Mother's Day

[By Doc] So, I know that Lucy has thousands of readers, but this post is for 2 special ladies.  Lucy and I are blessed to have two incredible women in our lives - Marcia & Patricia, our moms.

I wanted to take just a minute to list a few words or phrases that make me think of either or both of these women.  Special moments between me and each/both of them.  Mom and Marcia - I love you both, and this is what I think of when I think of you...

Mudder & Gutter

"Peaches"

Vegetable Beef Soup

Tears of Joy and Tears of Pride

A hug that makes everything better

An open offer to take ALL of the leftovers

Patience, otherworldy patience

An inability to carry a tune when singing (sorry, I have to be honest)

A role model for my faith

A role model for my daughter

An uncanny ability to always have that random thing that I need buried in some drawer (button, pencil, 47 cents, etc)

Praise for a meal that I have prepared (whether it was good or not - but let's face it, it is usually good)

An honest, thankful appreciation for the morning sunrise

A tearful, respectful twinkle in your eye when you recall stories about your mother

An unashamed love for your grandchildren

Fruit Salad

Watering the flowers

Working harder than you should for less money than you deserve

"I'm hot"/"I'm burning up"

A cold glass of tea - sweet in the South, un-sweetened up North

Pulling together a great family meal with tons of comfort foods

Remembering and compensating for my "white" food issues...

Willingness to pick me up from or take me to the airport at some ungodly hour

The smile I get when I walk through the door....

Mom & Marcia, I hope you both had a great day!  My day was great because of you!

Ben's Birthday Party

Clever blog title, right?  Obviously, I'm going to write about my brother Ben's birthday party.  It was at my house...on the same day as the 27 Dresses bridal shower.  I've decided that any time I clean my house for an occasion, I might as well have everyone I know over that day.  Clean once, entertain all day.  That's how I roll. The last guest from the shower had only been out the door about thirty minutes before my first family member arrived.  Ben's birthday was Sunday and it was a big one for him...the big 3-0.  He was pretty excited - can't you tell?

I cannot pay my brother to smile for the camera.  He just won't do it.  Sigh...

We celebrated his birthday with a few more glasses of the flowers-in-champagne.  I had to make a virgin version with sprite since there's a baby in Erin's belly.

Parker has decided his baby brother or sister will be named Target.  That must be his favorite store.

The guys stood outside and manned the grill.  Look, three smiles!  It's a miracle!

I told them to smile one more time so I could use my flash.  I must've pressed my luck.

Me and my sweet daddy.

Bren sat inside and did what she does best - eat.  The birthday boy stopped eating chips and dip after he saw her licking the dip off her chip and sticking it back in.

I complimented Jettbo on his new haircut.

I asked him if he liked my haircut.  He scrunched up his nose and said, "You look different.  You look like somebody"  And then, as if it just came to him, he said, "You look like a beautiful princess!"  And that, my friends, is when I officially decided I like my haircut.

Every family gathering I try to get a good picture of Bren and her mommy.  I haven't gotten the perfect picture yet, but I will keep trying.  I'm determined to get a shot of them both looking in the same direction and smiling.

Every year my brother requests my mom's Strawberry Pizza for his birthday cake.  It's layers and layers of yummy goodness.

See those matches in the foreground of the picture above?  They were my makeshift candles.  Poor Ben only got one match to blow out.

And that's when I stopped taking pictures.  Good job, Lucy.  Let me assure you that there was lots of birthday singing, cake eating, and present opening.  I just didn't feel the need to document any of that, apparently.

Happy birthday, Ben!  Hope it was great.  Let me know how the thirties are, will ya?

Hippity, Hoppity, Easter Happened

Easter was on its way, then it happened, and now I'm just getting around to posting about it.  Oops.  I'm just now looking through my pictures and I'm going to blog as I go, so forgive me if this is all over the place.  Easter Sunday started with a church service that the whole family attended.  We took up the entire pew!  (My mom kept her spot at the piano bench.)  The sanctuary was packed full of people and Easter lillies.  We enjoyed a good service celebrating the resurrection of our savior.

