I love life on the farm.

Doc and I just got back from an amazing long weekend on a farm.  We were lucky to be invited by our friends Chris and Allison to go with them to Allison's folks' farm.  It was SUCH a great weekend, and I have approximately 687 pictures to prove it.  I am slowly sorting through all of them and trying to figure out how to categorize everything.  Prepare yourself for several farm-related posts this week! Meet Jack and Jan.

It's their farm that we went to and, like Chris and Allison, they are good, good people.  They were so gracious to invite us into their home for the weekend. Well, sorta. We didn't actually get to sleep in the same house as they did...

Maybe we should start with a tour of the property so you can see why we didn't sleep in their house.

[Before we start, I should warn you that a lot of my pictures are blurry. I'm a little mad at my camera(s) about this. But, it's probably because I'm not a very good photographer. In fact, I think I'm getting worse.]

The farm is lined with all kinds of different fences to keep the animals in, and all the fences were built and put up by their 3 farm hands. My favorite fence was this black fence that ran along the roads.

With lots of fences comes lots of gates.  Not just anyone can make it up to the farm house, first you have to be buzzed in through the main gate.

To the right of the drive is the newly planted orchard.

And just past the orchard you can see the big farmhouse! (Oops, this picture was actually taken while I was still outside the gate.)

When we walked up to the front door, we were greeted by a stone fountain

and a BEAUTIFUL fall display.

Now, moving inside. I don't have pictures of the entire inside of the house, but I still have quite a few. You'll have to use your imagination for the rest.

From the front door, you enter into the living room.

And just past the living room is a small sitting area with tv.  In case you can't tell from the pic, those would be the Hogs that are playing.  Woo Pig Sooie!!

Also in this big open room is the dining table.  The whole wall behind the table and the tv area are really big windows that overlook the property.

I loved the long wooden candle holder that sat on the table.

Here you can see the big windows.

Just behind the living room is the kitchen.

Let's spend a few minutes talking about how seriously, completely, ridiculously awesome this kitchen is.

As you can see in the picture above, it's bordered by two pine(ish?) trees. These trees are awesome. They have split naturally since they were built into the house, creating very cool cracks.

Here's one tree post:

The other one has a really big split in it, and I think the shiny spots in it could be tree sap. Maybe?

Ok, now let's go back to the super awesome kitchen.   Check out this breakdown of its awesomeness (you may have to hunt for the letters - click the picture to make it bigger).

A - farm style sink B - island sink C - dishwasher D - two dishwasher drawers (on side of island) E - trash compactor F - oven G - stove top H - another stove top I - steamer (back of island) J - pizza oven K - pantry L - refrigerator M - pot filler (it's the silver spout on that white tile wall) Not labeled - wine fridge (on island across from pantry) Not pictured - another oven and microwave (on wall to the left of the bar)

I know, right? Even I would be up for learning how to cook if that's the kitchen I got to do it in everyday.

Wine fridge side of island:

Dishwasher drawer side of island: (The two dishwashers were Jack's doing. As he said, if you have two, you'll never have dirty dishes sitting around. I can get behind that.)

Wood storage for the pizza oven:

Awesome farm style sink:

And the microwave and oven that weren't pictured above:

In this kitchen, even the pantry is cool.  It starts like this:

Then, you open the doors to this:

And then, you can swing open those shelves to even more shelving!

I would kind of like a closet like that for my shoes.

So, phew! That's the kitchen.  Also on the main floor is the master suite - huge bedroom, his and her bathrooms joined by the tub and shower, a workout room, and a closet that's as big as our playroom, at least. It even has a window bed in it (similar to a window seat, but bed size). And from the workout room, you can go down into the tornado shelter basement that will soon be turned into Jack's wine cellar.

Upstairs is where Chris and Allison stayed.

Not pictured is their bathroom, which is so big it used to be the guest bedroom and had two twin beds in it. Yep.

From their room, you can go to the enormous game room.

On the very back wall is the big tv that was delivered while we were there.

And if you turn and look back from there, you can see the pool table that was also delivered while we were there.

So that's the jist of the main house.  From there, you can walk past the outdoor fireplace,

and head to Jan and Jack's offices.

If you head up these stairs, you'll see why Doc and I did not stay in the same house as everyone else.

We had our own little apartment above the offices!

