Before and After: Jett's Room

My nephew, Jett, is 6 years old and obsessed with all things army.  He reads about wars and loves to play with his plastic army men and was even an "army guy" for Halloween.  So for Christmas, his surprise gift from his mom and dad was a new army room. I won't lie, when my brother told me they were giving him an army room I immediately pictured camoflauge from floor to ceiling.  Oy.  In reality, there's not a lick of camo in there, but it's very much an army bedroom.

Nick and Beth waited until the kids fell asleep on Christmas Eve before switching out everything in his room.  I'm glad they did it all at one time instead of bit by bit...I love a big reveal!  This was not a complete room overhaul, but instead just new bedding and a few new accessories.  Furniture, paint colors, and major things like that stayed the same.

These pictures are all courtesy of sister-in-law, Beth.

As you can (hopefully) see in the pics above and below, before the army room, Jett's room was all about cars, trucks, and trains.  He used to be OBSESSED with Thomas the Train and any kind of car, truck, object with wheels.  It was amazing to me how early he could distinguish between dump trucks and diggers and bulldozers and cranes.  I probably would've called them all tractors or something.  And he knew every Thomas character way before that.

So when he graduated from his crib and his "outdoorsy" nursery, all kinds of automobiles moved in.  His bedspread was just a madras plaid, but hidden underneath it were sheets covered in cars.  His throw pillows had cars and so did his rug.  What you can't really see in the picture above is that my mom had even embroidered trains, trucks, and cars on his bedskirt.  The wall art above his bed (painted by my sister-in-law Erin) was of a dump truck and tractor.

Here's a picture looking head-on to his bed.

See that shelf above his bed?  It holds a couple - you guessed it - automobiles, as well as Jett's trophies.  It looks like he also stuck an army man up there.  Maybe he secretly knew what was coming...

Now let's fast-forward to what Jett got to see Christmas morning - his new army room!

Here it is mostly done.  The rug is still there but I'm not sure that that's staying.

No camo.  It's a Patriotic army room.  The shelf above his bed now holds 3 clipboards with real army manuals.  He was excited to show that off.  Every good soldier needs a working set of walkie-talkies, so he's got some of those up there too.

His new bedding came from Pottery Barn, I think, and is an olive-y khaki.  If I'm remembering correctly, it has an army patch on it somewhere, maybe where it's folded back in the picture above.  My mom made him a new blue gingham bed skirt and Beth made the throw pillow.  She also made his plaid throw blanket that my mom monogrammed.

The wooden flag on the wall was made by my brother.  He's so proud of it.  It's painted on four 1x4s and trimmed with 1x2s.  I won't tell you exactly how many times it took him to get the measurements right for 13 stripes instead of 14, but let's just say 3rd times a charm.  According to Nick, it's an old timey flag so he didn't have to do as many stars.  I think it turned out really well!

My favorite accessory in the new army room is this picture that sits on the dresser by his bed.  It's my maternal grandfather and also Jett's namesake.  He was a funny guy and a sweet, sweet man, my Pepaw Jett.

Thanks for sharing the pics, Beth, so that we could all see.  I think the room turned out great!  I asked Jett if we could have a sleepover soon and he said yes, but that I couldn't sleep in his new bed.  Guess I'll just have to admire it all from an air mattress on the floor.

Christmas Wrap-Up

I didn't intend to take a week vacation from blogging...it just kinda happened.  I'm back now, though, with so much to catch you up on.  This holiday season has been one of the best and while now, after the fact, I'm kinda sad I don't have many pictures to show for it, I'm glad that during the moment I put my camera down and just enjoyed being there.  Of course, it helped that I completely forgot to take my camera with me on several occasions, but even when I did have it, I didn't take many pictures. So much has happened since I last really blogged.  We hosted friends for dinner and sang carols together.  We spent as much time as possible with family, from the tiniest nephew all the way up to our grandparents.  We had tickle fights, painted fingernails, and decorated gingerbread houses.  There were gifts given and gifts received.  Presents were stolen (but only when playing Dirty Santa) and stockings were filled.  We attended church services and took a flight out of town.  Books were read, puzzles were put together, and new video games were played.  A baby was born and we traveled to see said baby.  We snuck in some woodworking and furniture painting.  We attended a New Year's Eve party and counted down at 12.  Kisses were given and resolutions made.  And today, after having eaten our black-eyed peas and cabbage, we're primed and ready for a good year.  We are grateful for a fresh start in 2012 after being reinvigorated from the celebration of our savior's birth.

