December Fun

Before we get into all of our actual Christmas festivities, I want to document some of the other fun things we did during the month so I don't forget.  As hard as I tried to shop and wrap gifts early so that we could sit back and just enjoy the season, it still got really busy and crazy!  We had so much to do that there was little time for rest...maybe that's what we'll do in 2015.

My aunt and cousin came to visit one Friday night so we joined them for dinner at my parents' house.  I didn't really take any pictures of us there, but earlier that day Katie Wynn and I went to the bakery to pick up some cupcakes and I snapped these of her in the car.  She requests "her" (my) sunglasses every time she's in her car seat so she can "see better."

That night was a big one for Thomas as it was the first time he got to sit in the real high chair!  This chair is the same one my brothers and I all used and Thomas makes grandchild number seven to sit in it.  We had to tie him in so he wouldn't slide down but he loved sitting at the table like a big boy.

We had friends over for dinner one night and Katie Wynn absolutely loved having friends over to play with her.  We brought out the big box of balls for them to play in which is always a big hit with our visitors.

What's more fun that three kiddos in the tub?  Three kiddos in the tub with GLOWSTICKS!

At one point in the night they got really quiet, so I went back to check on them.  I found all three kids in our master bedroom pulling out toys together.  And, the evening wasn't over without one more climb into the box of balls.

The only encounter we had with Santa Claus this year was at church.  There was a pizza lunch for the kids following the service one Sunday and Santa made a surprise appearance.  As we waited in line to have our picture taken, I really talked it up to Katie Wynn about getting to sit in his lap and tell him what kind of presents she wanted him to bring.  I also told her she'd have to be really brave so that Thomas wouldn't be scared.  She was all about it.  Until our turn finally came, that is...  Thomas went first and just laughed and laughed at Mr. Claus.

I had to peel a screaming Katie Wynn off of me to get her to sit in his lap.  Even with Thomas still laughing and having a good time, she cried and begged to be picked up.  We took a family picture to show her that Santa wasn't someone to be scared of.  (When KW recounted this experience in the car on the way home, she told us that she loved Santa Claus and that Thomas cried but that she did not.  If you say so, sister.)

Some friends invited us to join them on a trip to the zoo to see their Christmas lights.  Since it was cold out, we dropped Thomas off with my parents and just took Katie Wynn.  We took our wagon for the girls to ride in and they loved it.  It was perfect for the zoo!

The picture below on the right is of lights hanging over the area of the zoo where we were married.  Had I known they could put lights up on these wires, I totally would've requested some twinkle lights up there on our big day!  Shucks!

After a ton of fun seeing the Zoo Lights, we went out for pizza.  The girls had fun admiring this little Christmas tree that was next to our table.

Katie Wynn had a Christmas party at daycare so we put together some gifts for all of her teachers.  I wanted to do something stress-free (no baking! no crafting!) and I think what we came up with was both easy and super cute.  We took Sonic cups, filled them with red tissue paper, added a Sonic gift card and some Christmas candy, topped them with a lid and straw, and added a cute tag that read, "Have a BLAST this holiday season!"

IMG_2168.JPG

For her classmates, I just added a quick tag to a bag of Teddy Grahams that said, "Have a BEARY Merry Christmas!"  Gotta love easy.  We also made a little happy for our neighbors' mailboxes.  They were a bag of Hershey's kisses and a chapstick with a notes that read, "Merry KISS-mas and CHAPPY New Year!"  We added dog bones too to the neighbors that we knew had dogs.

IMG_2173.JPG

You know, now that I think about it, I didn't hear from anyone that received any of these gifts.  I hope that doesn't mean they didn't like them!

For a few days in a row, Katie Wynn got on a kick of stealing Thomas's socks off his little feet and putting them on her hands.  She told her Daddy that they were keeping her hands "nice and cold."  She keeps us laughing!

I posted this picture on Instagram but it's worth re-sharing.  Thomas is officially crawling now but at the time this was taken, he was just scooting backwards.  He was busy scooting himself around the room when he scooted himself right into a little bit of a pickle...stuck under the bed!

On the 23rd of December, we joined the Earls and Cooks for dinner.  My sweet Thomas is always a good poser for pictures.

Things usually start to get a little hairy though when I add his sister in for the pics.  Is there some understood sibling rule about never smiling at the same time?

Baby Henry joined them on the couch for some pictures too!

And, you know, the photoshoot was going just fine until Katie Wynn tackled her little brother.

Everett wasn't feeling up for pictures since he'd just opened up some fun new toys.  It didn't take KW long to join him down on the floor.  Toys are way more fun than pictures, I guess.

Here are a couple more random shots of Katie Wynn playing her version of dress up.  In one picture she's dressed as Santa Claus and the other she's dressed as Thomas...turns out putting his pj pants on instead of her own is kinda hard!

