Thirty-Seven

He is obsessed with numbers.  He has a one-year forward cash flow for our personal finances that is always current.  On any given day, he can tell you when our low point for the year will be.  He calculates numbers in his head and will politely correct you if your calculations are wrong. He avoids mayonnaise like it's the plague.  Same for any other creamy white substance - cream cheese, ranch, sour cream.  At Subway, after the sandwich maker cuts my mayonnaise-filled sandwich in half, he announces that he'll wait while she cleans the knife before cutting his sandwich.

He yells, "Cops! Act cool!" every time he passes a patrolman while the kids are in the car.

He loves to cook, and is very good at it.  He enjoys trying to recreate delicious meals that we order at fancy restaurants, figuring out how he can make it even better.  It doesn't take long for him to take over the grill at any cookout.  I prefer staying home over going to a bar because he mixes drinks just the way I like them.

He makes up new dance moves in the car and choreographs dances in our bedroom.  At weddings, he dances silly with me and even sillier without me.  He uses chairs as props, or tries to break dance, or occasionally does handstands.

He folds laundry even when I tell him not to because it's my chore.  He empties the dishwasher and always takes the garbage out.  He appreciates our yard looking nice just as much as I do.

He's naturally good at sports.  He's improved his golf game by several strokes, took up volleyball like he's played for years, and has run two half marathons.

He's good at games too.  Whether it's scrabble, gin, thumb war, sudoku, or pinochle, he always wins.

He works out to keep his body healthy.  He calls his biceps Thunder and Lightening and convinces my nephew to eat his dinner so he can have muscles too.

He loves his kids and nieces and nephews and they all love him.  He plays touch football and throws them in the pool and holds them upside down and tickles them until they cry.  He considers it a good day when my niece lets him hold her.

He doesn't like needles and can't even talk about giving blood or watch the surgery scenes on Grey's Anatomy, yet he loves to watch Ultimate Fighting on tv.

He loves tootsie rolls and could eat a bag a day.  He can stomach the taste of any kind of alcohol and eats chewable vitamins and sports beans like they really taste like candy.

He is a proud Notre Dame alum and is always loyal to the Fighting Irish.

He is the best husband a girl could ask for.  He is a wonderful father to his children and a great son to his parents.  He is the perfect best friend, my favorite.

He turns thirty-seven today.

I love him.

Weekend in Review

The most important thing I have to say about the past weekend is this:  We survived. We had so many things to cram into the span of three days!  And on one hand, I'm sad that we were so busy that we didn't get to spend much quality time with Doc's parents who were in town, but on the other hand, I don't know that we would have survived had they not been here.  They were a HUGE help in so many different ways.  I honestly can't thank them enough...but I will try with extra presents under the Christmas tree!

As soon as they arrived Thursday evening, we piled into their car and headed out to see the kids in their school's Christmas production.

Both kids had speaking parts in the play and were very excited about it.  I'm so glad we were all able to go see them perform.  I tried hard to get some good pictures, but here's the thing - during the photography class I took back in the spring, no one ever told me what setting my camera should be on when I'm in a dark gym and too far away for my flash to reach my subjects.  So all I was able to get is some crappy pictures.

They started by all singing a Christmas carol together.  Anna's in the front row and to the right (in white).  See the white column over to the left?  Wyatt's standing right behind it.

After the first song, it was time for them to move to the stage to begin the play - "Follow the Star."  Anna took her spot in front of the microphone.

Wyatt was King Herod so he got to sit in the throne.

He had lots of speaking parts and did a great job!  My favorite part was when his character got frustrated and yelled "Enough already! Will someone just tell me the news?!"  He did some great acting.

Anna, as a Page, got into her role too.  She really put some arm motions into "Hear ye! Hear ye!"

After their speaking parts were over, they returned to the bleachers to sing with the rest of their classmates.  Luckily for me, they sat next to each other so I could easily get pictures of them both.

Wyatt's King Herod costume looks strikingly similar to his Harry Potter halloween costume from a few years ago.  I wonder if that's just coincidence.

After watching the whole program, I have to admit that had I gotten the chance to audition, I would've tried out for the role of the star.

I mean, check out that costume! And the star got to climb on top of the ladder and shine over everyone else.   Sometimes this particular star got a little tired and had to lean on her ladder to rest.  It was awesome.