Basically, the last two weeks have been so, so good.

I'll just touch on the things I have photos for.  My pictures will be unedited - straight out of the camera - because I'm typing this on my brand new laptop and photoshop hasn't been installed yet.  I am in love with my new laptop even though Doc broke our "no secret gifts" rule by purchasing it.  I'm not holding much of a grudge, though, since it's much fancier than my old one...

Since we traveled at Thanksgiving to see our "country cousins," that meant they came here for Christmas.  I can't even tell you how much fun it is to have us all packed into one house.  It's loud and chaotic and I love it.  (But it's also nice when we go home and things are quiet.)  Roany, the shy cowgirl, let me paint her fingernails.  We bonded over my Slick Slate nail polish and by the time she left, we were good friends.  She even spoke to me and gave me a hug!

Roany was gentle with Baby Ramer.  She petted him very carefully.

See these two blurs?  That's Bren and Parker.  They spent a good portion of the evening jumping on their Mimi's couch.

This year, my mom bought a cute little gingerbread house kit.  The house is actually plastic so all you have to do is assemble it, add some icing, and it's ready to decorate.  Then you can just wash it off and use it over and over again.  She nominated me to help the kids decorate it and while I really enjoyed it, I think next year I will add the icing before calling them all to the table.  It was stressful doing it with so many little people watching and begging to add candy!

They were thrilled when we finally let them go at it.  I really think this may have been one of my favorite moments of Christmas and am glad we'll have this new tradition.  Do you know, this was my first time to ever decorate a gingerbread house?!

They worked so diligently - all seven of them.  All the chaos and yelling was gone...it was dead silent while they worked on their house.

Sometimes they got busted for eating the decorations.

So many little hands, still decorating...

They were so proud of their hard work!

Hee hee...I think this is funny.  There were several of us standing in a row taking pictures, so when it was my turn, I raised my hand so they'd all look at me.  This is what I got in return...

(Carter's and Parker's hands are raised too, but they got cut off.  Crap.)

They did a pretty good job of making a mess!  I think Henry the dog probably found lots of dropped candy on the ground.  My mom managed to get the table cleaned up and the house became our centerpiece.

Ramer didn't get to play with all the candy, but I still managed to catch him smiling at his mama.

These two monkeys think they are the funniest people in the world.  And when one gets going, the other joins in and it just gets LOUD!

Earlier in the week, my mom went to the Dollar Store and found some festive glasses for all the kids.  There was an attempt at a group picture but mine didn't turn out.

The next night - Christmas Eve - I tried again for some star photos.  I'm not sure why it looks like one of the points got cut off on the stars.

Sweet siblings.

My oldest brother's family.

Mine and Doc's annual Christmas tree pic.

And then Parker ran into the room wearing a new shark hat and shark mittens, so we had to pretend to be sharks for the camera.

Ramer's mom put him (in his carrier) down on the floor and Jett and Bren sat down and sang Away In A Manger to him.  It was probably one of the sweetest things I've ever seen.

Before we could open presents, we sang Happy Birthday to Jesus and made sure we all knew why we celebrate Christmas.

Every year, my dad gets me a new hat for Christmas.  It's his thing.  Here is this year's hat.  Pretty cute, I think!

My Christmas Eve pictures end there.  I did catch this shot of my dad the next day, in between celebrations.  Can you say exhausted?  Even the dogs needed a nap!

Our kids didn't make it to our house until late in the day on Christmas.  I took a picture of each of them while they opened their stockings and that was it!  Sad, right?  I guess I was too busy playing Elf and passing out their gifts to take pictures.

Unfortunately, that's as much of a photo wrapup I can do.  I forgot to take my picture to Indiana with us and I didn't take it to our New Year's Eve party either.  I suppose those memories will just have to live on in my head.

I won't wait a week before coming back, I promise.  I've got lots more non-Christmas related things to share!