On the second to last day of December, I was lucky enough to get to sleep in with both my babies.  (No really, I'm not being sarcastic...they both slept til almost 8!)  We had fun lazing around in bed taking pictures.  By the time these were taken, Daddy had already gotten up, given Thomas a quick bottle and gotten him back asleep, gone for a run, and taken a shower!  (Showoff.)  My mom and I always joke about how KW looks like she's wearing a wig when her hair isn't pulled back with a bow.  I can't help but be jealous of her hair.

And on the very last day of December, my little munchkin pulled up to a standing position in his bed!!  This mama was not ready for this at all!  Especially when, while sitting on the floor taking pictures, I realized he was leaning over to see me and was about to fall out.  Woo - that would've been a major mom fail! Doesn't he just look so proud of himself in these pictures? He was able to pull up on his bumper because I sat him up in his crib.  Thankfully he can't get into a sitting up position from laying down yet, so we have a few more days before we really have to lower his crib for night time.

Ok, I know I just made it through the whole month of December, but next I'll be back with four separate posts for each of our Christmas celebrations!

Lala and Poppa Came to Town!

The day after Thanksgiving, Matt's parents - otherwise known as Lala and Poppa - arrived at our house for a 12 day visit.  We were so glad to see them!  Not only were they coming to celebrate the December birthdays with us, but they were also doing us a HUGE favor by keeping our rugrats while we were in Palm Springs.  I was glad that Katie Wynn and Thomas would be in good hands while we were away, and I was also glad that we'd get to visit with them for a few days before we left!

Their first couple of nights here, we had the big kids at our house too.  The babies got to wear their Christmas pajamas for the first time and we started a new Christmas tradition - opening up a Christmas book each night during December to read before bed.

Each Christmas book was opened with much excitement by Katie Wynn was given to anyone (and everyone) in the room so they could read it to her.

We had a weekend of fantastically warm weather and were able to spend some time hanging out on our patio.

After we left on vacation, Lala and Poppa continued on with the weekday routines and opening one book each night.  I can't wait to re-wrap the books so the kids can open them again next year.

Lala and Poppa left our house a day or two after we returned from Palm Springs, but we got to see them again less than two weeks later when we traveled to their house!  Pics coming soon...

December Birthday Party

I apologize; I am SO behind on blog posts!  I am going to try my best to get caught up in the next couple of days.  Wish me luck.  :)  I took over 500 pictures just in the 24 hours from Christmas Eve dinner to Christmas Day dinner alone, so it may take me a while to sort through everything!  We had an awesome Christmas and I can't wait to show you the pics, but I have a few other posts to get through before we talk about the visit from the man in the red suit.

So now, on December 31st, let's rewind all the way back to November 30th when, like last year, we had a big ol' family birthday party for all the December birthdays.  My sister-in-law Beth, Wyatt, and Beth all have birthdays during the first week of the month, and Anna's falls on Christmas day.  This year, we also added my father-in-law, Bill, to the celebration since he was in town visiting and has a birthday the last week of November.

Since 8 of the party guests were already living at our house, we hosted the party.  It was an unseasonably warm day which worked out great because the kids stayed outside the majority of the time.  Nothing like taking the chaos outside.  :)  We kept dinner simple with a crockpot full of chili, plenty of hotdogs, and the makings for frito chili pies.  Patricia, Matt's mom, made delicious oreo cupcakes for dessert.  We had to drag the kids in from playing outside so they could eat and we could open gifts.

After dinner we worked on some hidden talents.  I taught Bren how to do Monkey lips and Wyatt can touch his nose with his tongue!

These last two pictures are just so we have it on record that Uncle Nick [sorta] got a hug from Katie Wynn.  He was able to win her over by giving her a bandaid for her [nonexistent] boo-boo.

It was a good celebration and a great way to kick off the month of December!

Meet Charlie!

About a month ago, my parents welcomed a new member to the family - a sweet, wire-haired dapple dachshund named Charlie!

Shortly after their older wire-haired dachshund Henry passed away (who we still miss terribly!), my dad couldn't stand the quiet in their home (remember, they'd never been without a dog) and took to the internet to find a new pet.  He knew for sure he wanted another dachshund as it's their favorite breed.  I think Charlie makes the fourth or fifth one they've had?  Plus, my Minnie girl was practically theirs too so add her to the count.  Dad's also a fan of the wire-haired because they're just not as common around here (though they're the most common dachshund in Germany - weird!).  Anyway, after lots of searching, he found a breeder he liked in Florida that had some puppies available and next thing you know, Dad was sending money their way in exchange for Charlie!

Excuse the bad photo - it was rainy and we were outside under a crappy yellow light!

Excuse the bad photo - it was rainy and we were outside under a crappy yellow light!

