Instagrammed

I'm becoming a little bit addicted to Instagram.  I love how quickly I can edit a photo and crop it down to a tiny, perfect square.  Of course, it means that I have a lot more pictures to share!  For those of you that follow me on social media, sorry for the repeats.  Although, some of these little instagram gems didn't even post to my feed...I'm sneaky like that. This cute little gown (softest fabric ever!) and hat were supposed to be what Katie Wynn wore home from the hospital after she was born.  At three months old, it finally fits!

When we went to my aunt's for Christmas, I got to ride next to these chubby cheeks in the car.

Two of my favorite cuties!

This outfit was a late baby gift that we opened on Christmas Eve.  How can you not love a girl in a tutu with mismatched tights?

We spent the morning of New Year's Day hanging out in just a diaper and a bib...that eventually turned into a cape.

Bren (or really her mom) passed down some gowns for us to wear to church.  This particular Sunday, I forgot to pack all the pieces to the bottle that was very much needed mid-service, so we had to make an early exit.  Parenting fail.

This girl flirted with all the workers at FedEx Office one day!

We always put her to sleep in the bassinet laying in this direction...

...only to find her in the morning rotated exactly 90 degrees.  Every. Single. Day.

Speaking of sleep, Mimi's bed is the best place for an afternoon nap.

And speaking of Mimi's, this little dude hung out with us one day and at the time this picture was taken, he was singing his heart out...to a Ke$ha song.

"Mom put this hat and mittens on me and now I'm convinced I can't move."

The quality of this picture is terrible, but look!  He's practically holding her!  (And did not want me to take his picture, thus the hands on the face.)

We are still and will always be Irish fans, even after the tragedy that was Monday night's football game.

Katie spent the game doing some hand-holding with her boyfriend, Everett.  It's cute now, Missy, but this will not be allowed in a few years.

Can you ever have enough bath pictures?

Baby lashes.

We finally got a break from the rain today and the sun made an appearance, so I took my two girls out for a walk.

That's all the Instagram goodness I have for now.  Which one's your favorite?  I think I'm torn between the one of KW and her Daddy and the one with the mittens.

Baptized

December 9, 2012 = the day we had Katie Wynn baptized.  Prior to December 9, our sweet little girl had never cried during church, pooped during church, or spit up on a gown.  December 9, 2012 = the day all of that changed. It was a big day for all of us.  Doc and I were playing handbells as half of a quartet during the service, and so we had to go up to the church early to practice.  Thank goodness Doc's parents were in town!  They stayed at our house with all three kids and made sure everyone got showered and ready for church.

Fast forward to the service and my dad started out holding Katie.  The plan was that she'd get baptized right after we greeted one another - not too far into the service.  We were right in the middle of the first praise song when I felt my dad tap me on the shoulder.  "She just filled up her diaper and it doesn't smell so good..."  Crap.  Literally.  I grabbed the diaper bag and the baby and practically ran to the women's restroom.  Thank goodness someone was in there to help me!  Her gown was huge and I was envisioning it getting royally messed up.  With the help of a friend, I was able to get the diaper changed in no time.  Of course, just as I was washing my hands, she spit up on her dress.  Crap again!  I grabbed her burp cloth and got that cleaned up and ran back into the sanctuary just in time to toss my dad the diaper bag and walk up front.

Here we are with our preacher as we make our vows to bring Katie up in the church.  (See the burp cloth in my hand?  Was worried we'd have Spit Up Round Two while we were up there.  That didn't happen, thankfully.  Instead, we had Diaper Fill Up Round Two, right there in Doc's arms in front of God and everybody.  Luckily he and I were the only ones who could hear it.

Her below-the-waist activities ended just in time for Doc to pass her over to the preacher to be baptized.  And that is when my sweet little angel started crying.  You can't really tell in the picture below but she didn't really want that water on her head!

I happened to have her pacifier in my hand so we were able to plug her up so Brother Tom could walk her down the aisle and show her off to the congregation.  I'm pretty sure that Doc and I had both sweated through our clothes at this point, and we still had to play handbells!  When we made it back to our pew, we passed Katie down to Doc's mom and she immediately fell asleep.  Doc and I had just enough time to put on our gloves and head back to the front of the sanctuary to play during the offertory.  We played O Come, O Come Emmanuel and I think it was our best run-through of it.  We had struggled in practice but we pulled it off!  Phew!

I wish I could tell you what the sermon was about that Sunday, but my mind was all over the place.  Did I look like an idiot standing up there?  Why did she cry?  I hope she doesn't get diaper rash since I haven't changed her diaper.  Did I play all of my notes? Will everyone be up for taking pictures after the service?  So on and so forth...

Doc and I had invited all of our family over for lunch to celebrate Katie's baptism, but I quickly got the word out that we had to take pictures before anyone could leave.  They were all good sports.

Katie-bug had quite a crowd!

Fist pumps for Jesus!

Here are Doc's parents with our kids.

My grandmother was able to get a smile from Katie.

One of these days I'll get a decent shot of all 7 of my parents' grandkids.  Either that or I'll stop trying.