After church my mom invited us all over for lunch and an Easter egg hunt.  While she was finishing preparing the food, I took my camera and tripod outside to try to find a setup for some good pictures.  I asked Bren to be my model as I tweaked my camera settings.  I told her to stand in front of the green bushes and give me a smile.

And well, obviously that didn't work.  "Hey Bren, show me your pretty purse!"

This is the purse she carries with her EVERYWHERE.  I think she may also sleep with it.  So now she's working with me, but I need a smile.  "Hey Brennie, did the Easter Bunny come see you?  What'd he bring?"

And bam!  Got my smile!

But suddenly felt like I was taking inappropriate pictures.  Allow me to explain:  the Easter Bunny brought Bren some new Dora undies.  I thought maybe she'd look at the camera and tell me about them.  Instead, that girl popped a hip and showed 'em to me!

Luckily, another  model wandered over so we could quit with the nudie pics.  Parker brought his own prop with him too.

He was full of smiles but kept hiding that cute face of his behind his telescope!

Then I got another idea.  "Hey Jett, come help me.  Stand by the babies and take a picture with them!"

First, we've gotta get the stick away from Parker.

Hey wait a minute, he picked up two more!

Apparently Jett decided that if you can't beat 'em, join 'em.

So much for that help.  And where's Bren?

Oh there she is.  She's found something better to do.  Great.

"Hey Doc, can you help me out here?  I'm trying to get a picture of the kids in their Easter clothes."

"Everyone look over here!"  (Parker ran off.)

"Smile, Brennie!"

"Ok, forget it.  I give up.  Let's just take one of ourselves."

I hate kissy photos and now I've gone and posted two within the last week.  First I was kissin' all over Lolli, and now my husband.  What's gotten into me?

I gave up on the photo shoot after that.  I couldn't get a good shot of anyone.  Besides, lunch was ready and I was starving!

I gobbled up my food as quickly as possible so that I could be ready for the best party of the day - the egg hunt!  I LOVE Easter egg hunts.  I really don't understand why they don't have these for big kids like me.  But, since I can't hunt for them, I'm happy to be the Head Egg Hider.  My mom gave me a bag of 80 eggs filled with candy, stickers, and money and I was out the door.  I decided to hide them on the patio and the playground area.

A lot of them were in plain sight for the little kids, but I did hide some a little harder for Jett.  Pepaw helped point an egg out to Bren.

A few eggs were up high where only Jett could reach them.

When it came time to count the eggs at the end (not to pick winners, just to make sure we'd found them all), my little bunny dog helped empty the baskets.

As much as I love the Easter Egg Hunt, the confetti eggs are pretty high up there too.  Just like last year, I picked up some real egg shells filled with colorful confetti to crack on the kids' heads.

Somehow Beth was the only grown-up that got confetti-ed.  I think that may have been my fault.

Aren't these eggs great?  Why don't we have confetti every Sunday afternoon?

Our friend Mady from next door heard all of our excitement and came over to join in the fun.  She probably didn't know she was about to get an egg smashed on her head.

I tried for a pic of my brother's family but still couldn't seem to get Parker's attention.

I couldn't get Bren's either.  They just aren't interested in my camera.

Beth's sister Shea joined us for the Easter festivities.  We think of her as family too.

Mady helped Jett go through all his eggs and find his goodies.

About ten minutes after all the confetti excitement I realized that Bren still had her egg full of confetti and was throwing herself a little party.  She pulled the confetti out piece by piece and added it to the collection already on her head.

I watched her do this over and over until finally, she reached in...

...and realized it was all gone.

But she gave it one last good shake over her head, just in case.

It was all gone!

Parker concentrated hard on unwrapping a chocolate egg.

I snapped this picture of all the grown men together.  Can you tell which one is not blood-related?

That would be Doc, the only one that knows how to smile for the camera.

The little kids roped Memaw into opening every egg and every piece of candy for them.

And with every piece of candy and money that was dropped, guess who was there to help find it in the grass?

My sweet fur baby, Lolli.

That summed up our Easter activities for the day, but just as we were all loading up our cars and getting ready to head home, we got one more surprise.  My parents had already been watching this bird nest for several days...

