The NB Diaries: Chapter Two

Don't know who NB is? You can read Chapter One here. This morning, my work phone rang and NB's name was glowing on the caller ID. She asked if I had a few minutes to come to her office to talk with her.

I sat down in her office with my pen and paper and prepared myself for whatever she was about to say. I still can't read her; I didn't know if this was going to be a good talk or a bad talk.

NB: I was wondering if you could do something for me. Me: Okay. NB: I like to look at pictures. I'm a very visual learner and it really helps me learn if I can look at pictures. Even things like T-accounts help me. Me: Um, okay. NB: Would you draw me a picture? Me: Ummmmmm. NB: I just don't really understand yet the process of the Big Report We Prepare Daily. I think a picture of the process could help me understand it. Me: Oh. Okay.  So you want, like, a hand-drawn picture? **I start getting a little nervous. She's very OCD. What if my drawing isn't good enough? What if my lines aren't straight?** NB: Yes, you can draw it by hand if you want. Let's meet again at 2pm to go over it, so just make it as good as you can in that amount of time.

So, off I went, back to my little cubicle to start drawing my picture.  I decided to sketch it out by hand and then use Microsoft Visio to put it on the computer and make it look better. I spent a lot of time formatting and lining things up. I let a coworker read over it to make sure I didn't leave out any steps in the Big Report We Prepare Daily process.

Two o'clock rolled around so I grabbed my picture and headed to her office. When I handed it to her, her first response was, "Wow. You have OCD."

Me: No, you're the OCD one.

I was in her office about an hour or so going over the Big Report We Prepare Daily process. It's a long process, and pretty involved. It's not bad if everything runs smoothly, but there are a lot of opportunities for something to go wrong. And we have to go through it everyday.

We spent a quite a bit of time working on one area in particular. I was trying to explain to her why we have to manually correct things and how we can't just correct them on the front end.

Me: Everyone in the company has access to this and can change it. That's why there are so many mistakes. NB: Am I the only one that sees this as a huge problem? Me: Oh, no. Not at all. This is one of my biggest pet peeves at work. It can get me fired up in no time. NB: So have you tried to do anything to change it? Me: It's been a project on my list of things to do for two years now. A lot of it is just out of my hands. NB: Maybe since I'm the newbie I can bug some people and get some answers. Me: I think that would be great. Any help you'd be able to get on this would be awesome, and very much appreciated. **We spend a few more minutes talking about all the different ways errors can occur on this subject. I do a lot of explaining.** NB: Well, it sounds like this is something that might take a good bit of time to get resolved. I'm just going to write myself a note to remember all of this and that you and I are going to work on it. **She puts down the red pen she'd been writing with and fumbles through the container of pens on her desk.** NB: This is important and I don't want to forget so I'm going to write it in green.

And so she put her head down and scribbled out a note on her pad of paper. Then she read it aloud to me.

NB: Lucy and NB kick asses and take names. We will get what we want.

And then we went back to talking about my picture.

All Aboard!!

A few weekends ago, Doc and I gathered up some of our friends, hopped on the Amtrak train, and headed to New Orleans for the weekend.  Have you ever ridden on the Amtrak? I love it. If it didn't take so long, I would definitely choose it over air flights anytime. The seats are a lot bigger and much more comfy. You don't have an assigned seat. There are no seat belts. You can walk around anytime. There's a dining cart and a lounge cart or you can bring your own cooler. And the bathrooms aren't that bad. Much better than a plane, right?

Side note: I was terrified of going to the bathroom the first time I rode the train (about a year ago). Someone told me that you "went" right on the tracks, as in you could see them when you looked down at the toilet. I was so afraid that a rock would be thrown up by a wheel and hit my hiney. Or worse, that I'd be able to see what the person in the restroom next to me was doing. What if there was splashing? Ew. I can safely assure you, though, that this is not true. There is nothing to be afraid of in the bathroom; the toiled looks just like an airplane toilet and you can't see the railroad tracks.

While the train is super fun and a comfortable ride, we did run into one negative aspect on this trip. There is a draw bridge on the route to New Orleans and if the draw bridge decides not to work and gets stuck in the up position, that means the train can't go. And we get stuck in Hammond, Louisiana for a few hours.

You know what you should do if you're spending the afternoon in Hammond, LA (population 17,639)? You should get off the train, stretch your legs, make friends with the random person selling frozen daquiris, and sit back and enjoy the beautiful day!

And if sitting back and sipping on daquiris isn't your thing, you can just flex your muscles and show everyone how manly you are.

Maybe I should back up a little and give some introductions. These are our new friends, Chris and Allison.