Like I said, we invited everyone over for lunch after church.  For a brief second, Doc and I had considered cooking but we wisened up and let someone else do it for us.  We had a catered lunch of poppy seed chicken, green beans, layered salad, and homemade rolls.  For dessert we had strawberry cake and chocolate cake.  It was delicious!  (And so much easier and less stressful than cooking ourselves!)

Have you ever seen that quote that goes something like, "Grandparents' houses are where cousins go to become best friends?"  I think that's true for these two munchkins.  They are best cousin friends.

Here is my mom with two of her besties, Leslie and Jenny.  I love this pic of you gals!

Have you ever fallen asleep at your own party?  Poor girl was worn out.

The lunch was delicious and we all had a good time.  It was such a good day, even with all the little mishaps!  You better believe we all needed a nap that afternoon, though!

A day or two later, I dressed Katie back up so I could get some pictures of her in her gown.  My photo shoot didn't go so well so I actually had a photographer friend come take some more professional ones, but here are a few that I was able to get.

I have to brag on my mom because she made Katie's gown by hand.  Isn't she amazing?!  I mean, look at all the detail on the skirt!  She did all of the shadow-work embroidery and pin tucks by hand.  And the scallops and lace edging.  She's crazy talented!

The lace on the sleeves had a ribbon running through it.

I wish I had a picture of the back so you could see the big bow on it too.  It was a beautiful gown and I gave my mom a very short amount of time to get it done.  Thanks so much, Mom!  You rock!

(She pooped during the photoshoot too...must be something about that gown that just makes her feel good and relaxed...)

Last Christmas Celebration

I just realized I still had some Christmas pictures that I hadn't posted yet.  We didn't get together with my mom's side of the family until the weekend after Christmas, so it was a later celebration.  We alternate houses every year between my mom's house and my aunt's house, and this year was my aunt's year to host us for Christmas.  They live about 2 hours away, so early Saturday morning we all jumped in our cars and hit the road.  We love getting to go visit them! Growing up, I always thought of my mom's side of the family as the "small" side since she's just one of two children.  My dad's one of five so there are a lot more cousins on that side.  But these days, with all us grandchildren grown up, I'm pretty sure this side has produced more great-grandchildren.  In fact, the 14 adults will be evenly matched when the 14th great-grandchild arrives in March.  Five of those great-grandchildren are four years old and are either very best friends or tattling on each other right and left.  And three kids are younger than them.  I'm sure you can imagine how chaotic it gets when we're all under one roof!

My pictures from the day are very random and not very great.  With all the chaos, though, it's a miracle I got any pictures at all.  It was a super fun day and I'm so glad we were able to find a time to all get together, even if it was for just half a day.  I think I'll skip the commentary this time...enjoy the pics!

Morning Routine

I took these pictures back at the beginning of December - that's how far behind on blogging I am!  You'll have to forgive me for not editing them. Every morning, usually after Katie's 9-ish bottle, we have bathtime.  It's probably one of my favorite parts of the day.  And I know it's going to change soon...we'll have to start doing baths at nighttime when mornings get hectic and feedings get messy, but for now, morning baths are the best.  I love having her smell so fresh and so clean, clean all day.  And since it's all going to change soon, and since she's growing like a weed, one morning I decided to let my camera tag along and capture some of these sweet moments.

The whole bath process starts off at the changing table where she gets stripped of her pj's and usually a stinky diaper.  We talk about what we're going to do that day and what we should wear.  And oh the raspberries that get blown on that bare belly!

As you can tell, when I took these, Katie was hard-core trying to find her thumb.  (She has since found it and, oddly enough, isn't quite as interested in it anymore.)

Since she's still not mobile, I usually let her lie on the changing mat while I get out her clothes for the day and get the bath water going.

As soon as the sink is full of warm water, we play our first game of Risk - I pick up my nekkid baby and we walk asfastaswecan into the bathroom and land in the sink, hoping not to let loose any tee-tee along the way.

She almost always takes a big deep breath in when she first sinks into the water.

We use a Blooming Bath, which we love!  (It's yellow because I bought it before we knew her gender, otherwise you know it'd be pink!)  She still can't completely sit up on her own, so I put the big flower cushion on the counter and let two petals dip down into the sink.  She sits on these and leans back on the rest of the flower kinda like a recliner (I wish I had one of these for my own tub).

See how she's looking at me like I'm crazy in the photo above?  That's because I'm probably telling her we've got to wash the Eye-Winker, Tom-Tinker, Nose-Wiper, and the Mouth-Eater.  Yep, we start with the face and sing the song my grandmother used to sing to me.  It usually makes her laugh...or maybe stick out her tongue and try to eat the washcloth.

Once the face is clean, I always ask her if she's ready for the slippery, slimy, soapy bubbles.  She's always ready.  The bubbles are fun!

And then comes her very favorite part...flippin' over for a back massage!

I swear she would lay like that all day if she could.  She has enjoyed this part from her very first bath.  Although lately she's really trying to push up on her legs and I keep thinking she's just going to crawl up onto the counter.

Baby muscles.  Swoon.

