after pregnancy, but I thought since it hadn't happened by the time I went back to work that I had escaped that side effect.  Now I dread washing my hair and then blow dry it because of the massive amounts of hair that I have to throw away afterwards.  Gross, I know.  How do I make it stop?
  • Here's something I think is crazy that I was talking to someone about this week: how there are times in your life when you see someone so much that you start to form a good relationship and then, when their job is done, you just never see or talk to them again.  Like a realtor, for example.  I passed our realtor on the road the other day and realized that we hadn't actually spoken to him since we closed on the house.  For months we were in constant communication with him, sometimes talking to him multiple times a day.  Then we got the house, he sent us a baby gift, and that was that.  Same with my doctor.  She kept me sane through my whole pregnancy and by the time you get down to weekly appointments, you've developed a good relationship.  She would ask about more than just the baby - how the house hunt was going, etc.  She wasn't on call the night we had Katie Wynn, nor did I get to see her when I went back for my 6-week checkup, so the last time I actually saw her was 5 days before delivery.  I wonder if she's curious about how our baby is and what we named her.  Or is it that just part of it when you have a job like that?  I guess one baby is just like every other baby when you're delivering them every day?  The person I was discussing this with is a new hire in our department.  Another similar situation - you have lots of communication with a representative from HR, you get the job, spend a week doing paperwork with them, and then never talk to them again.  At least that's how it is in our office.  I have nothing profound to say about this, I just think it's kinda weird.  Use 'em and lose 'em, I guess.
  • I have completely missed this season of The Bachelor.  I did not intend for this to happen.  Bummer.
  • My incredibly sweet husband is treating me to a trip to Puerto Rico for my birthday.  In less than three weeks we'll be beach side (and probably sunburned)!  I can't wait; I need some sunshine in my life.  His parents are coming to take care of the baby while we're gone.  I know that she'll be wonderfully cared for, but I'm sure I will still miss her like crazy!
  • Speaking of being on the beach, I need a good book recommendation.  It's been almost a full year since the last time I read a book.  In fact, I decided to keep up with what I'd read by listing them over on the sidebar to the right and then didn't pick up another one after posting the list.  I guess that's par for the course of a new mom.  It's very possible that whatever book I read on this vacation is the only one I'll get to read all year, so it needs to be a good one.  Suggestions?
  • I'm becoming addicted to my mom's embroidery machine.  I've been watching tutorials online and we're learning so much!  This probably deserves a post of its own, but suffice it to say that Katie Wynn's gonna be a walking monogram for the first few years of her life.
  • I'm also becoming addicted to pimento cheese.
  • I haven't really followed up on the whole back-to-work transition, but it has really been pretty good.  I'm working three days a week and have a couple days at home with my sweet girl.  I have really hit the jackpot with this setup; it's the best of both stay-at-home-mom and working-mom worlds.  So far, I couldn't be happier.
  • A friend of ours does custom framing and is having a little "shop sale" in a few weeks.  She asked my mom and I if we'd be willing to come and sell some stuff too, to attract more customers and what have you.  There are a couple other girls coming too - one does monogramming and appliques and the other makes those burlap door hangers.  Every bit of our free time has been spent getting a few things ready so we can contribute.  We're making anything that's quick and easy to crank out!  I'll post some pictures soon.  If any of you locals would like to attend the shop sale, leave a comment and I'll send you the details.

I'm sure there's much more that I could ramble on about, but if I'm going to give you a real post with pictures this week, then I've got to get busy uploading and editing them!  (Or maybe not editing, we'll see what time allows.)  What are you guys up to?  Anybody else losing their hair?

A New Trick

Katie Wynn has a new trick.  Actually, she has several.  Most were expected - she's starting to roll over, getting close to sitting up on her own, etc.  But THIS one, this one that she mastered yesterday, was one I never saw coming. She started working on it a couple weeks ago.  While in her car seat, she loves to lean forward or arch her back so that someone will pick her up and get her out.  She must've discovered that when she arches her back several times in a row, she eventually slides down until she's laying on the "seat" part of the car seat, like so:

(Sidenote: obviously this little trick takes place when she's not actually buckled into her carseat...which is maybe when we're hanging out in the kitchen or somewhere and I'm right beside her, and NEVER in the car.)

I had told my mom about this little "slide down in the car seat" trick that she was working on and was thrilled on this particular day when she started doing it again and I had my camera nearby.