Chris was sweet enough to go pick Allison a pretty flower. He said he got one for me too, but as he handed it to me, the flower fell right off the stem and landed at my feet.

So I'm not sure how long that friendship's going to last. They're still in a probationary period.

(Just kidding.)

This is Jenny and Darrin.

Here they looked all happy-go-lucky but really, Darrin's a little nervous and Jenny has no idea the excitement that's in store for her later in the day.

Charlie's the other friend pictured with the guys. His wife, Sarah, was sound asleep on the train after a long flight in from LA the night before. Charlie hooked us up with the daquiris but Sarah missed all of good ol' Hammond, LA.

And last, but certainly not least, is my husband, Doc.

He makes Hammond, LA look good, doesn't he? :)

After a two-hour delay, the whistle finally blew and we were back on the train and leaving Hammond behind.

New Orleans greeted us with a parade outside our hotel. Unfortunately, I didn't have my camera ready so you'll have to take my word for it.

After quickly getting cleaned up, we headed out to dinner together. Jenny and Darrin were running behind so they were going to meet us at the restaurant. We walked a few blocks, waited our turn, and were finally seated at our table at Ralph and Kacoo's.  Just as we were getting ready to order, Jenny and Darrin arrived...and look at what was on her hand!

Isn't it beautiful?! Turns out, they had left the hotel early and gone for a carriage ride. Midway through the ride, Darrin asked Jenny to be his wife.

It didn't take long for us to order champagne and start celebrating! Yay, engagement! Yay, love!

I left my camera at the hotel so I didn't get pictures of the newly engaged couple, but luckily, Allison had hers. You can see pictures from dinner on her blog right here.

I did, however, have my camera with me aaaaall day long on Saturday, so there are lots more pictures to come!

Eggs and Confetti

Sunday morning, we put on our new Easter clothes and headed to church.

The service was good. Long, but still good.  My mom played "How Great Thou Art" with the handbell choir to start the service and they did a great job! The sanctuary was packed so they had a great big audience for their first performance.

After church the whole crew headed over to my parents' house for a big Easter feast.  The babies had a little lunch date together.

(I apologize for the blurriness in some of these pictures. I obviously did not have my focus right.)

A looooves her only girl cousin. She thinks baby B is "so nice."

W had a few card tricks to show my dad.

But it turned out that my dad had a few card tricks up his sleeve too.

After lunch, the kids started going a little crazy waiting for us to get all the eggs hidden.

The big kids had to wait even longer because we decided the little babies would go first. Unfortunately, Baby P was asleep so Baby B had to hunt all by herself.  Her older brother and cousins made sure she had plenty of help.

And, then it was FINALLY time for the big kids to hunt. We lined them up at the front door, shouted that they could go, and they were off!

J-bo got lots of eggs, and he managed to find a lady bug too!

The egg hunt was fun, but I thought the confetti was one of the best parts. We bought these eggs at Kroger to smash on top of each others heads.  We looked like we had been to a grand party after we were done!

We finished up the afternoon with some yummy dessert....chocolate cups of ice cream and homemade cookies. Yum!

I'd be a very bad aunt if I stopped there. Baby P finally woke up from his nap and had an Easter egg hunt and confetti party all on his own. My mom sent me some iPhone photos so I could see.

Sorry for the really long post. I hope you all had a happy Easter too!

Easter Weekend

Meet Lala and Poppa.

They are Doc's parents and we were lucky enough to have them join us for the Easter weekend. They arrived on Thursday before the kids joined us on Friday, so we were able to have a nice meal, just the four of us. And we got to use our fancy dishes for the first time ever.

It was nice to be able to sit and catch up with them before the weekend officially got started. Once the kids arrived, things were full steam ahead!

After dinner Friday night, we played a few games of Funglish - boys versus girls.  This game is a great way for the kids to get to work on using descriptive words, but its fun for all of us. You just choose different adjectives to try to get your opponents to guess the word you drew. Both teams were pretty good, but I think the boys ultimately came out ahead.

We could not have asked for better weather this weekend. It was so nice! We spent as much time outside as possible, just enjoying the warm sunshine.

Poppa cut back some of our plants...

...while Doc supervised.

Lala finished her book...

...and A jumped rope.

Even though it looks like Minnie's giving me the stink-eye here, I really think she enjoyed hanging out in the sunshine too.  You can see she had already spent a little bit of time rolling in the grass. Oh, the life of a dog.

And in case I look a little bit fatter the next time you see me, it's because we made cookies again. And I can't stop eating them.

Sunday was such a great day it deserves a whole post of its own, so check back for it soon!

He is Risen!

Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life.  He who believes in me will live, even though he dies; and whoever lives and believes in me will never die." --John 11:25-26

Happy Easter from our family to yours!
