Thanksgiving

I know it's almost a week later, but I hope you all had a great Thanksgiving holiday!  I know we sure did.  Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday because it's the only time where I get more than one day off from work in a row (without having to use my vacation time).  Our office is closed both Thursday and Friday the week of Thanksgiving.  At Christmas, we only get Christmas day.  I enjoy the holiday for all the normal reasons, too - being with family, eating lots of good food, reflecting on all the things I have to be thankful for, yadda, yadda, yadda - but I really love me a four-day weekend too!  Our CEO even gave us an early dismissal on Wednesday, so it was kinda like a 4 1/2 day break.  For once, I almost had a teacher schedule! I will confess that I ended up putting my Christmas tree up that Wednesday night.  I know, I know.  I'm ashamed of myself too.  I'm a big advocate for giving Thanksgiving the attention it deserves and not letting Christmas stomp all over it, so I get annoyed with how early some Christmas decorations come out.  But since I found myself off work early and knew I wasn't hosting anyone the next day for Thanksgiving, I went ahead and drug all the boxes out.  Confession #2?  I only halfway decorated.  I'll tell you about that later...for now, let's focus on the subject at hand: Thanksgiving.

Thursday morning I got up early and went to work in the woodshop.  That's actually when I put the finishing touches on the red buffet.  It was nice to actually be productive and check something off my to-do list before stuffing my face full of food.  We always spend Thanksgiving day with my dad's side of the family, and this year was no exception.  It was my uncle's turn to host so all we had to do was show up!  Our family is rapidly growing and getting spread out, so unfortunately, there were quite a few folks missing this year.  We still had a nice meal and enjoyed each other's company.  The little kids enjoyed putting on their swimsuits and getting to play in the hot tub.  Sadly, I didn't have my camera so I don't have any pictures to show for this celebration.

My mom is one of just two children.  Up until a few years ago, we always spent Thanksgiving at my Grandmother's house.  My mom's sister's family would come too and we would all pile into the teeny tiny house and stay the night.  It was crowded, but I wouldn't have had it any other way!  Since my Memaw is not with us anymore, we alternate the holidays between my mom's house and my Aunt Kim's.  This year, it was my Aunt's turn to host Thanksgiving (so they'll come to my mom's house at Christmas).  Friday we all loaded up the cars and headed to their town.  With all of our different schedules, we left in shifts, but by the time dinner rolled around Friday night, everyone had arrived.

My mom and her sister, Kim.

There are lots of little kids on this side of my family, and I love watching them all play together.  My aunt has a big selection of dress-up clothes, and you better believe they pulled out every piece of it Friday night!

Note: all the pictures in this post were taken by my sister-in-law, Erin.  All credit goes to her.

Parker spent most of the night as a cowboy with a coon hat on.

We tried hard to get pictures with all of them dressed up at the same time.  Easier said than done.  Here's an attempt at getting Carter (a Police Man, but really he's just holding handcuffs), Bren (a pretty Princess), Parker (the shirtless Cowboy), and Jett (a Cowboy, even though he's wearing an Indian shirt and a coon hat).

Brennie and Parkie.  Every coon-hat-wearin' cowboy needs a woman, and Parker chooses Bren.

The boys LOVED playing with the guns.  They apparently don't love any of us since they kept shooting us.

I think Bren was glad when Roanie finally showed up so she could have a Princess friend.

These two boys hit it right off!  It had been a year since they'd seen each other, but you wouldn't have known it.

My cousin Joel did most of the cooking for Friday night's meal.  He has a large fire pit at his house and spent the afternoon grilling chicken breasts and wings, pork tenderloin, bologna, pineapples, and vegetables.  It was all so yummy!

Doc and our kids were the last to arrive.  Doc didn't get the memo that this was a casual dinner...

Anna and Wyatt are at the age where they don't want to touch in photos.  It's a challenge just to get them this close to each other!

After we stuffed ourselves silly, I sat with Anna and Gracie while they warmed up to each other.  It was their first time to really meet and, even though they are a couple years apart in age, by the end of the weekend they were best of friends.  In fact, Anna ended up leaving us and staying the night with Gracie at her house Friday night.  I feel like I should note that there was a makeup session that went along with the dress up.  Gracie doesn't wear purple eye shadow and hot pink blush on a regular basis.

Here are a few more snapshots from after dinner.

My aunt prepared a nice, warm breakfast for those of us that stayed at her house.  The boys all woke up with some pretty sweet hairdos.

After breakfast we headed to my cousin Paige's house to ride horses.  Stay tuned - those pictures are next!