Friday both Doc and I headed out to work and left his parents to fend for themselves.  And do you know what they did?  They went to the grocery store for us and turned our kitchen into a bakery in preparation for Saturday's bake sale.  That's just reason #976 why I love them.

That night, Doc wanted to load up on carbs before his big run on Saturday morning.  Our next door neighbor is a big-time marathoner and suggested he eat sushi instead of pasta the night before.  It doesn't feel as heavy and weigh you down as much.  Doc gave it a shot last year and it worked so we decided we better repeat the sushi meal this year.

I think sushi is so pretty!  I should've taken an "after" picture...there were four of us eating and we devoured every last bite.  It was delicious!

Saturday started really early as we all headed out the door for the marathon - Doc to run it and the rest of us to cheer him on.  I think my pictures from the morning will have to be a post of their own.

When we returned home, the baking continued.  I even fell asleep for a few minutes, but my awesome mother-in-law just kept on going.  Check out all the goodies she made!

Peppermint-topped vanilla cupcakes:

Individual sized brownies with a hershey kiss on top:

Another batch of brownies with peanut butter chips on top:

Shortbread dipped in chocolate:

Peanut butter cookies with miniature chocolate chips:

Shortbread with orange zest and cranberries:

Is your mouth watering yet?  That afternoon, when I was back in the woodshop getting ready for the shop sale, Doc's parents went to pick up the kids and then came back to keep baking.  I completely forgot to take pictures of the cookies Anna helped with.  They were so cute - Anna and Lala used food coloring to tint the dough and sprinkles and red hots to decorate.  There was a good assortment of Christmas trees, wreaths, and stars.  (I won't lie - I'm eating a  handful of them right now as I type this - yummy!)  We formed an assembly line that night to package all the cookies.  They were all bagged and tied with a red or green bow and then we boxed up to travel to the shop sale.

Since everyone in our family except me has a birthday in December, we also squeezed in a birthday party Saturday night.  Anna, Wyatt, and Doc all tore into their presents at the same time.

I think everyone was pleased with what they received.  Doc opened new dress shirts and ties.

Wyatt got a new basketball, a puzzle, and some moolah.

Anna opened a new hair dryer, a computer art game, and some spending loot.

Like Saturday, Sunday started pretty early.  This time we got cleaned up and headed to church.  I was a nervous wreck that morning because it was the day of the shop sale.  What if no one showed up?? What if no one liked any of my stuff?

The good news is that church seemed to calm me down.  Or it at least took my mind off the shop sale.  We had less than two hours between church and the start of the sale so what did we do?  We squeezed in another birthday party.  This time Beth got to open presents too.

Can you tell that Doc has to dress up for work everyday?  New dress shirts are always on his wish list.

The party didn't stop with presents.  In addition to all the sweets that were prepared for the bake sale, my mother-in-law also made a homemade-from-scratch chocolate birthday cake.  Is she amazing or what?

I just realized last night that we forgot to bring the leftover cake home with us.  Mom, I really hope you and Dad have enjoyed eating it.  I really wanted a piece of it last night!  At least I have the cookies here to keep me happy.  (Speaking of last night - Doc surprised me with appointments for both of us to get massages at a local spa since we survived the weekend.  Best. Husband. Ever.)

After we stuffed our faces full of cake, it was time for the sale to begin.  Doc wore his new birthday vest and greeted all of our guests.

Anna did a great job at the refreshment stand.  The kids were all supposed to be "growing their dollar(s)" for our church, but Anna did most of the work while the boys ran off and played football.

They raised $76 for the church!  We still have time left to grow our dollars even more.  Anyone have any great ideas?

Inside the shop, we managed to turn what normally looks like this...

...into somewhat of a "store."

And y'all, my fears and nervousness were for nothing because people came! Lots of them! And all at 1:00 on the dot!

It was a bit crazy for the first half hour and everyone filed inside to look around.  I decided to park it outside at a "checkout counter" of sorts.  If anyone had anything negative to say about any of my stuff, I definitely didn't want to be around to hear it.  Even sitting outside in the freezing cold is better than that.

I'm happy to say the sale was a success!  My sisters' paintings sold and lots of my stuff went too.  Almost all of the little things were snatched up, and even a few pieces of furniture found new homes.  While we still have a little bit of inventory left, I think the majority of it made its way out the door. Yay!