Charlie was born on the fourth of July and was originally named Omlet (yes, misspelled).  His siblings on the website were Macaroni and Beans.  I wouldn't really have put those three together, would you have?  (Fun fact: Lolli's original name was Popcorn!)  I suggested the name "Indy" - short for Independence to tie in to Charlie's birth date, but Dad overruled.  Whatever, I still think it would've been cute.

Charlie is "dappled" which means he has spots.  His coloring is so funny - his head is completely brown and his body is almost solid white except for a few brown spots on his left side.  Mom says that a small kid must've colored him.  His hair is a little longer than Henry's was but not nearly as curly.  He weighed only 4 pounds the day he arrived.  Speaking of which - he traveled on a plane by himself!  The poor little guy had never even been outside except to go to and from the vet and was just put on a plane by himself to go to a new forever home.  Then he was bombarded with lots of crazy people that wanted to meet and hold him!  I'm sure his anxiety levels were a little high that day.

4.JPG

We left him for the night to get settled in with my parents at his new house, but Thomas and I were back first thing the next morning to see him again!  I think my parents had gotten less sleep than I do with two small kids.  They're back in the newborn stage.  :)

How sweet is this little puppy face??  (And those baby toes?!)

By the second day, Charlie was already following my mom around the house.  Every step she took, he took too (well, times four since he has shorter legs!).  He cries if she even thinks about leaving him in a room by himself.  But as soon as my dad gets home in the evenings, he becomes his little sidekick.  I think he knows exactly which one will spoil him!

The first full week of having Charlie at home, my mom texted me at work one day to say she couldn't find him for a few minutes but finally saw that he had climbed up into the baby swing all by himself!

And now that swing has become his favorite place to hang out!  My mom kept our kids one weekend and this was her audience while she put on her makeup in the morning.  Yes, she moves the swing from room to room so that Charlie can sit wherever she is.

One day I was working over there and needed to set Thomas down for a minute so I put him in the swing.  Charlie looked at me as if I'd lost my mind.  The nerve I had just putting a baby down in his swing.  He climbed in on top of Thomas to let him know who it really belonged to which did not make Thomas happy at all.

I guess Charlie tried to get Thomas back by stealing his BabyBjorn Bouncer seat.  The joke was on him, though, when he got stuck like this!

He did a little bit better the second time he climbed into it, but it still doesn't look very comfortable for a dog!

Lately, the baby boys are getting along much better.  They can often be spotted hanging out on the floor together.

I only have to intervene when Charlie tries to climb on top of Thomas.

But he does a great job of keeping Thomas's hands (and face) clean!

Remember how I said Charlie was Dad's little sidekick?  He gets a little jealous when Dad's attention is on someone else...  (and Thomas has already figured out how to pull puppy hair!)

30.JPG

This is how Dad and Charlie spend their Saturday afternoons.

And Dad is such a pushover that just a few whimpers from Charlie got him a prime seat at the dinner table.

At least Mom is trying to give Charlie some good home training.  She makes him help with the dishes.

Getting to see Charlie is just an added perk to visiting Mimi and Poppy now!

Bren has already taken him on a few trips down the slide!  (I should post the video I took because Charlie's ears flopping the whole way down is pretty funny.)

So far we have all really enjoyed getting to know Charlie and are glad to have him as part of our family.  Though I think we'd like him even more if he could get his overactive bladder under control.  ;)

Fun-Filled Weekend

I think if Katie Wynn were capable of voicing a clear, coherent opinion, she'd say, "That was the best weekend ever!!"  We had a weekend full of events that kept our little toddler busy and excited.  I kept my camera and phone close so I can recap it all in photos.

Friday

My mom had my niece Bren with her on Friday so we planned a picnic at a local park on the river.  We found a big shade tree to spread our blanket out under and had a basket and cooler full of sandwiches and junk food!  Our picnicking neighbors had a kite which kept Katie Wynn mesmerized.  We had a slight breeze which kept the weather pretty perfect.  After filling up on a bottle, Thomas thought it was pretty much the best napping environment ever.

Isn't Bren just the prettiest little girl?  Her bright blue eyes and freckled nose just kill me!

Mimi let the girls use her as a jungle gym all while she kept Thomas calm too.  She really is the best Mimi.

After I got out the baby wipes to clean up a spill, the girls decided that Mimi need a baby wipe bath from head to toe!  So much for putting on makeup, Mom...

Ol' Mr. Blue Eyes.  I can't remember at what age Katie Wynn's eyes changed from blue to hazel, but I kinda hope he keeps his baby blues!

He thought Bren was pretty stinkin' funny!

The sun started creeping onto our blanket so it was time to wrap up our fun little picnic.  But we weren't headed home just yet!  Instead, we made a pit stop at the splash pad for some water fun.

