Registering Made Easy

I'm not kidding when I say that for me, one of the hardest parts of expecting a baby was figuring out what to register for.  It was a whole new territory for me and there were SO many things to choose from.  It was overwhelming, to say the least.  Also, I'm not a researcher.  At all.  I just wanted someone to tell me exactly what I needed.  (In fact, I assigned this "task" to one of my accountants and she made a List of Things to Register For for me.  Thanks again, Allyson!)  Several of you even gave great recommendations after I practically begged for help! So, in case any of you readers out there are like me and totally clueless about what to register for, I'm here to help!  But first, here's what you need to know about me: I consider myself a very laid back mom.  I don't need the very top of the line products.  I don't need food that will make my baby poop out gold or things that will have her passing a calculus class by the time she's 4.  The baby items I buy need to 1) be easy (easy to buy and easy to use) and 2) work for my baby (keep her safe, keep her healthy, keep her happy).

Disclaimer: Yes, I know that every baby is different.  So is every mom.  These are all my own opinions for what works with our laid back lifestyle and my relatively easy baby.  At the time of writing this, she's only 4 months old so these are all items needed during the infant stage.  I'll have to do another one later on for older baby stuff.  Every product on this list is something we own, unless stated otherwise, and almost every product can be found at Target or Babies R Us.  All pictures are from Google Images.

Baby's Gotta Eat

1. Medela Pump In Style On-The-Go Tote - I did not nurse or pump for very long, but when I was pumping, this was the pump I used.  It was awesome.  Super easy to use, not hard to learn at all.  And the on-the-go tote made getting out of the house easy.  It plugs into the wall, or you can get a car adapter or use batteries.  It also has a pocket where you can store bottles, bags, and other accessories so that it's all there together when you're out and about.  Kinda pricey, but worth it if you plan on pumping.

2. Simple Wishes Hands Free Breast Pump Bustier - This goes along with #1.  If you're gonna pump, you're gonna want one of these.  Obviously, it frees up your hands while pumping.  You will look and feel ridiculous, but it's awesome to be able to be productive while pumping!

3. Burp Cloths - This is a no brainer.  The ones pictured are 3 Marthas.  I got several of this brand as gifts and they're really cute and durable.  Not sure where they can be purchased though, probably at boutiques and gift shops.  Of course, any brand will do, just be sure to have lots of these on hand!

4. Tommee Tippee Closer to Nature Feeding Bib - I had no idea I'd need bibs so early; I thought they were for older babies that have started eating food.  Nope - even infants need a bib.  They dribble milk from their bottle everywhere!  There is nothing cute at all about the Closer to Nature Feeding Bib (found at Target) but it's pretty awesome because it fits a small neck and it has an "absorbent dribble catcher."  Obviously any bib will do, but I was pretty pleased with the two of these that we have.

5. Medela Feeding Set - I bought one of these feeding sets when I was pumping.  It came with storage tubes and bags for breastmilk, as well as three 5 ounce bottles.  Katie had no problems with the bottles and I loved how small they were when packing the diaper bag, so we stuck with these for the first 3.5 months.

6. Enfamil Gentlease Single Use Packs - These were so handy when we were on the go!  It's very much like using a Crystal Lite packet or something like that...pack the bottles with water already in them, then just open a 4 ounce pack, pour it in, and shake it up!  And they take up hardly any room in the diaper bag.  Unfortunately for us right now, they're harder to use since Katie's taking 5 ounce bottles.  I think once she's at 6 ounces we could use them again and do one and half packs per bottle.  In the mean time, we use this Philips Formula Dispenser.

7.  Avent Bottles - Now that Katie is eating a little bit more, we have moved up to these 9 ounce Avent bottles.  They are good, plain and simple bottles.  And they come in pink!  We've moved up to a faster flow nipple too and she's had zero problems with these bottles.

Kitchen Paraphernalia

1. Munchkin Steam Guard Microwave Sterilizer - I love this sterilizer!  Seriously, it makes sterilizing bottles, pacis, and everything else SO easy.  You just wash your bottles, load them into the sterilizer, add a little water, and pop it in the microwave.  They come out nice and steamy and clean!

2. Boon Grass Countertop Dryer - I've come to terms with the fact that my counters will always have bottles drying on them.  But at least with this Grass Dryer, they can do it in style!  The one I have pictured above is actually the Lawn.  Had I known about it, I would've bought it instead since it's bigger.  We just have the square grass.  This is nice because it holds anything, regardless of the size; you just stick it down in the blades of grass.