Doc's parents were helpful once again and drove the kids home while we cleaned up the aftermath.  We all met back at our house exhausted and ready to just sit.  We had pizza delivered and ate in front of the television.  Doc made me a fire and I finally, finally!, got to address my Christmas cards.

It may have been busy, but it was a great weekend.  I'll post the pics of Doc running shortly.  Oh, and if Wyatt read this blog (we've tried to keep it a secret from the kids), then I'd write a whole post dedicated to him since today is his birthday.  If you happen to run into him or talk to him on the phone, send him good wishes for his 11th year!

Oh Happy Day!

Somebody I know has a birthday today, and that somebody is... Doc's dad, Bill!

He was Doc's best man in our wedding, which I think is fitting because there's not a better man that could have stood by Doc's side on our big day.  Bill is a great dad to his children (and children-in-law!), a good husband to his wife, a wonderful Poppa to his grandchildren, a loyal employee to his company, an active volunteer to service men and women, and a host of other things that make him such a great man!

He's also a little bit like a turtle.

And that's just some of the many reasons we love him! Happy birthday, Bill.  Hope you have a great day!!

Thanksgiving and Football

This past weekend, we celebrated Thanksgiving with my mom's side of the family.  We don't get to see them often enough so I always look forward to their visits.  I usually have to think twice before calling any of the kids by name because they grow so much in between holidays!  Not to mention they're all close in age to the kiddos in our family. Everyone rolled into town at different times Friday night so we had a casual dinner of chili and hot dogs.  I was so busy loving on the babies that I never got my camera out.  Thanks to the rain, we were all stuck inside to play on Saturday morning.  I managed to drag a few family members out to the shop and put them to work.  Seriously, if I'm busy and you're just standing around, I will most definitely find a job for you.  I had my aunt painting in her nice clothes and my cousin helped build a bookshelf.  Probably not what they were expecting to do on our "Thanksgiving" morning.

My mom, with the help of some others, prepared a delicious non-traditional Thanksgiving feast for us.  It was so yummy! And it smelled good while cooking, too.  It made all the little kids belly up to the bar so they could be first in line.

Seeing them lined up at the kitchen island was so cute in real life. My photography skills are lacking though, so I wasn't able to get a super cute picture.  I'll count this one as a win since I have 3-4 people looking at the camera.  I would seriously love to know how professional photographers do it.

Parker was sad that he was being left out of the pictures so we stuck him in there too.

In the picture above we've got Gracie, age 8, next to her little brother Carter, age 2.  Bren, age 2, is in the middle. On the right are Neely, age 4, and her little sister Roany, age 2.  Parker, age 2, is standing up in the back next to my cousin Paige, mom to Neely and Roany and their little brother Sevens, age 1.  Not pictured is Jett, age 5, who hadn't made it back over from basketball camp.  (Also not pictured are Wyatt, age 10, and Anna, age 9, who were are their mom's for the weekend.)   Add to that 14 adults and 2 dogs and you can imagine how wild and crazy it was!  But we wouldn't have it any other way.

Mothers to two-year-old little girls, consider yourselves warned: this little guy is going to be a ladies' man. He's a charmer and has the best manners.  And ooooh, is he cute.  He will win you and your daughters over.

Two chairs, three booties:

During lunch, Parker channeled his inner Elton John and played some tunes for us.  He had to borrow Mr. Potato Head's glasses so he could read his sheet music.

I somehow managed to avoid taking pictures of any adults.  You're welcome?

Our company left Saturday afternoon and things returned to normal.  Doc picked up the kids so they could stay the night with us and I worked furiously in the shop.  Two and a half weeks to go!  I arrived home Saturday night just in time for some homemade pasta (delicious!) and a visit from our friends Sarah and Charlie.  Guess what they brought with them? The ingredients for cookies and cream milkshakes!  I don't know who was more excited, Anna or me.  Charlie took over in our kitchen and started throwing things in the blender.  I've never thought to add oreos to my milkshakes but man, were they good!  After dessert, Charlie and Doc wore the kids out in a game of football while I took Sarah on a shopping spree in my closet.  It was so good to see them.  And they're welcome back anytime, especially if milkshakes are involved!

By Sunday afternoon, the rain was gone and it was nice enough to play outside again.  Parker and Bren were in such funny moods, they kept making each other giggle about everything!

My dad and Doc joined the bigger kids in a game of football.  Here, Dad gave his teammates the play.

They had a tough defense to get past!