A Busy Weekend

Hello, friends!  I hope you've all had a good weekend.  We sure did.  I'm sure lots of you are now enjoying a nice Christmas break from work.  I wish I could say the same, but alas, I'll be at work tomorrow (and the rest of the week, too).  I'm here to write about our weekend, but not the weekend that we're wrapping up now, rather last weekend when Doc's parents were in town for a visit. I want to get this documented before I forget! Friday night we had a big birthday celebration.  Doc and Wyatt had both had birthdays that week, and Anna's got one later in the month.  My family joined us for dinner and festivities so we could all celebrate together.

Here's Doc with both of the birthday kids.

We took the lazy route and just ordered pizza for dinner.  I was even too lazy to bake a cake, and ordered a variety of mini cupcakes instead.

Can I just say that lazy tastes goooood.  Mmm, I wish I had another one of those cupcakes right now.

After dinner, there were lots of gifts to be opened.

Doc had a little helper (Parker) with most of his presents.

Doc and I were excited to give the kids their candy boxes full of money.  They seemed to really like them!

They were careful not to move any of the money until after making sure everyone got to see all the folded money (and our mad folding skillz).

We had them guess how much money they thought was in their boxes and neither of them got close.  They were pleasantly surprised when we told them how much they got.  Add that to all the other money and gift cards they got from everyone else, and they're loaded!

We invited Bill and Pat to come visit this particular weekend because on Saturday, both kids had their end-of-semester music recitals.  We were glad their grandparents were able to come watch them play.

Wyatt played two Christmas songs on the piana, and did a wonderful job.

And Anna played two songs on the guitar.  One was a Christmas song and the other was a Selena Gomez song that I did not know.  She also did a great job on her performance.

Immediately after the recitals, Wyatt had a basketball game.  Here's a picture, but since I have about a gajillion of them, that might have to be a post of its own one day.

The second half of the weekend was much more low-key.  We had dinner at home with just the six of us that night.  Sunday morning, Bill and Pat were finally able to hear our new preacher at church.  It was not a typical Sunday, though, because the children's choirs performed their Christmas play.  That meant we got to see both Jett and Bren perform.

Speaking of our new preacher, here he is beat-boxing for one of the children's choirs.  Like I said, it wasn't a typical Sunday...

After church, we just had time for a quick lunch before dropping Doc's parents back off at the airport to fly home.  We were so glad they were able to be here for so many events!  And we hated seeing them go, but are glad that we'll be seeing them again soon in just a few days!

Baby I Got Your Money

Our kids are at a tough age when it comes to buying them gifts.  They're too old for toys, but they still want something cool to open.  We begged them to make wishlists for Christmas and their birthdays, but every time they did, money seemed to be the reoccurring item.  So Doc and I decided that money was what we'd give them...for their birthdays, at least.  Their mom is taking them on a Disney cruise the first week of their Christmas break.  It's in lieu of birthday parties and is their gift from her.  Even though Anna's birthday isn't until after they're back from the cruise, we decided to go ahead and give them both their money before they left so they'd have it to use as spending money. But we couldn't just give them cash in an envelope.  Where's the fun in that?  I racked my brain with how we could get creative with this ho-hum gift.  Scavenger hunt?  All change and make them roll it?  Earlier this year, a friend from work told me about how he and his wife folded a bunch of one dollar bills to make a lei for their son's graduation.  That sounded cool, but I couldn't figure out how to make the lei work for December birthdays.  (Guess I could've tied it in to the Caribbean cruise.  Hindsight...gets ya every time.)

I had already told Doc that we needed to figure out a way to creatively fold the money when I spotted this idea on Pinterest.

(found here)

Yessss!  This was a great idea!  We could creatively fold the money like I wanted to, and now we had a cute way to box it all up to be wrapped.  Winning!

I sent Doc to Target to pick up two cheap-o candy boxes.  Russell Stover was the winner.

The first step in this little project was to eat all the candy figure out how much of each bill we needed.  Our candy boxes didn't come with the little individual paper wrappers, but instead had little dividers to make different sized compartments.  We could work with that.  We went back and forth on how much money to give the kids, but eventually decided on $10 for each year of life.  That meant $110 for Anna and $120 for Wyatt.  I let Doc figure out how to evenly divide the totals into different sized bills...a task right up his alley!

A couple trips to the bank later and we had all the cash.  We struck out on half dollar coins, but did manage to snag enough whole dollar coins to use.  Each of them got one fifty dollar bill and one twenty.  I can't remember the amounts after that, except that Wyatt got one more ten dollar bill than Anna since he's a year older.

