Trunk or Treat

Doc left me for Buffalo, NY on Halloween, so I decided to join my parents and the rest of the family at church for Trunk or Treat.

My oldest brother and his wife actually parked their car in line with the other trunks, so we helped man their station and hand out candy.

Special delivery! Did someone order something? Oh wait, that's just Jett the UPS man.

That box there is full of candy!

His sister was the cutest little lady bug, but she doesn't like for me to take her picture.  She stayed close to her mama and helped hand out candy.

Is someone in trouble? Quick, call for help! No wait, Superman's already here!

Parker needed a few minutes to take it all in.  So many trunks! So many people! So much candy!

It didn't take him long to get the hang of it.

Poppy took Jett and Bren around to trick-or-treat and play games.

Parker hung back with his parents.

Bren and Parker took a break from trick-or-treating. Here she is making sure he knows that's her "prite" and not his.

I tried to add the pumpkin in for festive pictures.  They had to take a look inside.

Finally, the UPS man came back around and I tried so, so hard to get a picture of all three of them together. But, you know how it goes.  Kids + candy = yea right, no time for pictures.

This is pretty much how they look in every picture...

Superman had a blue mustache for most of the night.  It's from the blue gatorade he brought with him.

"Is that it? Surely there's more candy in there."

We didn't get to see Anna and Wyatt in their costumes in person, but we did get a picture.

Wyatt = Roman Emperor; Anna = Minnie Mouse

Here's Anna with the cute pumpkin she carved.

And here's Wyatt's Notre Dame pumpkin.  Pretty impressive, if you ask me.

That's a wrap for Halloween.  Now it's time to get ready for Thanksgiving!

Missing Memaw

Today is Halloween.  It's the anniversary of the day I lost my grandmother.

The picture above is one my mom carries in her purse.  I scanned it which is why it looks so worn.  Worn with love.  It's my mom's favorite picture, and I really like it, too.  It's been two years since we had to say goodbye to Memaw and for me, it seems like the second year was harder than the first.

I feel like I think about her a lot.  Probably because I have silly daily reminders of her.  For instance, this eye shadow.

I wear the green and brown shades just about every day.  So why does this remind me of Memaw? Cause they were hers.  When she was still with us, I used to call "dibs" on her makeup collection.  But when the time came to actually sort through it all, it just wasn't as much fun.  I grabbed a few eyeshadow cases and that was it.  This one has become my favorite.  The brush is missing a sponge - that's from her.  And there's a worn spot in that hot pink shade that is definitely from her! I don't think I'm brave enough for that color.

This perfume reminds me of her, too.

The Pleasures on the left was a gift from her.  I used to borrow hers when I was at her house, so she started giving it to me for Christmas.  I think I got a bottle of it for at least 3 years in a row and I used to joke that I'd never run out of Pleasures! But now I'm on my last bottle and I've found myself not using it as much because I don't want it to run out.  The Amarige on the right is a scent I took from her collection.  It smells like her. I love it.

This is my favorite reminder of Memaw - her diamond necklace.

It was hard to photograph with my phone, so sorry for the poor quality.  My grandmother wore this necklace everyday.  She switched the chain from silver and gold depending on what other jewelry she was wearing - that's where I get it from.  I don't wear it everyday but I do wear it often.  Probably at least 3 days a week.  Aside from my wedding rings, it's my most prized possession.  I wore it first on my wedding day as my "something old" and now when I wear it, I constantly touch it.  Maybe to remember her or maybe to make sure it's still there.  You can't really tell from the picture, but it's made up of 5 diamonds.  I'm sure it's just coincidence, but I like to think each diamond represents one of her five grandchildren.  I think the necklace is actually supposed to belong to my aunt, so Aunt Kim, if you want it back, you just have to let me know!

As I mentioned before, the second year seems like it's been harder.  The daily reminders make me smile, but they also make me think that it sure has been a while since we travelled to her house.  The thought of never visiting my mom's hometown again makes me sad.  I miss us all crowding into her little house and sleeping wherever we could find a spot.  I am thankful for all the memories I have with her - from spending weeks with her in the summers to driving to her house from college, from eating her pancakes to learning how to decorate a carrot cake, from painting sweatshirts to making cheerleading signs.  But even with all those good memories, I find myself wishing for more.  I wish she could have been at my wedding (even though I know she had the best seat in the house).  I wish she could meet Anna and Wyatt.  I wish she could teach me how to really use my sewing machine and what projects I should do next in the shop.  She was a crafty lady.