And every morning, right around this time, her arm becomes the tastiest thing she's ever put in her mouth!  I don't blame her, even a soapy arm probably tastes better than formula.

Unfortunately for my girl, all good things have to come to an end.  I pull the plug on the soapy water and turn the faucet back on so we can rinse off.

This picture?  Cracks. me. up.

No more slippery, slimy, soapy bubbles on this baby!

I usually ask her if she's ready to get dried off, as if she has any say-so in the matter.  I'm sure if she could talk she would say no, because this is her least favorite part (probably because I clean her ears while she's in her towel).  I plop her up on the dry side of the Blooming Bath and wrap her up in her towel so that she's snug as a bug in a rug!  This picture is terrible - bad angle - but it's the only one I could get.  She's wiggly so all hands have to be on deck!

While getting dried off (or really, getting her ears cleaned) is her least favorite part, it's followed by my favorite part - getting lathered up in lotion!  I declare, Johnson and Johnson knew what they were doing when they made that pink baby lotion!  Seriously.  Smells so good it makes me want to kiss all over her!

Then we play our second game of Risk.  Nekkid baby once again flying through the air, over the carpet, and landing back on the changing table.  To date, she has not yet watered the carpet.  Thank goodness.  She has, however, tinkled all over the blooming bath and bathroom sink.  And the changing table, but that's a given.  I'm sure by typing this I've totally just jinxed us, and tomorrow morning I'll be on my hands and knees scrubbing the carpet.

Back on the changing table, we slap on a fresh, dry diaper (after guessing which Sesame Street character will be on the diaper we pull - a game I learned from her Daddy).  Then, we face the toughest challenge of parenthood: getting a long-sleeved onesie on a just-lotioned baby.  Come on fellow parents, am I right or am I right?

The pictures below were actually taken on a different day, but they fit in with our morning routine.  After getting dressed, we always make one last stop in the bathroom so I can brush what little hair she has.  Lately, this step has taken a bit longer because someone likes to admire herself in the mirror.

I try not to let that last too long...I don't want my girl to be vain. :)

After bathtime is complete, Katie goes into her big! giant! crib for a few minutes while I clean up the bathroom and take her clothes to the laundry.  (Check out that gut!)

Most days, unless I'm feeling lazy, I've already gotten myself cleaned up too, so at this point we can hit the town!  Or watch the DIY Network...whatevs.

Three Months

I can't believe my little girl is already three months old.  Actually, she's more like 3 and a half months old.  Time is flying! Because taking weekly pictures while I was pregnant turned into such a pain, I decided I would just do monthly pictures for her first year instead of more weekly ones.  Only problem was that I couldn't decide exactly how I wanted to do them.  In this Pinterest era that we live in, there are so many creative ways floating around the interwebs of how to document your child's life.  And it's not hard to get wrapped up in all of those fancy videos and professional photographs and feel pressured to have the best pictures of every moment.  But sometimes you just have to make yourself snap out of it and do what works best for you.  At least, that's what I had to do.

I spent the first month with different "picture theme" ideas rolling around in my head and when the 23rd approached, I still hadn't decided on one.  Same chair every month?  Same outfit every month to see how she fills it out?  Something completely different every month?  Agh, too many different ideas!  So, I took three different pictures and thought I'd just see which one I liked best and wanted to keep doing.  Three different pictures sounds like more work than just picking one, but I had one very big rule: I absolutely would NOT stress about getting the perfect picture.  Set her up, grab the camera, click the button a couple times, and call it done.  If I happened to get a cute smile, great.  If not, so be it.

As it turns out, I've done all three different pictures for three months now.  I still can't decide on just one.  And, as you can see below, I absolutely have not gotten lots of cute smiles.  But I'm ok with it.  Maybe it's just a better representation of our life right now...not every day is rainbows and butterflies.

The first picture theme is of her sitting in the chair in her room with a chalkboard sign.  I decided not to do the same outfit, but I'd at least try to make sure she always had on pink and white (hey, don't want to clash with the chair).  Katie Wynn is making me stick to my "don't stress about it" rule.  Tears during the picture?  Check!

Truth be told, I did get a non-crying picture this last month, I just think it's funny that my usually happy baby has managed to cry in this picture for three months in a row.  Maybe I should shoot for getting that face each month?

The second idea I toyed with was doing one of me and her together on the front steps of our house each month.  This way I could see how we grow together over the year (hopefully only one of us will physically be growing).  These have literally been 2 minute photoshoots.  And since someone different has taken the picture each month, they're all slightly different.

Oh, I hate that the picture above got cropped because one reason I chose it is that you can see Lolli in the window to the left.  I made her stay inside the house and she was feeling left out.  I also liked this one from this month.

The third and final monthly picture has been a themed one for each month.  This one's by far the hardest since I have to think of props or something to make it fit the theme.  It might be the first one to fall off since it will be harder to think of a theme for each month...what do you do for January??

The plan will be to have all these printed and displayed at her first birthday party, and also put them all in a photobook documenting her first year.  That is, if I actually follow through on taking them every month for 12 months.  I'm a fourth of the way there, just gotta keep it up!