Family Pics

Last weekend everyone in my family gathered so we could attempt some family portraits.  It was a windy day so it could've been disastrous, but I'm pleased to say we managed to get some decent shots!  I'm not going to share a couple of my favorites just yet since they'll be used on Christmas cards, but here are a few from the shoot. We met at this really old house that sits on the side of the road in my home town.  Luckily, it didn't fall over while we were there!

Kissin' cousins!

My parents and all their grandchildren.

Same picture, but with the middle generation added.  I don't love this one since we seem to be standing in the shadows, but oh well.

My oldest brother, Nick, and his family.

My other brother, Ben, and his family.

Me and my family!  (Not my favorite one of us, but ok.)

My parents.  I love this one of them!

The last shot of the day...after everyone was tired of smiling for the camera.

(I had to make that one smaller because my blog wanted to crop out Jett and Wyatt.)

Since Ramer couldn't be in that last photo, here's one of just him that I took several weeks back and forgot to post.

That's a wrap!

Weekend In Review

Even though nothing spectacular happened, this has been a really great weekend!  The weather was nice, we got to sleep in, I got lots accomplished, and there was nothing we HAD to do.  I love a weekend like that. Friday night we party-hopped.  We started out the evening with a surprise party for my friend Kim.  (You may remember that I have helped with a few rooms in her house, seen here, here, and here.)  I actually remembered to bring my camera and guess how many pictures I took....one.  Whomp, whomp.  Me and the birthday girl?  Nah, just a picture of this balloon.

Happy birthday, Kim!  Don't worry, I won't tell anybody how old you are...

Doc and I ducked out of the surprise party early because we had 9:00 dinner reservations.  Yes, 9 PM.  Yes, I had to take a nap after work so I could stay awake long enough for dinner.

The meal was good, but the company is what made it so great.  We were joined by 16 of our favorite people.

Since our reservation was so late, we met up for pre-dinner drinks.  A few of the guys got things going with some Jameson and Butterscotch Schnapps shots followed by an orange juice chaser.

The bartender swore that the combination tasted like pancakes.  I think that sounds disgusting but those that gave it a try said it was pretty good.

I really have no comments about this next picture, but I do feel that it should be posted.

The weather was so nice Saturday that I got up and went for a long morning walk.  I spent the bulk of the day working in the shop and made good progress on a lot of my projects.  I even finished a couple that I'll show you this week.  (I promise I'll post more than once this week...)

That afternoon we stopped by my brother's house to check out something he'd been working on.  We had Lolli with us, which absolutely thrilled Bren.  She LOVES Lolli.  I'm not sure if the feelings are mutual.  Bren likes to hold Lolli and it's usually not in the most comfortable position for poor Lolli, so it looks a little something like this.

I know these picture are awful quality - I was using my phone - but bear with me because I think they're pretty funny.

So Bren likes to hold Lolli but Lolli doesn't really love it.  At one point, we walked in Bren's room to see her standing on her bed, holding a squirming Lolli, and smiling at herself in the mirror above her dresser.  I guess sometimes you just need to see how you look holding a puppy dog.

A few minutes later, Bren got so excited.  "I put her in my box!  Now she can't get away!"  The "box" she was referring to?  Her laundry hamper.

Poor Lolli.

We're dog-sitting my parents' dog, Henry, this weekend so we had him with us too.  Bren had Doc put Henry in the "box" with Lolli, but she decided he made the "box" too heavy so he had to get out.  You know what's coming next, don't you?

Bren got in the "box."

Oh man, that girl cracks me up.  (This morning at church, she had on a headband of feathers that she'd made in Sunday School.  "Hey Bren!  Are you a little Indian?"  She told me no so I asked her what she was.  "A chicken!")

Tonight, after getting out of the shower, I walked in our bedroom to see that Doc had taken a page out of Bren's book.  I saw this on the floor.

Doc had a smirk on his face and even Henry was sitting on the bed, looking a little smug.  I got closer and sure enough, poor Lolli was trapped underneath.

Before anyone runs off and reports us to PETA, let me assure you that Lolli was not harmed in any of these laundry hamper escapades.  She's perfectly fine and is as wild and crazy as ever.  I just won't be surprised if she runs under the bed the next time I start doing laundry.

I'm pleased to say I have officially started my Christmas shopping AND our Christmas cards have been ordered.  I don't know why, but having those ordered makes me feel so much less stressed!  I'm excited for the next few days: 3-day work week, Thanksgiving food, and getting to see all of our family.  Should be a good week!