3. Munchkin Precision Bottle Warmer - I'm not sure that warming a bottle could be any easier when you have one of these.  For a while, we were holding the bottle under a stream of hot water, and that took forever!  With this, you just pop the bottle in it and press start.  2 minutes later your bottle is ready to go!

4. Bottle Brush - Necessary for washing bottles.  We use the Munchkin Bottle & Nipple Brush but I'm sure there are lots of good ones.

5. Boon STEM Countertop Drying Rack Accessory - Since we have the Grass and not the larger Lawn, we bought one of these flower accessories.  It stands up in the grass and is great for piling on the bottle tops and nipples to make more room.

Clean Up, Clean Up

1. Wash Rags - No link necessary here.  Just get some soft wash rags, kay?  Baby needs to be scrubbed!  (I mean, not really.  Baby needs to be gently wiped and patted down.)

2. Hooded Towels - For now, we use the thin, soft towels from Target because they seem better for her delicate skin.  We'll switch to the thicker terry cloth ones when she gets a little older.

3. Blooming Bath - I've said it before and I'll say it again, I LOVE our Blooming Bath!  Not only is it uber cute, but it's also really soft and comfy for Katie's sink baths.  There are some downsides compared to more traditional style baby bathtubs...it's not free-standing and it takes much longer to dry.  But there are pros too - it's not cold, hard plastic for her to lay on and it's really easy to travel with since you can squish it into a suitcase.

Mama Needs To Sleep

1. Nap Nanny - These have been recalled and are now out of business, and what a shame!  We would not have survived the first few months with a newborn without our Nap Nanny.  If I were you, I would search high and low and find one of these!  Used properly, I think they are 100% safe for a baby.  And they are incredibly lightweight and easy to move from room to room.

2. Miracle Blanket - I know there are tons of different swaddle blankets out there, but this one came heavily recommended by several friends so it's the one we went with.  It really is a miracle worker!  I credit this blanket with our baby sleeping through the night as well as she does.  In fact, we only had one and I started having nightmares about it getting pooped on and being in the laundry when nighttime came, so I frantically ordered another one so we'd never be without.  The one time that actually happened was the day Miracle Blanket #2 arrived in the mail.  Close call!

3. Graco Imonitor - We opted against a video monitor, and have been pleased with this Graco one so far.  It has two parent units and all three parts are rechargeable so they don't have to be plugged in all the time.

Nursery Necessities

1. Playtex Diaper Genie - I hesitated adding this to the list because while I do think you need something throw dirty diapers in, I'm not 100% sure that this is the best candidate for the job.  It's what we have and while I will say it's really easy to use and not horribly ugly sitting in the nursery, it doesn't really do a great job of masking the dirty diaper smell.  Maybe something like this Munchkin Diaper Pail  with Arm and Hammer bags would be better?

2. The First Years Sounds For Silence Premium Sound Machine - This is the one we have and it's fine.  I'm sure there are tons that are just as good.  I think a good white noise works wonders for keeping a baby asleep.

3. Changing Pad Cover - If you  have a changing table in your nursery, you'll obviously want to put a changing pad on it.  I bought this 3-pack of changing pad covers and am really glad I did.  I have not had to strip off my pink pad cover at all, but I have thrown that smaller white pad in the wash several times.  The 3-pack is good so I can put another one on it while the dirty one is getting cleaned.

Play Time!

1. Fisher Price Jumperoo - We received this as a gift before Katie was born but just got it out of the box about 2 weeks ago.  So far, Katie seems to love it!  And we definitely love having a place to sit her down to play while we get things done around the house.  She is still a little small for it so I think we'll have a good amount of time to use this toy.

2. Comfort & Harmony Cradling Bouncer - This bouncy seat came in very handy during the first few months, and we still use it some now.  It plays music and vibrates so Katie is usually content to sit in it if I need to get something done.  She usually falls asleep too and will take a short nap in it.

3. Books - Every baby needs some good books!  One of Katie's current favorites is Fuzzy Bee and Friends, I'm sure because it's crinkly and noisy.

4. Bumbo - This is another recalled item that I think, when used properly, is fine for a baby.  We let Katie sit in this while we eat meals or cook in the kitchen.  She likes to feel like she's in the middle of everything.  We also have the tray but haven't used it yet; I'll have to give my review of it later.

5. Infantino Twist and Fold Activity Gym - This play mat is great for tummy time.  And playtime on her back too.  Katie loves looking in the mirror and playing with all the hanging animals.  I love that it's collapsible and easy to take with us to other places.  I also love that the mat can be thrown in the washing machine when it's covered in spit up.

On The Go!