It didn't take Anna long to give up on the football and join Bren in what they do best: swing.

When I returned to the football game, Doc was calling the plays.  My favorite part of the huddle was when Jett looked up and said, "I don't know what 6 yards is!"

The offense lines up for the play.

Doc makes the throw to Jett.

And he's off!

Uh oh.  It looks like the scary defense has made it past Wyatt's block.

And he's down.

Will Wyatt be able to take it all the way this time?

The offense lines up again, this time with Jett as the quarterback.

The intimidating defense lets them know what they're up against.

The throw's been made and Wyatt's got the ball.  His teammates are set to block the defense.

He makes it past the defense and he's Go! Go! All! The! Way!

I'm not sure who won, but I guess Wyatt and Jett were winners either way.  Here are some more shots from the highlight reel.

Have you met Jett? If you have, you know he doesn't do anything, anything, without giggling. Seriously. Even when he's about to be tackled by his Poppy, he's laughing.

Bren didn't really get what all the excitement was about football.  I'm right there with her.

Unfortunately I had to leave the playing up to all of them and return to the shop to work, work, work!  Hopefully all my sweat and hardwork will pay off at the shop sale!

That was our weekend in a nutshell.  How was yours?

Family Picture Day

We've been experiencing a drought in our neck of the woods. So much so that there was a ban against farmers burning their fields.  Honestly, the lack of rain wasn't bothering me.  I don't like rainy days and I had already said goodbye to my summer flowers. Two weeks ago, I sent an email to everyone in my family announcing family picture day.  Mom and Dad's backyard, fall clothes, immediately following church on Sunday.  Everyone honored my request and was there on time.  Mom even prepared a big lunch for us.

And that's when the rain came.  It poured and poured and poured all day long.  Ugh.  I started having visions of last year's picture day - it was cancelled three times before it ever actually happened.

I mentally flipped through our calendar and remembered we were scheduled to have the kids again this past weekend.  Rain date - this past Saturday.  Same plan: Mom and Dad's backyard, fall clothes, 11:00 sharp.  Be there or be square.

This time the rain clouds stayed away and we were able to have our photo shoot.  Last year, we had a real photographer.  This year, we had me and a tripod.  This is what I learned:

1 - I am not a real photographer. 2 - The sun is very bright. 3 - Two-year-olds do not pose and smile for the camera. 4 - It doesn't take much to break a tripod.

Me trying to play photographer was a bit of a joke.  I really think I'm getting worse at it.  At any rate, we were able to get a semi-decent shot of the whole group so I'm happy to report that Mom and Dad will be able to send out a Christmas card this year. Phew.  And since some of you might be recipients of said Christmas card, I'm not going to share those pictures here.  Wouldn't want to spoil the surprise, now would we?

But don't you worry, I do have some non-Christmas-card-quality pictures from the photo shoot to share.

Anna is so great.  She let me take tons of pictures of her while I tried to get my camera settings right.

These two munchkins are not the best at modeling, but when they're this cute, how can you not look at them and say aaaawww?

It doesn't matter how hard I try, I cannot get Bren to smile at me when I have my camera.

Doc and his mini-me.

Mimi and Poppy.

These two are the best of friends these days.  I love seeing them play together.

Our first attempt at a picture with just the five grandkids was on the slide.  And it was hysterical watching the two little ones.  Oh to be Parker, the youngest of the five, who, while all his cousins were squinting, smiling, and holding him up, just laid back and basked in the sun.  What a life!

You gotta love this one too, when Bren just decided she'd had enough of that pose.

This little boy would slide all day long if you'd let him.

And Wyatt is the big climber of the group.

Best buds, I tell ya.

This picture cracks me up because, as you can see, right as I was taking the picture, Jett reached up and slapped his dad in the face.

And then in the next picture, I can just hear his dad saying, "Son, what were you thinking?"  And Jett just giggled uncontrollably.

(I laughed too.  I thought it was hilarious when it happened and seeing it in the pictures makes it even better.)

Parker's parents helped him walk up the slide. Excuse the very overexposed background.

I'm not going to spoil the surprise of our family's Christmas card picture either, but I will show you our shoes!

I tried to get one of just the two girls.  Bren's actually smiling at her mom but it almost looks like she's smiling for me.

That's about all I can share for now since some have to be kept secret.  Want a hint about our Christmas card pictures? We'll be wearing the clothes we're wearing in all of these pictures. :)