A Happy Halloween

Raise your hand if you can't believe it's already November.  Mine is up high!  I had a mini freakout when I started receiving emails last week about what I want for Christmas.  It's time for that already?!  Suddenly I feel behind - I haven't even started my shopping yet!  Deep breaths.  We haven't even had Thanksgiving yet. Another successful halloween is in the books.  First, let's start with our kids.  I didn't get to see them in costumes in person, so Doc had to send me a picture.  Wyatt is a dementor (from Harry Potter but I have no idea what that really means) and Anna is a greek goddess, maybe Athena?  I asked Anna who Athena is but I don't think she really even knows...I'm pretty sure the costume was chosen for its cuteness.  Nothing wrong with that!

I have to confess that I was the Halloween scrooge Monday night.  I didn't think I would be at home during our neighborhood's trick-or-treating hours, so I didn't buy any candy.  Then I found myself at home alone with still an hour and a half left to go.  I turned off all the lights and hid in the bedroom.  Lolli barked her head off every time the doorbell rang.  I hate that I missed all the cute trick-or-treaters, but I didn't have anything to give them!

Our church had its annual Trunk or Treat event on Sunday night, so we were able to go see the niece and nephews all dressed up.  Just like on his birthday, Parker dressed up as Spiderman.  I asked him to give me a smile but this is the best I could get.  His lopsided spider eyes cracked me up all night.  I have no idea how he saw anything because they were never lined up with his eyes!

By the time I made it to the church, little Bren had already made the rounds filling up her bag, and parked it in her Mom's trunk to eat all her candy.  I tried every way possible to coax her out to play with me, but she was too busy.  I can't compete with a bag full of candy!  After changing her mind 1,284 times, she ended up as Pinkalicious.

It took me a while to find Jett.  He was off running from trunk to trunk, getting more candy and playing all the games.  Of course, the fact that he was camouflaged didn't make it any easier for me to spot him.

Speaking of games, here's Parker trying to play basketball like the bigger boys.

Ramer made an appearance at Trunk-or-Treat too.

I just now realized I never got a full shot of him in his monster get-up.  Darn.  It was really sunny that day, so most of my pictures look pretty bad.

Go figure that as soon as Ramer arrived, Bren finally hopped out of the car.  I'm not sure that she loved the idea of her Mom holding another baby.

Quick family photo of my brother Ben's family.  There may be more closed eyes than open ones, I can't really tell.

My parents with the youngest grandchildren.  And look, Ramer's waving to the camera!

The other two kids jumped in for a picture, too.

Doc was standing with my two brothers, so I told them to get together for a picture.  Typical guys, they stood about three feet away from each other.  I asked them to get closer - it was even ok if they touched - so I could fit them all in the frame.  So, of course, they gave me this.  I feel like it should be on some kind of awkward family photo website.

I let them have a re-do.  Cause I'm nice like that.

Got one of the girls too!  Except that I look like I need a nap.

And that wraps up our halloween!  How was yours?

A Day at the Park

October has been kinda crazy.  My husband has been on 11 planes this month and still has two more to go, which is to say I haven't seen him very much.  There was also a weekend road trip mixed in there too.  I don't remember the last time he was home for more than 2 days at a time.  He is doing great at his new job, though, so it's all been worthwhile.  I'm a proud wife.  Oh, and the good news is there's no travel planned for November.  Hooray! I'm really behind on posts, so for now I'm just going to catch up on some happenings from last weekend.  We had our kids and for a little while on Saturday, all six of my parents' grandchildren were at our house.

I know I'm biased, but those are some of the cutest kids I know, even if I can't get them all to smile for the camera at the same time.  (Sorry for the cutoffs on the edge, the real picture isn't like that.)

As you can tell, the little kids found a bag of balloons and needed them to be blown up.  Whatever it takes to keep them happy, I guess.  We took a walk to the park and the balloons had to come with us.

Thank goodness for Anna.  She was our resident balloon-blower-upper.

Look who decided to smile for my camera!

Parker couldn't be bothered for a smile.  He was too busy watching Jett and Wyatt throw the football and trying to figure out how to get them to let him play.

Once at the park, the big boys made up football obstacles like throwing from the tire swing or throwing over the whole playset.

This may come as a surprise to anyone who knows Bren, but she actually walked past the swings first and went straight for the slide.

Parker gave up on trying to play football with the big boys and climbed up to the fort.

In addition to being the resident balloon-blower-upper, Anna is also our resident monkey.  She is always hanging upside down from something.

Of course, Parker saw her flipping and needed to do that too.  It's hard to get up there when you're short, though.

It's good to have big cousins that will give you a little boost.

After hanging out for a minute, he decided the swings were more his thing.

I guess playgrounds get old after awhile, because before I knew it, we were having races rolling down the hill.

That was fun until we had a head-on collision.  Ouch!  Thankfully, everyone survived.

The girls had already gone home so we decided to join them.  It was getting dark anyway.  It was a good day at the park!