1. Baby Trend Expedition ELX Travel System - I love our travel system!  We registered for the whole set - car seat, base, and stroller.  The car seat is pretty light weight, as far as car seats go.  It has the triangle handle so it's pretty easy to carry, even for a weakling like me.  I'm not sure there's much to say about the base except that we've bought 4 of them.  I have one, Doc has one, my mom has one, and now the babysitter has one so Katie can ride in lots of different cars! I love the stroller.  I really wanted one with all-terrain wheels instead of those small plastic ones.  It navigates really well and has cup holders and speakers for any MP3 player.  Right now her carseat snaps into it but when she's bigger, she can ride in it without her car seat.  The only thing that I don't love, love about it is that even after it's collapsed, it's still kinda bulky to get in the car.  It won't fit in Doc's trunk at all.  I have no idea how it compares to others though, so that may be pretty standard for strollers.  Very pleased with this travel system.

2. Arm and Hammer Bags - These are great to throw in the diaper bag for diaper changes on the go.  And they're scented too!  You can get a holder for them, but I broke the one I had so now I just have the roll of bags.  Works just as well.

3. Brica Baby In Sight Mirror - This is a must-have for in the car.  It helps put your mind at ease when you can just look in the rear view mirror and see her in her mirror.  Plus, it makes finding her mouth for the pacifier while at a red light much easier.

4. The Mommy Hook - This isn't a necessity, but is nice to have.  It's a hook for the arm of your stroller so that you can hang your purse or shopping bags while out with the baby.  Comes in handy.

5. Diaper Bag - The number one thing you can't leave the house without when you have a baby is a diaper bag.  I have this Petunia Pickle Bottom Touring Tote, but it's probably not the best one out there, especially for new moms.  I say that because it doesn't hold a whole, whole lot and I'm sure most new moms tend to overpack (like how I'm not including myself here?! I tend to underpack - oops!). Find one that works great for you.  Or actually, find more than one so that you can have one dedicated just daycare.

Keep 'Em Healthy

1. Baby Tylenol - We've been blessed to have a healthy baby, so we haven't need much medicine.  This is good to have in our medicine cabinet just in case, though.  We've only had to use it for the first set of shots, so far.  Hopefully it won't have to come out often!

2. Thermometer - Important to have, as your supposed to take a new baby's temperature often.  I can't say that I do it all that much, but I have a few times.  We have several different thermometers that all seem to work fine.  I'm pretty sure they're all from Target - not the cheapest ones but nothing fancy either.

3. Butt Paste - Katie has only had two, maybe three, bouts of diaper rash and every time, a swipe of butt paste clears it right up.  It's gone within a day.

4. 0.5% Hydrocortisone Cream - I took Katie to the doctor when I was sure she was having an allergic reaction to something and had a rash all over her face.  Turns out it was just cradle cap.  The doctor recommended hydrocortisone cream.  I was amazed at how fast it disappeared!  Anytime I see bumps ("baby acne") pop up, I put a teeny dab of this on and it's gone.  I prefer the cream over the ointment because it's less greasy.

5. Nose Bulb Syringe - Take the one they give you at the hospital, it's the best.

6. Gas Drops - I think we actually bought the generic kind but I'm sure they're all the same.  If the baby's fussing and you know they're not hungry, hurt, or need a diaper change, try the gas drops.  If they have a bloated tummy, it'll help.  And even if they don't it won't hurt them.  I think, if anything, it distracts them from crying and they start licking their lips from the flavor and will usually take a paci (at least that's the case with Katie).  We don't use this too often, but it's good to know it's there.

Overrated? (Things we didn't end up using.)

1. Munchkin Standard Wipe Warmer - We used this for the first pack of wipes we went through, and while the thought of a warm wipe is nice, I found that it ended up drying them out.  Not all of them, just the top one or two.  So you'd have to pull out more to get a wet one and that's just wasteful.  Plus, I like to pull out a couple wipes and have them ready before I even open the diaper, so by the time I got around to using them they weren't really even warm anymore.  We don't use this anymore.

2. Dr. Brown's Formula Mixing Pitcher - This is for making a bigger batch of formula at one time.  I can see where some people would really like this, especially if they're at home all day, but since we were on the go so much this didn't get much use.  I didn't see the point in making a full pitcher of formula (that doesn't last very long) if I was going to be grabbing my travel packs to use on the go most of the day.

3. Dr. Brown's Bottles - Everyone told me these were THE bottles to have, so we got some.  We also got the Dr. Brown's drying rack, and dishwasher rack, bottle brush, and every other accessory.  But Katie had no problems with the Medela bottles we started with and transitioned easily to the Avent ones too.  To me, Dr. Brown's just seemed like a more expensive bottle with a lot more pieces for me to wash (that does not meet my "easy" requirement). Of course, we haven't been fighting colic or lots of spit up, so maybe we'd try these if we did.  All I saw when I looked at my unopened Dr. Brown's stash was a bunch of money, so I took them back to Target and cashed in.