I was obsessed with this artwork.  The paintings are done on tar paper and then glued onto wooden canvases.  Who's going to make me some?

Another sitting area:

Our super comfy bed:

Across from our bed was a little kitchenette, complete with, yep, another dishwasher.

And the tv and microwave were hidden in those cabinets:

So that's where we stayed. Here's a picture of the front of the house so you can try to put it all together.

And a pic from the back:

Now, let's see what else is on the property. Outside of the house is the small barn, home of the alpacas.

(Doc and I are not alpacas. We're just posing in front of the barn.)

This is the big barn that's not near the house.  In it is the Farm Manager's office and another bedroom and full bath.

It also houses big tractor-like things. Every boy's dream.

Did you know these big tires are filled with water instead of air? I sure didn't.

On the property is also Jake's house. He's the Assistant Farm Manager and the only person that lives on the farm all the time.

Outside his house are these two buildings - they were already there when Jack and Jan bought the property.

The little silver-ish building is cool - it's where they weigh all the cows.  They herd all the cows through these runs

and then, one by one, they step on the electronic scale.  This is probably the only time when the bigger the number on the scale, the better.

Holy cow! It's 9:24.  I started this post at 7!! It's the longest post ever, and all I've done is show you the farm. There are still a ton of pictures of what we actually did while we're there. Yeesh.

Come back soon to see pictures of alpacas and Sheryl Crow and other fun things!

Viking Cooking School

As I mentioned earlier, Saturday night of the bachelorette weekend was reserved for a cooking class at the Viking Cooking School.  A lot of my friends are already good cooks, but I told myself I needed to pay close attention to what the teacher taught us.  Doc had already told me he would want to see what I learned. The pressure was on! We started with appetizers that were already prepared and went through introductions. We also had a few minutes to look over the night's menu.

The favor for the weekend was an apron for each girl. Jenny's was different since she was the bride. We rocked those aprons during the whole class, and looked pretty good in them, too, if I do say so myself.

The island in the ginormous kitchen was already set up with all of our supplies. At each place was a cutting board, a towel, and a big-girl knife.

The class had 12 students and we divided up into 3 cooking teams. My team, Team 3, rocked! But I might be biased.

Our biggest competition were our other friends over on Team 2. They also had Nadia on their team. She was with the film crew, of course, and her job (with the film) is to make sure all the dialect and accents are correct. I guess we'll see how good she is at her job when the movie comes out. Either way, she was fun in the kitchen!

And on the other side of the cooking area was Team 1, made up of two couples from the same town in MS but that met for the first time that night. And we found out that Penny, in blue, is one of our sorority sisters!

We got a little competitive and cheered our teams on. We may have been their loudest group yet.

First up was an avocado salsa to go with the crabcakes. We learned the proper way to hold the knife to chop things (not the way I do it) and how to seed tomatoes.

We followed the directions to see what was next: crabcakes.

In this class, it's A-ok if you take a wine break. In fact, it's encouraged.

While we mixed the ingredients for the crabcakes, our beef just set there and...bled.

This is our instructor, Mary Helen. She stopped us before we screwed anything up, and showed us how to do things when we needed help.

Darbie was my team's seasoner. She went to town with the salt and pepper and flavored our meat right up.

To cook the meat, we seared it in a pan for two minutes on each side, and then let it finish cooking in the oven. Allison was in charge of cooking ours, and she did a great job!

While we were carefully timing our sides, I looked over and saw Team 2 doing a little dancing.

They may have lacked the kind of focus and dedication our team had. In fact, by the time they finished their dance, Allison already had our meat ready to go in the oven.

The menu called for Champagne Aioli to be served with the shrimp, and I got to be the assistant that made that for everyone.

Mary Helen had to show me how to use the garlic press, but after that I was doing great and feeling pretty proud of myself!

And then she handed me a bowl of olive oil and told me to pour in about 6 tablespoons.  Uh, what? Can I get a measuring spoon?

My teammates chopped up some ingredients for my aioli.

It wasn't long before that part was done. And I think the Champagne Aioli was one of my favorite parts of the meal. Seriously. Not just because I made it.

While I divided it up, the teams started working on the salad dressing. Sarah's a good whisker.

After the salad dressing, it was time to cook the crabcakes. Jenny and I happily turned this job over to Allison and Darbie on our team. We're really good at watching.