...but it was Beth that noticed a little chirping head sticking out.  We all raced upstairs to take a look.  Baby Easter birds!

What a great end to the day!  Since the nest resides on the windowsill to my bedroom at their house, I'm claiming the birds as my own.  I've called my mom after each  major storm and tornado to make sure the birdies are ok, and I'm happy to report that they're still safe in their nest.

Hope your Easter was every bit as good as ours was!

Last Weekend

I was just uploading some pictures from my camera and realized I never posted any from this past weekend with the kids.  I didn't take many because we really didn't do much...just a typical weekend. Friday night we ate at home.  Wyatt asked if he could prepare an appetizer for us so Doc let him.  We each (minus Anna, who doesn't like fruit) got a creatively cut strawberry.

I was actually pretty impressed with his design, but I think next time he needs to figure out how to do it with more than one strawberry!

After dinner the boys headed upstairs to play wii.  Anna brought down a kit she got for Christmas and was finally ready to take a look at it.  It's a kit for her to make her own needlepoint bracelets (at least I think it's needlepoint).  I was thrilled because this is the exact kind of thing I loved to do when I was her age.  I happily helped her get started.

It took her a few minutes to figure out which way to pull the thread through, but once she got the hang of it she was smooth sailing.

She didn't get the bracelet completely finished (she likes to take breaks) and it's all I can do not to go upstairs and finish it for her.  My ten-year-old self really wants to go get her kit and make my own!

Saturday morning was pretty low-key.  We took a long walk to a park and spent the morning playing.  Doc has recently joined a tennis league and had his first game on Saturday.  Since I had a bridal shower to attend, the kids went with him to cheer him on.  I can't wait to go watch him myself!

Sunday after church we stopped by my parents' house and ended up staying for pizza.  I had my camera with me and took this picture of Anna.

I really liked the lighting in the picture so I told her to go grab her brother so I could try to get a good one of them together.

I think the picture of them together turned out well but Doc doesn't like it.  He says they look like they're 18 and 19 years old.  While I don't think they look quite THAT old yet, I do agree that they're definitely growing up.

As if reading our minds, right after that picture was taken Anna jumped on her pogo stick to remind us that she's still just ten.  Phew!

That was about the extent of our weekend.  The kids had to go home early on Sunday so Doc and I spent the afternoon working in the yard.  We got a lot of work done, which is good, except that Monday morning my body hurt all over!  I guess I'm not in summer-yard-work shape quite yet.

Spring Has Sprung!

Hooray for spring finally being here!  We enjoyed the beautiful weather this weekend and spent as much time outside as possible.  Let's hope this nice weather is here to stay for awhile. I'm going to warn you now that this post may be all over the place.  I'm flipping through our recent pictures, so who knows where this will end up.

The kids had their spring break last week, and since Doc was able to take a few days off work, we were able to keep them for a few days.  First order of business?  Building a fort in the living room.

Wyatt organized a basketball game that was scheduled to be played at 5:00 the following day (giving me enough time to get home and change clothes).  Anna and Wyatt were chosen as team captains and got to draw their teammate out of a cap.  Our teams ended up being Girls vs Boys.  We also had to draw from the cap to get our team name.

Anna and I were the Fighting Geezers and drew red and blue as our team colors.  I thought the excitement over the match-up might die down while I was at work, but I was wrong.  As soon as I walked in the door, everyone was waiting on me to change clothes.  Wyatt had made signs for everyone's uniforms and a scoreboard.  Doc's iPhone was the official timekeeper.  But before we could play, team photos had to be taken.

The Fighting Geezers, in red and blue:

The Wild Chickens, that were supposed to be in black and white:

It was an intense game.  We played two 10-minute halves and in the end, the Wild Chickens ended up beating the Fighting Geezers by around 5 or so points.  I thought Anna and I did pretty good, though, considering we don't play basketball nearly as often as our opponents do.

After the game we took a walk to the park.  Anna enjoyed posing with Lolli on the playground.

Lolli wasn't so sure about hanging out in the fort part of the playset...

...so Anna helped her find a way down.

I love it when the spring flowers start showing up everywhere.  I am especially enjoying these flowering trees in our neighborhood.