4. Boppy and Boppy Cover - I'll say it again, I did not nurse for very long.  But even when I did, I did not really use my boppy.  I think I used it two times total.  For some reason, it didn't fit right and feel comfortable to me.  It was easier for me to just use my lap or a pillow to prop the baby.  I know some people can't nurse without them, though.

5. Munchkin Arm and Hammer Disposable Changing Pads - I bought a box of these thinking I'd need these for any diaper change that happened when we weren't at home.  There were 10 in the box and I think we've used 1.  My diaper bag came with a changing pad in it so we use that.  Plus, I sure as heck didn't want to have to carry that box around with me.  I already have too much stuff to hold!

6. Fisher Price Cradle N Swing - This is the baby swing we registered for but didn't receive it.  We debated whether or not we should just buy it ourselves since SO many people said their babies started off sleeping best in a swing.  But, with so many other places to lay the baby (crib, bassinet, Nap Nanny, bouncer, play mat) I couldn't see us needing one more thing.  I'm glad we didn't get it because we haven't missed it at all.  Of course, if you didn't have the bouncer or Nap Nanny you'd probably definitely need this.  I'm just not sure you need ALL of them.

7. Moby Wrap - I heard from so many people that love this and use it all the time, but I just didn't.  Still don't.  It's come out of the package one time.  Maybe I didn't do it right?  Maybe I just don't go enough places where I need to wear my baby in a wrap?  To me, it seemed silly to wear it in the house when I could lay her down somewhere.  I know some people have babies that have to be held all the time though, so maybe I just got lucky.

I really, really hope this is helpful to at least one person, especially since it took me forever to put together!  I literally walked through every room in our house looking at all the baby items, so hopefully I didn't miss anything.  Well, besides the obvious items like clothes, diapers, and soap/shampoo.  Surely you know you need those, right?  Now, we're about to embark on a whole new world of baby items...spoons and bowls, high chairs, teething toys, rattles and toys, baby bjorn, and who knows what else.  Maybe I'll do a Part 2 someday.

Four Months

As of today, my little peanut is four months old!  Sometimes I can't believe that it's already been four months, and sometimes I think the time between 2 months and 4 months took a really long time.  It seems like it's been forever since we last went to the doctor!  I'll take her back next week for her next set of shots.  I'm eager to see how much she weighs because she is becoming quite the chunky monkey! We had a quick little photo shoot this morning so I could get this monthly photo.  I haven't edited yet or chosen my favorite.  And unlike past months, there were no tears today!

While I was busy writing the info on the chalkboard sign, Lolli of course jumped up in the chair with Katie.  This happens daily.  In fact, I can't tell you how many times Lolli has actually sat on top of Katie...sometimes even on her head.  Good thing she doesn't weigh anything!

Most of the time they're really good friends and like each other.

But you never know when someone's foot is about to get chomped on...

Luckily, Katie doesn't ever seem to mind being gnawed on.

To be fair, she usually gets Lolli back with some good ol' hair pulling.

Then sometimes this happens...

Katie looks a little annoyed, but she's usually a good sport about doggie kisses.  I just keep telling myself her immune system is going to be AWESOME.

(Please don't call child protective services on me.  I promise no baby was harmed in the taking of these photos and I was very close and watching Lolli like a hawk.  She would never hurt her sister.)

Anyway, here's a few bullet points about what Katie Wynn is like at 4 months old for my memory.