They used this round thingy to shape the cakes. (Obviously I didn't pay close enough attention like I was supposed to because I'm pretty sure "round thingy" is not the technical term I'm looking for here.)

Next up, we got to throw our battered butterfly shrimp in the fryer. (We battered these assembly-line style. You better believe there was some rootin' and cheerin' going on then. Team 3 finished first. Oh yea!)

And finally, FINALLY, it was time to start plating all of our food. We started with the salads - spinach leaves, walnuts, blue cheese, prosciutto, and cherries.

Random side note: see the counter tops in the picture above? It's the same as the counter tops in our kitchen! The Viking Cooking School has good taste.

And then we plated everything else: fried shrimp with the aioli sauce, crabcakes and avocado salsa, and the beef tenderloin.

It was so good that I forgot to take a picture of my plate before digging in. I just couldn't resist!  We all sat around the table and enjoyed our homemade meal with our new friends.

We didn't make our own desserts - creme brulee - but we did get to torch them. (And isn't that the fun part of having creme brulee, anyway?)

After finishing dinner, we forced our head chef to take a picture with us.

It was so, so much fun! I definitely want to go back, the only questions is, who's going to go with me?

And I think it's always a good sign on bachelorette weekends when the bride-to-be is the first to konk out.

And that wraps up a great weekend!

Greenwood, MS

This post could also be titled The Best Girls' Weekend Ever. My friend Jenny is getting married in two months so this past weekend, we headed South to celebrate. As her maid of honor, I arrived early (along with Darbie and Allison) to set up and get ready for the other girls to arrive.

The color scheme was the same as their upcoming wedding: purple and green. We didn't have long so we quickly taped up streamers,

put out plates and plastic wine glasses,

and arranged the cupcakes.

Darbie brought with her a bouquet of coordinating flowers,

and she made a delicious appetizer for us to start the night with.

Just as we set the tray of food out, the bride-to-be walked in. Perfect timing!

After unpacking our things, munching on snacks, and catching up, we decided we were hongry. We hopped on the shuttle bus from the hotel and set out to find somewhere to eat.

Along the way, we found this night club where the grown folks play and considered stopping, but decided food was more important. Maybe next time.

It wasn't long before we were at Lusco's, a local restaurant,

and this fine gentleman helped us off the van.

We knew this place had to be good because the waiting area was packed. We were there, obviously,

but so were all of these guys:

Our wait wasn't long and we, thankfully, got to leave the wildlife behind when we were seated. The table setup was actually pretty cool. We were at a table that was in its own little cubby and a curtain we could close for privacy.  We even had a doorbell we could ring if we needed our waiter.

We headed back to the hotel stuffed and ready to play some bachelorette games. It was only natural that we had pink drinks, too!

The next morning we woke up early to take advantage of the awesome buffet at the hotel, and then headed to the ah-mazing spa to get pampered.  It was one of the most fun spa experiences I've had. The facial was great and exactly what I had been looking forward to. Usually when I have any kind of spa treatment, I hit the road as soon as it's over. But when all your girlfriends are there, it's so much fun to hang out in the locker room and take advantage of all the free amenities!

The spa treatments gave us all a nice little glow!

After getting cleaned  up, we headed to the Delta Bistro for some lunch, and a delicious lunch it was.

We spent the afternoon touring the sleepy little town and roaming in and out of boutiques, bookstores, and antique shops.

I found these little painted blocks outside of an art store. I really wanted them to be mine but they wouldn't fit in my purse...

Want to know the coolest thing about Greenwood, MS right now? They're filming The Help there! The town was chock-full of people with the movie. In fact, we ate dinner with the author of the book, Kathryn Stockett (Kitty, to her friends), on Friday night. Well, we were at the same restaurant anyway.  It became the norm for everyone we ran into to say they were with the film crew. I tried to make my hair extra big as we walked around so I might look a little 1960s-ish and get asked to be an extra.  It didn't work.

There was a book signing while we were in town, but we didn't go.

It was held at this really cool bookstore that had recently been renovated.

Oh, and while we were in an antique shop, we found out that this chandelier will be in the movie. You saw it here first, folks!

Window shopping wore us out so we headed back to get a little rest and to watch our favorite show - Sex and The City. Darbie was smart and brought the boxed set. We ordered a DVD player from the front desk, which ended up having a short in one of the wires. Didn't stop us! We rigged that thing up and had it working in no time!