This picture is a few days old, but I still like it.  Lolli and Henry have decided they'll be friends.  Thank goodness, since they get to spend a lot of time together.  I caught them napping side by side at my mom's house.  Of course, Lolli had to look up when I took the picture.

Henry had a bit of a scare this weekend.  My mom texted me Saturday morning around 8 and told me he was missing.  He had been out since 6:30 and I guess when she realized she didn't hear him barking like normal, she and my dad went out looking for him.  He was nowhere to be found in the backyard.  My dad was supposed to be meeting Doc at the golf course, but since they couldn't find Henry, Doc went to their house to join in the hunt.  I think they all walked the neighborhood calling his name, but he never came running.  Finally, when my dad and Doc were driving the street behind my parents' house, Doc spotted him in the corner of someone's backyard.  Doc said he was so frozen he looked like a stuffed animal.  My dad jumped the fence and even as he approached him, Henry wouldn't move.  He never barked.  He had one leg tucked up underneath him - Doc thought he was missing a leg at first.  He was pretty glazed over, but they inspected him and didn't find any blood or bruises.  When he got back home he relaxed and has since returned to his normal self.  There has been a huge owl hanging out in the neighborhood.  My dad has seen it himself on a couple of occasions and several cats have turned up missing.  Could the owl have helped Henry over the fence and to the neighbor's house?  Who knows?  All we know is that something happened to poor Henry that frightened everything out of him.

Once we were all satisfied that Henry was ok and would fully recover, my mom and I headed out on a shopping spree.  We were in the mood to find some junk pieces to fix up and headed out looking for some yardsales.  Unfortunately, we only found one and it didn't have any furniture.  So we headed to some junky antique stores.  I like looking at organized antiques, but I'm not sure that I'm cut out for the junky stores.  They were way too gross and creepy for me - I think I pretty much ran out of one when I saw a huge hole in the ceiling.  I think I was terrified something might crawl out of that hole and I didn't want to stick around to see it.

We didn't have any luck with the yard sales and antique stores, but we randomly stopped at a Going-Out-Of-Business Sale at a local furniture store, and it's safe to say we found our luck!  Two U-Haul trucks full of luck, to be exact.  This store is closing in 3 weeks and everything had to go!  (Is it just me or all furniture stores always going out of business?  "Everything must go!")  We took a few things off their hands - a couple couches, coffee table, end tables, tv stand, and 4 mattress sets.  It was a crazy, spontaneous move on our part but we felt like we just couldn't pass up on the deals!  I'll let you in on our plans for this new stuff soon.

We left the furniture store without a clue as to how we planned on getting all home.  No one in my family owns a truck.  I called Doc to figure out his whereabouts (he had been out playing tennis), and it turns out that he was pretty close to a U-Haul store.  He rented a truck and headed over to the store to get all of our goodies.  Unfortunately, they only had a small truck available for him and there was no way everything would fit into it.  The distance from the furniture store and my parents' house (where we decided to take our new items) was just under 2 hours round trip.  So that's how we ended up spending our Saturday night - the crazy decision that mom and I made that afternoon didn't put Doc and me at home until around 8:30 that night, and we were exhausted!

Since the weather was so nice yesterday afternoon, I decided to rinse out our kitchen rugs.  Doc looked at me like I was crazy but I reminded him that I was the one there when Minnie got sick all over them on her last day.  Even though I have scrubbed them like crazy, I still felt like it couldn't hurt to give them a good rinse.  So that's how we ended up with this in our side yard:

Doc helped me get them up on the ladder and also came up with this idea to give them a good cleaning:

Don't worry, we poured the last of the windex out and filled it back up with regular soapy water.  It was awesome!  Who knew pressure washing some rugs could be so much fun?  Unfortunately, they are still dripping wet.  By the time I had them both done, all of the sunny spots in our teeny yard were gone.  But they'll dry eventually and then they'll (hopefully) feel like brand new rugs!  Until then, we'll just keep cooking in our bare and echo-y kitchen.

I told you this post was going to be all over the place.  From basketball to dogs to U-Hauls to rugs.  Between all of that I completed a fun craft project.  I'm working on a post to show you all the details next.