  • Don't know how much she weighs, but girl's got some roly poly legs!  I can't get enough of the little fat rolls.  To go along with those chunky legs, she also has a big round belly.  I love kissing her baby gut!
  • We just switched to size 2 diapers about a week ago.  Still using Pampers.
  • Katie has discovered her toes/feet and loves grabbing hold of them.  It makes changing her diaper a little more difficult when she won't let them go!
  • Also about a week ago we switched from size 0-3 month clothing to 3-6 months.  She literally outgrew her clothes overnight (I'd read about this happening).  One day, her jammies fit fine.  The next, they wouldn't even go up over her shoulders.
  • My girl loves to talk!  She babbles and coos all day long.  And if you aren't paying attention to her and responding to her babbles, she'll just get louder.  Girl likes to be in the spotlight.
  • She is currently drooling NONSTOP.  I don't think she's teething yet because it's still a little early and I don't feel any nubs in her mouth, but she's definitely got drool running down her chin pretty much all day everyday.  Her shirts are always soaked.  Now I see why babies stay in bibs all the time.
  • She still holds her head up like a champ and loves to sit up.  She can't totally sit up on her own but can do pretty well with just a little bit of help.  She hasn't rolled over on her own yet (at least, not on purpose) but I think she's really, really close.
  • We're still on a 3-hour feeding schedule and she's currently taking 5 ounce bottles (Enfamil Gentlease).  We'll see what the doctor says next week about starting rice cereal soon.
  • Katie is still sleeping through the night.  Right now we still keep her up until we go to bed (sometime between 9 and 10) and on days that I work, she gets woken up at 6:30 to eat and get ready for the babysitter's.  She will sleep in later on the weekends.  I think as soon as we start cereal we will transition to an earlier bedtime.
  • I'm pretty sure Katie recognizes me and Doc now, and maybe even my mom.  She gives us lots of grins and kicks her legs in excitement when she sees us.
  • She alternates between her paci, thumb, and fingers.  When she's not "talking" she's sticking something in her mouth.
  • Her eyes are much darker than they were when she was born, but are still considered a blue color.  I'm still thinking they're going to change.
  • Katie is getting better at holding things.  I can put a soft rattle in her hand and she is able to play with it.  She usually drops it after a minute or so though.
  • We have started reading to her and she loves it!  Especially the crinkly books that make lots of noise.

I guess that's it!  I'll try to update this with her weight and length after we go to the doctor next week.

Living Room Progress

The living room has come a loooong way since we moved in, and I'm about to walk you through everything we've done.  Warning: this is gonna be another loooong post. Just for fun, here's a picture of the living room from when we toured the house.  This is all of the previous owners' stuff (except for my mom and Doc, they belong to me).

I liked their setup fine, even if most of their stuff was a little more contemporary than my style.  It actually looked like they never used this room.  I'm pretty sure the kids were never allowed to sit on these couches.  Heck, I don't even think the adults were allowed to sit on them!

Anyway.  So we moved in and just plopped down all of our living room furniture that we already had.

All of a sudden, our 8x11 rug looked tiny and our furniture just didn't fit right.  But, when we moved in I was fat and pregnant and fixing this room was the last thing on my list.  I had no idea what I wanted to do with it and just didn't have the energy to even think about it.

Check it out from this angle.  It looks like a lodge with those wood built-ins!

It was a tidge better in the daylight.  Maybe?

Here are views from different spots in the room.  Those bare windows!

Like I said, I hadn't planned on this room being one of my first projects.  But once the baby was born and we started having visitors and hanging out in this room more, it started really bugging me.  Like, really, really bugging me.  So I switched gears and started thinking about what needed to happen in here.

As you already know, the first step was getting the hardwood floors refinished.  This was also something that we figured we'd do much later down the line, but after thinking about it, it seemed to make more sense to do it early when there was minimal furniture to move out of the room and we hadn't painted yet.  So, during our first trip to the beach, the floors got sanded down, stained a medium-dark brown color, and then re-sealed.

Of course, the pretty new floors only made the wooden built-ins look awful.  So I spent a week or so finishing them up and then painting them.

I think other than our Christmas decorations that went up, that's the last I'd showed you of our living room.  So let's pick up from there.

Shortly after I wrapped up my work on the built-ins, we hit the road for Beach Trip Take Two.  We once again decided to take advantage of the room still being empty of furniture and us being out of the house, and lined up some painters to come in and take care of those yellow-khaki walls.

The walls weren't the only things being painted - they were also going to paint all of the trim work and the treads of the stairs.  Also, see this little decorative wooden piece on the side of the stairs?  It got re-stained along with the hardwood floors, but I was pretty sure it would look better painted the same white color as the trim, so I had them do it too.  (The photo below is probably the best depiction of the original wall colors; it wasn't quite as yellow as it looks in the two pictures above.)

Well, here is where I would show you an after picture of the room after the walls, trim, and stair treads had been painted, but apparently I didn't think it was important enough to take a picture of.  You'll be able to see it in the background of the rest of the pics, though.  In case anyone is curious, the wall color is Behr's Castle Path (color-matched by Sherwin Williams) and the trim is Sherwin William's Pure White.

Let's talk about where I was going with this room.  While I loved our old living room furniture in our old house, I wanted pretty much the opposite of it for this house.  I wanted all the big pieces in the room (read: the pricier items) to be neutral colors (as opposed to our red and colorful furniture from before) so that they could work with multiple accent colors, should I choose to swap things out from time to time.  I also wanted everything to be more casual and comfy.  Unlike the way it looked when the previous owners had our house, I wanted this to be a room that we could all really live in.