I tried to find some more pictures on my computer but unfortunately there aren't any on here. Oh, except for this gem I just found:

Ha! This picture is terrible of everyone, but it makes me laugh.  Thanksgiving weekend, 2008.  Those of us that could, met at Memaw's house so we could clean everything out and get it ready to sell.  It was a long day.  That evening, my mom finally started going through her closet and what did she find? A bag of hats! How, oh how, could I have not known about all of these hats??  I set my camera timer for ten seconds, put a hat on everyone's head, and this is what we got.

Don't worry, I took some individual shots, too.

I do wish I could've seen my grandmother wearing these hats! If I'm not mistaken, the bag-o-hats now resides in my mom's closet.  She just couldn't bear the thought of getting rid of them.  If anyone's looking for a last-minute Halloween costume, we've got hats!

In a few short weeks I'll get to see this side of the family for Thanksgiving.  It'll be different, because we won't be at Memaw's house, but I have a feeling she'll be there.  I like to imagine her and Pepaw sitting on the edge of a cloud, swinging their legs and feeding Mickey (the dog) peppermints, laughing and watching all the fun we're having.

Birthday!

Pardon the interruption to the farm posts, but today is a special lady's birthday...Doc's mom, Patricia!

I can't find a picture of her by herself...she always seems to have this old guy with her. :)

I hope you have the happiest of days, and that that old guy spoils ya rotten!   We love you and can't wait to see you soon!

Bend It Like Beckham

How in the world is it Thursday night already??  Sunday night when I got home from the wedding and was exhausted from the weekend's festivities, I thought this week would be nice and relaxed.  I guess that was before work decided to punch me in the gut and then kick me while I was down. I have been insanely busy.  I've had to attend way too many meetings this week and you know what? I can't get my work done when I'm stuck sitting in meetings. I have a pile of work on my desk that must get done tomorrow, plus two more meetings scheduled. So yeah, I had the intentions of posting pictures all week long, but now here I am at 9:30 on Thursday, waiting for Doc to get home from the airport, and trying to play catchup. So, on to today's blog post topic: soccer. You wanna know the truth? I have no idea what "Bend It Like Beckham" means, but I think it's soccer-ish. Right? I'm pretty sure it's the title of a movie, but is it also referring to David Beckham?

Some girls think he's cute.

Meh. Doesn't really do it for me.

Allow me to introduce you to the cutest soccer player I know.

Meet Jett: #3 on the field, #1 in my heart.

Cute, right?  And he's good at soccer too! Well, when he's not sitting on the ball...

I don't know if this can be considered "bending it," but it looks like pretty good form to me.

Here are some action shots from the game on Saturday.

Whoopsie...here it looks like he may have switched from futball to football.

He may spend a fair amount of time on the ground from run-ins like the one pictured above, but he also plays good defense and scores goals. Last Saturday he scored 2!

You know who really enjoys watching him play?  Hint: it's not his sister...

Another hint: he looks like this from the back...

It's P-diddy!

Check out his crazy wind-blown hair.

Won't be long before he's out on the field, too!

[Random side note 1: Today is day 6 for the manicure and still no chips.]

[Random side note 2: I got my flu shot today. About 10 days ago I got a tetanus and pertussis shot. Both of my arms might fall off, but I'm officially vaccinated. Lock jaw, whooping-cough, and swine flu can't get me now.]

Family Work Day

Happy fall, y'all!

We had a beautiful day here yesterday! The weather was so nice we were able to leave the doors and windows to the shop open and enjoy the nice fall breeze. In honor of the season, I made a set of these wooden pumpkins.  They'll be going in a silent auction at my church this weekend.

Along with the pumpkins will be several other things that we've made - a plant stand, a couple clocks, some picture frames, Razorback paraphernalia.  We have been super busy getting our donations ready! In fact, yesterday I had to enlist the help of Anna to be my personal helper so we could get everything finished in time. She is an excellent painter.

Also in the shop was a father-son carpenter team. They worked hard all day building a bench together.  The son did all the measuring and marking.

And the dad made all the cuts.

Once they had all their materials cut and ready to go, they assembled the bench together. Doc let Wyatt use the drill to screw in the screws.

And after a few short hours, they had completed their first father-son woodworking project!

Looks like a perfect bench, if you ask me!  Hope you all had as nice a Sunday as we did.