The next picture is one of my favorites from the weekend. Allison had been battling a cough and so Susan, the speech therapist in the group, asked to take a look at her throat. When she did, Susan actually discovered that Allison has a bifurcated uvula. That's the fancy way of saying her hangy ball has a bit of a butt crack.  And of course, we all had to see it. It was a little difficult getting enough light to see, so we got smart and started using the flash from a camera. So, this is what it looks like when one of your friends is taking pictures of another friend's uvula.

(Sorry, Allison! Please don't hate me. This is too good not to share.)

Awesome, right?

The big activity of the weekend took place Saturday night. We attended a cooking class at the Viking Cooking School and because it was SO much fun and because I took SO many pictures, it's going to get a post of its own. Check back soon!

Shenanigans

Our beach trip is coming to an end, as Doc and I are headed home tomorrow. I won't bore you with all 9,422 pictures that I took, but I will share some of them with you. We've had a really good week and I'm dreading returning to reality next week. Where to start? I apologize in advance if this post is scattered and all over the place. I'm posting pictures as I go through them.

So, there was a little bit of male modeling on the beach.

We had to walk up and down these stairs all week. Ugh. That definitely counted as our workout everyday.

We got a good bit of sun and we have tan lines to prove it. These show how we're bound together forever.

As I mentioned earlier, we headed to Rosemary one night and wandered around. It's such a cute little town. Outside one restaurant I found this awesome riddling rack. I'm thinking I could probably make one of these...

Also in Rosemary we found a children's toy store to play in. Do you remember Cuba Gooding Jr. in Men of Honor?  A few minutes after being in the store, that's who Antonio turned into.

And Cliff turned into a parrot.

Here's the the only shot of the whole gang.

In my opinion, you have to love a town that has brick streets and hanging strings of lights.

My husband is, and probably always will be, a kid at heart.

Rosemary is so awesome, it swept the guys off their feet! Har.

We stopped for drinks at a mexican restaurant and we were entertained by some balancing acts.

I won't lie. I really wanted to steal that cute little pot of paper flowers.

Last night, the boys decided to grill out hamburgers for us. I walked outside to check on them and the first thing I saw was this:

Um, hello? Guys? Is anybody watching the grill? Cause things are looking a little smokey...

I rounded the corner and found the boys camped out in the parking lot.

Luckily, they knew what they were doing because the burgers turned out to be pretty darn tasty, if I do say so myself.

This picture is very dark and hard to see, but it's of Matt walking up behind Mary Elizabeth on the beach and slipping a necklace around her neck for their anniversary. So sweet!

And the necklace is beautiful! It has the birthstone of their daughter, Wesley.

The guys quickly turned into little boys for some beach wrestling.

They were pretty hot and sweaty by the time we left the beach, so they may or may not have taken a quick dip in the pool in their underwear. I'll leave you in suspense on that one.

Time check: 12:18.  That's pretty late for this very sleepy girl so I'm signing off. Goodnight!

Protective Eyewear

It's pretty common knowledge that when you're outside on a bright, sunny day, you should wear sunglasses. They're good for keeping you from squinting when the sun's too bright, but they also protect your eyes from the ultraviolet rays and blue light. So, it's safe to say that when you're getting ready to spend a week at the beach, you should probably pack at least one pair of shades.

These are a good example of the kind of sunglasses you would not want to pack, unless you only have one eye.

That's my friend Matt up there, and I gave him a hard time about those one-eyed shades.

The other day we ventured out to Rosemary and did a little window shopping. Since NB doesn't like my favorite sunglasses, I decided to look for some new ones.

These were my favorites right off the bat.

I also thought these could be cool to have anytime it was someone's birthday.

One downside of wearing sunglasses for long periods of time, for me at least, is that my ears start to hurt. But I have a feeling that wouldn't be a problem if I had some that velcroed on like these!

Trying on sunglasses was fun but in the end, I walked away empty-handed. I am kinda sad that I didn't buy the batman ones. But since I already have 3 or 4 pairs in regular rotation, I couldn't justify buying another pair.

Fast-forward to earlier today when I dropped my sunglasses on the pavement before hopping in the car. This is what I get for making fun of Matt's one-eyed sunglasses.

Karma is a you-know-what.