By the time the painters were done, I had picked out new furniture and a new rug, and they had all been ordered.  I was so eager for them to come in so I could see them in the room!  The two chairs and ottomans actually arrived the day we were outside taking family pictures, but since the room still hadn't been painted at that time, they hung out in the office for a couple weeks.

It was only a couple of days after the paint job finished that our rug arrived.  Have you ever ordered a rug online?  This was a first for me, and I was a nervous wreck about it.  I had done my research, though, and knew that I had 45 days to return it and get my money back if I didn't like it.  I purposely timed the rug order to be close to when the furniture would arrive so that I could see them together and still be in my 45 day window.  The rug I chose was the Vintage Area Rug II from Home Decorators in its biggest size.  Thank goodness I caught it on sale!  It was everything I was looking for - big, not too expensive, soft but not too plush, and had both greys and khakis and wasn't too light in color to show a lot of dirt.

I loved it the minute we rolled it out on the hardwood floors.

We debated between buying two large couches to place across from each other, or buying one couch and two chairs and ottomans.  We ended up deciding on the chairs + couch combo because we thought it would work the best for our family.  Plus, the chairs were really comfy in the store.  They are slipcovered chairs in "Smoke" purchased from Stash Furniture.

Since the chairs and ottomans were in, we carried them into the room.  We also brought in the coffee table and entertainment center we already had.

That's my little helper you see sitting in the chair on the right.  She agrees that the chairs are really soft and comfy.

I had to wait another week before the couch arrived - longest week ever!  Katie and I were chilling in the chair together when the delivery guys carried it in.  I snapped this pic with my phone and sent it to Doc so he'd know it arrived ok.  (You can see that decorative piece on the stairs painted white now.)

Our twelve-foot Christmas tree arrived the very next day, so we shuffled all the furniture around to make room for it.  That's one of the reasons I've put off showing you the living room for so long.  I wanted to take pictures after all the Christmas decorations were put away.  (They've been gone for 3 weeks now, I have no other excuses for the delay.)

So let's fast-forward to today when I finally took some pictures of the room so you can see it in it's current state.  We're calling it "done" for now, but only because we need to give our bank account a little break.  There's still a lot I want to do!

I picked out some Premier Prints fabric that I thought went well with the furniture and rug.   My mom made the curtains out of the Carnival print in Village Blue / Natural.

For the two chairs, she made throw pillows out of a coordinating print - Seesaw in the same colors.

I scored the fabric for the couch's throw pillows off the remnants table.  They're in the same colors - one is Towers and one is Rio.

I also found more of the curtain fabric on the remnants table too, so I bought enough of it to cover these two storage cubes.  They're currently sitting in front of the fire place, but they tend to move around the room.  I haven't decided where their permanent home will be yet.

We've also added a few new lamps to the room.  I love the mercury glass trend that's popular right now, so my mom bought me this lamp to go between the two chairs.  She found it at Hancock Fabrics, of all places.

I had this floor lamp on my Christmas wish list and my in-laws were sweet enough to get it for me.  It came from Target.

Pat, my mother-in-law, had requested it be wrapped when she ordered it since it was being shipped to our house.  Well, Target forgot to wrap it.  They did, however, accidentally package two lamps in the box instead of one.  Score!  Who needs gift wrap when you can get a whole extra lamp?!  (Just so you know, we did discuss doing the right thing and sending it back to Target, but decided it would be a lot more work on our end and they probably didn't even notice their mistake anyway, so.... yeah.  I like free lamps is what I'm sayin'.)

Right now, this one is just hanging out next to the entertainment center.  Not sure if it'll stay in this room or end up somewhere else.

We have not had a Home Goods in our area for very long, and I've just recently started going there.  Um, it's quickly becoming one of my favorite stores.  Especially for lamps!!  I practically squealed when I saw this mercury glass one...I was looking for one to coordinate with the one between the two chairs without being identical.  Love the burlap shade on it!  (As you can see, I'm also big on drum shades right now, except I feel like every time I walk into the living room, at least one of them is slightly tilted to the side and it drives me bonkers.)

Also at Home Goods I found these two vases that match the lamp.  I couldn't resist getting them for the built-ins.

And this hour glass!  Don't worry, I am not allowing myself to buy anything else that's mercury glass.  Can't go overboard.

So, the built-ins.  They're somewhat decorated, but everything is subject to change.  In fact, a lot of things are just placeholders until I find something I like better.  I didn't want to rush out and buy things just to fill it up, though, so the majority is stuff we already had.  I plan on taking my time finding meaningful things to go on these shelves.

That's pretty much all the progress we've made so far.  It's not complete, but we've definitely come a long way, no?