I ended up having to get way more involved than I bargained for since my timid girl wouldn't run through the water without me.  I got just as wet as they did!  Mom hung out with Thomas and tried to take pictures as we ran by.

As expected, Katie Wynn didn't even make it all the way home before falling asleep.  After a good long nap at home, we ended up over at my parents' house for a cookout that evening.  Poppy got to log some time on the playground with his granddaughters.

I didn't really take any other pictures since it was a little chaotic (who am I kidding, it's always chaotic), but we had a good time.  We left with our bellies full and got the best night's sleep in a long, long time!  Our lights were out before 10 and the first noise we heard was at 6:13 when Thomas woke up.  A glorious full 8 hours of sleep!

Saturday

Matt hit the golf course early Saturday morning so it was just me and the kiddos.  I couldn't resist snapping some pictures of Katie Wynn in her room because I thought she looked so darn cute!

She played on the floor with Baby Doll while I worked on laundry.  I was afraid she was gonna fall asleep before it was time for our outing!

Speaking of our outing, we went swimming!  My aunt and uncle graciously invited us over to their pool since my parents had Jett and Bren for the weekend.  We all donned our swimsuits and took them up on their offer.  This was Katie Wynn's first time to use a puddle jumper and she loved it.  She jumped in the pool over and over and over again!

Of course, since Bren was jumping in the water to Matt, that meant Bren had to too.  He would try to see how far out he could make her go.

Any time Matt needed a break he'd just head to the deep end.  He knew they wouldn't follow him there!  Every time he jumped in and went under water, Katie Wynn would throw her hands up and say, "Where he go?"

Just like the day before, three hours in the water meant we got another awesome afternoon nap out of Katie Wynn.  It's a good thing, too, because there was still more fun to be had!  My parents had a party to go to so Jett and Bren came to our house to hang out.  We decided to go to a local diner for burgers and shakes for dinner.  Yum!

When we got home, Bren and Katie Wynn took a bubble bath together.  Isn't it funny how big kids always really get into playing with little kids' toys?  Bren played with every bath toy we have while Katie Wynn just splished and splashed.

After the bath, they played with Katie Wynn's dolls until it was time for her to go to bed.  I'm sure she was exhausted from all the weekend's activities but, unbeknownst to her, there was still one more surprise coming on Sunday!

Sunday

Thomas didn't make it quite as long Sunday morning as he had the morning before, so I was up early to feed him.  Thankfully he went right back to sleep so I could crawl back into bed for some more Zzzzzs.  Matt got up with Katie Wynn and they made a trip to the donut shop!  When I got up, I snuggled with my little girl on the couch while watching Frozen for the first time ever!!  We only made it through half of the movie but I can tell it's a good one.  No wonder it's all you ever hear about these days.  I was impressed that Katie Wynn sat through as much of it as she did (we never really watch tv at home).  She would get distracted during the talking scenes but was glued to the screen during any song.  (I think this may be because they listen to the soundtrack at daycare so she knows the songs already.)

Sunday morning was the first time I was able to put Katie Wynn and Thomas in matching outfits for church so of course we had to take pictures.  I've had several matching outfits for them for a while but Thomas is just now getting big enough to fit into his.  You can't imagine how exciting this is for this Southern mama.  Let the fun begin!

"Yesss!" I hope this isn't foreshadowing to Thomas's teen years any time he gets kissed by a cute girl.

We put Katie Wynn down for an early nap so that I could wake her up when her surprise arrived.

And her surprise was.....GUS!!  Our friends Sarah and Charlie and their son, Gus, came over for a visit and to meet Thomas.  K-dub always has so much fun with Gus so I knew she'd be excited to see him!

We stripped the kids down for a little watermelon action.  I didn't even know if KW would like it (I don't - bluh! - so I never buy them).  The jury's still out because she never really took a bite, but she loved holding it!

It's funny to me how they assumed their typical gender roles.  Katie Wynn sat with her legs crossed while Gus spread out.  Gus dove right into his watermelon and let it drip down his belly while KW didn't want to make a mess.  Typical male and female.  :)

The best way to clean off sticky watermelon is by jumping in the pool!  And don't worry with a swimsuit - aint' nobody got time for that.

And then it just got even better when I brought out popsicles!  I love the bubbles in this picture...

I know what you're thinking - "Surely the weekend fun's gotta stop there, right?"

Nope!  A couple hours after our friends left, Katie Wynn and I stopped by my brother's house to drop off some stuff and, after getting to pet two kitty cats, she got to ride on the four wheeler!

All good things eventually come to an end, and that's what happened with Katie Wynn's Best Weekend Ever.  We ended it with several loads of laundry and, as you can see, Katie bug was as excited about that as I was.

I'm not sure if next weekend will be able to keep up with all the fun we had this past one.  We've already got a couple things on the docket though so who knows?  Maybe it will be!