So anyway, once down in that position, she would then throw her legs down...

...in an attempt to get those legs out and onto whatever surface her carseat was sitting on.  And everytime she aaaaaalllllmost made it before her Mommy scooped her up and scooted her back up in her seat.

Poor thing.  After working so hard to get that far, I just put her right back where she started.

Like me, my mom thought the pics of this little talent of hers were pretty funny, but yesterday my mom finally got to see Katie's moves in person!  The three of us were all out in the woodshop; Mom and I were taking turns doing some painting and playing with Katie.  I set Katie back down in her carseat for a few minutes while we both had a paintbrush in our hands, and off she went...first arching that back til she scooted down and then throwing those legs back and forth, inchin' her way out of the seat.  Mom bent down, picked her up, and put her back in her seat, just so she could start the whole process all over again.

The last time she started doing it, I told Mom I'd pick her up as soon as I finished painting this one last thing...

...only to turn around to see that that little stinker had finally gotten all the way out of her seat!

She seemed quite pleased with herself.

Sigh...I guess that's the end of just setting her down in her car seat for a second, at least not without buckling up that five-point harness!

Happy Valentine's Day!

A guest post by Doc. [Quick note from Lucy: I apologize for the poor quality pictures in this post.  I keep telling Doc it's time to upgrade his phone.  Maybe seeing these on the computer will finally convince him.  :) ]

I am a pretty lucky guy.  Here you get updated on all of the things going on with our family, our home, our projects, etc.  But, what you don’t see is that on a regular basis I get to do whatever I want.  This Valentine’s Day was one of those days.

My life is generally pretty busy – work (and travel), caring for a family, work around the house, etc.  One of my favorite things to do, and to help me unwind, is to cook.  I don’t mind cooking quick & easy stuff – I do that on a regular basis.  But what I find really rewarding is to prepare a very nice meal.  So, on Valentine’s Day (even though she didn’t know it), Lucy let me take to the kitchen and (try to) work some magic.  Ultimately, this is what we ended up with, but the journey is the fun part – so let me rewind and take you back to the beginning.

I think it is very important to have a clean kitchen before you start and having some pretty things around is a plus.  I gave these to Lucy for Valentine’s Day, and she gave me this advance Father’s Day present in September.

So, here are the things that we started with.  Delta Grind Grits + Half & Half + Chicken Stock + Cheddar Cheese = Awesome Cheese Grits.   4 Colossal Sea Scallops + 1 Prime Filet + 2 Slices of Bacon + Cast Iron Skillet = Awesomeness!

Here is how I made the magic work – and If I say so myself, it was actually a very easy meal to make.  First the cheese grits.  The recipe calls for 2 cups Chicken Stock, 1 cup of milk, 1 cup of water (BOIL THIS TOGETHER) then add 1 cup of Grits and a touch of pepper.  I modified the recipe slightly, and used 2 cups HALF & HALF in lieu of the milk/water, and I added a touch of garlic salt  with the grits as well.  Simmer over low heat for 25 minutes while whisking every couple of minutes.  When fully cooked, add 12oz of cheddar cheese and stir until smooth and the cheese is melted.

As for the proteins – this was actually easier than the grits.  First, I cut the filet in half to get the portions in line for our meal.  I seasoned with a touch of sea salt.  Then, I washed and patted dry the scallops.  Also, it is important to remove the small “foot” on the side (it is very tough after cooked).  I also seasoned with a touch of sea salt.  I cut the pieces of bacon into small strips.

I browned the bacon a touch, then pushed it to the side of the cast iron skillet (don’t want to burn the bacon) and added the filets.  After 4+ minutes I turned the filets and added the scallops.  2.5 minutes on one-side, then I flipped the scallops.

Then, it is just a matter of plating the food.  I put a bed of cheese grits on the plate, set the filet on one side and the scallops on the other.  Then I decorated the grits with some of the bacon.  I served it with a nice drink.  And then we were in heaven.

This little girl is ready to try Dad’s cooking.  See how excited she gets about Rice Cereal.  Can you imagine the smile on her face when she gets to eat Prime Beef Tenderloin and Seared Sea Scallops with Cheese Grits and a Bacon garnish?

[Another note from Lucy: It was aaaaahhhhh-maaaaaa-zing!!!  I'm a lucky, lucky girl.]