I mentioned still having lots of things to do.  Let's talk about those things; I'd love to hear your thoughts.  First up, the mantel.  I'm really stuck here.  I can't decide what I want.  The space above the mantel is really wide but not too quite three feet tall.  The paintings I've seen so far that I thought could work have all been three feet tall.  We're working with about 34 inches.

I just bought this vase and sticks off the clearance rack at Target yesterday.  Now that I have it home, I realize I should have bought another package of sticks.  These don't fill up the vase.  I could probably go with some that are darker too.

The actual mantel itself is really high - about six feet up - and the ledge is pretty narrow.  It's really hard to find something to sit on it that's skinny enough to fit on the ledge but also big enough to not look piddly up there.  In fact, I bought the vase above because it was nice and tall but also looked skinny enough to fit.  It's just a smidge wider than the ledge, but it's close enough to work.

I really want something unique to go there...but what?  Maybe something architectural?  I think an antique door turned sideways or maybe some shutters could be cool if done right, but something like that could take forever to find.  Anyone got any good ideas?

The other big problem area is this vast expanse of wall.  It's a lot of space to fill up and our entertainment center just looks tiny on it!

I wouldn't mind eventually getting rid of the entertainment center since it's so small on the wall and limits the size TV we can get anyway.  But I think a lot of big entertainment centers would look silly because they would be up against the world's largest built-in bookshelves on the opposite wall.  Maybe something like this from Crate and Barrel could work?  (After we save our pennies for a long, long time!)

I dunno.  And what do I do in the meantime?  Hanging pictures on the wall would be a huge help.  I guess I should love for some, but they'd need to be big.  Or I could do a gallery wall.  I'm gonna have to think on it.

This table could also use some accessories.

I'd love to get a new coffee table one day too, but the one we have is fine for now.  I think something not quite as deep would create a little more space in the middle of the floor.  I have a feeling a certain little girl is going to want to have some room to play sometime soon!

Now that we've done so much, it's hard to look back and think that I was ok with leaving the living room like this for a while.  So glad I changed my mind!

Did I mentioned we sold all of our old stuff?  Yep, it was nice to recoup some cash for all the new purchases, and it all went to a friend too so I can visit it if I ever miss it. :)

Let's end on a better picture.  Recap: refinished floors, painted built-ins, painted walls, new chairs and sofa, new rug, new lamps, hung curtains and added throw pillows, and we now have a living room that looks like this.

Would love your feedback and suggestions for my problem areas!

Easin' Back In

Well, after my last post about returning to work this week, it seems that Mother Nature doesn't think I should be working! Yesterday was good.  It was a quiet day in the office with a couple people out, but my work bestie showed up with donuts.  Oh yeah!  (I have to practice serious restraint when it comes to donuts...I could easily knock out a dozen on my own.)  The morning flew by and before I knew it, it was 1:00 and we hadn't even had lunch yet!  We decided to go out in celebration of my return and, while walking to our car, realized the sprinkles we saw out the window were actually tiny pieces of ice.  Sleet!

The sleet really picked up because by the time we were finished eating and ready to head back to work, my car had a thin layer of ice covering it.  Uh-oh.  'Round these parts, ice on the road is noooo good.  Around 2:15 I made it back to my desk and a lovely surprise...flowers from Doc!  Y'all, I told you he's the best.

I had barely gotten a chance to thank him for sending them when our CEO sent out an email announcing our office would be closing at 2:30.  Woohoo!!  First day back and I was going to get to leave early and get home to my baby!

Or so I thought...

Turns out the ice on the roads was pretty bad and my usual 15 minute commute took me over two and a half hours!  I ended up getting home later than I do on a normal full work day.  Ugh.  The ice on the roads and bridges was solid in some places and I'll admit, there was one hill in particular that scared me to death.  I prayed the whole time I was on it and I straddled the middle line - I didn't care if anyone honked at me, I needed my space!  Actually, every one behind me took my lead and we formed a single file line down that icy hill and finally, I made it to my mom's house where my baby girl was (I had Mom pick her up when I realized I was going to be a while). Doc and my dad both stayed at their offices in hopes that all the crazies would get off the road and some salt would get thrown down.  They didn't end up getting home until after 10pm!

By this morning, the roads were pretty easy to drive on again.  The only icy part on my commute in to work was the off-ramp of the interstate, but I was expecting it and creeeeeped down it.  The weatherman had warned us that more sleet was on the way, and he was right.  Doc and I are both fortunate to work for people who care about our safety...his boss sent him out the door at 11:00 this morning so he wouldn't have a repeat of the night before.  My boss told me to hit the road around 10:00, but I didn't want to be False Alarm Girl so I waited until around noon when the sleet started to leave.  Our drives home too much less time today since we beat the ice sticking to the roads.  And that's how, at 3:00 on a Tuesday, I'm blogging from underneath a warm blanket in my comfy chair with Lolli curled up beside me and Doc and Katie over in the other chair.

So, I'd tell you how it feels to spend 8 hours at a desk after 16 weeks of maternity leave, but how the heck would I know?!  Maybe I'll get a full day's worth of work in on Thursday...

Maternity Leave

Sixteen weeks...that's how long I was able to stay home with my baby girl.  Sixteen weeks.  Almost four months.  31% of a full year.  That's so long!  So much time!  And yet, it seemed so short. Where did the time go?  I wish I could say that I spent sixteen weeks at home soaking up the soft skin and sweet smells of my new daughter, cuddling on the couch, playing, and watching daytime television.  The truth is, besides a couple shows on the DIY network (it's the only channel I've learned with our new cable service), I have no idea what comes on during daytime TV.  My girl and I?  We were on the go!

Over these sixteen weeks, we took four 9-hour road trips to and from Florida and slept 8 nights in our beach house.  Katie rocked her first two airplane rides, to and from Indiana to visit her grandparents and great-grandfather.  We had two professional photoshoots and countless amateur ones.  Aside from her first week home and one Sunday at the beach, we attended church every week.  On maternity leave, we had countless visitors and hosted friends and family for meals.  We took walks, worked in the shop, unpacked boxes, and continued working in our home.  We spent afternoons at Mimi's house, working on the embroidery machine and napping.  And we shopped!  Oh, how we shopped!  I started her early with her first shopping adventure happening at just a week old when we picked out new living room furniture.  We shopped in outdoor outlet malls, regular malls, stand-alone stores.  We shopped for clothes, furniture, fabric, hardware, tools, and everything in between!

I don't take lightly how lucky I am to have had so much time to spend with her.  And to have a perfectly healthy girl that I could do all these things with!  I thank God daily for that.  Sometimes I wonder if He gave me a relatively easy baby because He knew I had no intentions of slowing down.  I am so, so blessed.

And have I ever told you how wonderful my husband is?  He really is the best husband and a terrific daddy.  I love watching him love on his children.  He works harder than anyone I know - all day at work and then all night at home.  He does everything he can to advance in his career.  He comes home and prepares dinner and helps maintain the house.  He is hands-on with everything for the kids, from changing diapers and feeding bottles to attending basketball games and music recitals.  And because he is so wonderful, he gave me the ultimate gift when Katie was born: getting to decide for myself if I wanted to go back to work or stay at home full time with her.  He was willing to take on all our financial burdens himself so that I could spend my days with my baby.  What a blessing to have that option!

It was an incredibly hard decision.  There were times when I felt like I was choosing between two babies.  There is, of course, my literal baby whom I love so much it hurts sometimes.  How could I possibly say goodbye to her precious face everyday?  But then there was my career.  There are so many things about my job that make it like a baby to me too.  I have worked hard for over seven years to get to where I am, and there are so many parts of my everyday work that I take ownership of and am not quite ready to let go of.  Plus, I love the people I work with and the mission we work for.

I went back and forth so much in my head that I almost wished Doc would just make the decision for me.  It's not always great to have options!  How could I decide?  Would I lose my contacts and skills if I stopped working for a while?  Was I a bad mom if I didn't stay at home?  As much as I would love to play with my daughter all day long, would I really take the time and do the things I needed to every day to teach her?  How would she socialize?  But then again, did I want to only see her for a few hours each night after work?

After some negotiations, the perfect situation has been worked out: part time work.  I hope that I'm not jinxing myself by writing this here since I technically have not signed on the dotted line yet, but all signs are pointing to me being able to work just three days a week.  That gives me four days at home with my girl - the perfect solution.  I get to keep my career but spend time with my little girl too.  This makes one happy mama.

As for Katie, we found the perfect solution for her too.  A sweet woman who lives just around the corner from us will be keeping her on the days that I work.  This woman only keeps babies until they're one year old, so it's a temporary solution, but a really good one for now.  There is one other boy there now; he's about a month or so older than Katie.  We had a couple trial runs with the babysitter this past week and both days went really well.  Katie was happy and well cared for, and that makes me happy (even if I did spend most of the first day in tears).

But that doesn't mean I'm not nervous about tomorrow!  Tomorrow, life starts full speed ahead again.  No more sleeping in.  Our clothes have been ironed and laid out.  Her diaper bag and my laptop bag are both packed.  The alarm clock is set.  We will once again be girls on the go, only tomorrow we go in different directions.  Wish us luck, we may need it!