We spent a whole night folding money!  Doc gets most of the credit because he started while I was wrapping Christmas presents.  He got creative with his folding...here is Wyatt's box around the time I joined in to help.  You can see a couple that center on an E for our last name, and one that has a 12 for Wyatt's age.

I, of course, had to pull up some tutorials online so that I could fold the money into fun shapes.  My first dollar bill became a heart for Anna.

I also made her a ring.

For Wyatt, I made a Star of David.

And, the one that I was most proud of (and the one that took the most time and the most re-doing)...a shirt and tie!  Yes, that's only one bill and there was no cutting, taping, or gluing involved.  Bam!

Doc stepped it up a little on his folding, too.  He made this one for Anna that shows her birthday - 12/25.

I was pretty impressed with this one he made for her - it shows her name AND if you look behind the n's, you can see an 11 - her age this year.

And finally, this last one that he made for Wyatt totally cracks me up.  He gave Andrew Jackson some Bieber hair.

I forgot to take pictures of the boxes when they were finished.  (Obviously we rearranged Wyatt's from that initial picture after we had folded more bills.)  The kids loved opening them and seeing all the money.  Actually, first Anna saw the box of chocolates and said she sure hoped there weren't too many with nuts.  I'm pretty sure she was glad to see the money instead of just a bunch of chocolates!  I guess Forrest Gump was right about those boxes of chocolate...you never know what you're gonna get.

Cowboys and Cowgirls

Saturday morning after Thanksgiving, we got up early to visit my cousin Paige's house and all her horses.  She and her family live right next to their arena where they ride horses and even host ropings.  It's a place we love to visit any chance we get! Paige's husband, Roger, was stuck at work so he couldn't join us.  Sometimes he and Paige will show us how they rope cows...it's so much fun to watch.  I love seeing them in action!  I felt bad that we put Paige to work saddling horses for us, even though she swore she didn't mind.  When we first arrived, she set out on a four-wheeler and brought in a group of horses.

Parker climbed high so he could see the horses running into the arena.

And you know, once one boy climbs up on something, it's only a matter of time before another one follows him.

Bren climbed up on the railing, too.  She was "bigger" than me!

Aren't the horses all so pretty?

While Paige worked on getting horses saddled, we worked on warming up to the big horsies by petting them.

Some horses were hanging out in stalls, so we walked over to visit them too.

Paige and Roger had lots of hay stacked in the arena while we were there.  I guess that's food for the winter?  The kids all had so much fun climbing all over it...if you don't have a jungle gym or playset in your backyard, may I suggest just buying some hay?

It took a few minutes to get them to all climb down for a group photo.  I'm pleased to say that this is the first (and only) photo of what would be ALL of my grandmother's great grandchildren.  Eleven of them!  She was only able to meet seven of them before she passed away - she never met our two and Sevens and Ramer weren't born yet - but I have no doubt that she watches them from Heaven all the time.

Before Ramer was born, Sevens was the youngest.  You have to be careful with him - one look in those big green eyes and he'll steal your heart.

This is Carter and Roany.  They're both 3, just like Parker and Bren.  Yep, four cousins born within 6 months of each other.

Before too long, the horses were ready for riding.  These two cowboys were the first to hop on.

A few laps around the arena and then Parker was switched out for Wyatt.  Two dudes in one saddle was a pretty tight fit!

These three climbed up on another horse.  They are much more comfortable up there than our city kids!

I love their little hands holding onto each other!

Wyatt got brave and rode all by himself.  I wasn't expecting it, but I'm proud of him for doing it.

Most of us took a turn at riding a horse.  (Side note: my dad, pictured below, has a horse named after him.  Uncle Steve (the horse) was unfortunately not there so we didn't get to see him.  Rumor is that Uncle Steve is actually a pretty nice horse and might bring in some big bucks when they sell him!)

Yes, even I got on a horse.  It was a very short ride, but it still counts.

Here I am being nice to my horse (Jim Bob, or was it Chief?) so that he'll be nice to me.  I promise this was just an action shot, and not some kind of glamorous photo shoot.  There is not a big box fan off to the side blowing my hair for special effects.  That's just the real wind.

Parker was in love with riding the horses.  He rode with Doc, his Poppy, his Uncle Nick, and then even rode by himself!  This picture cracks me up.  Hello, bed-head.

This is the response I got when I asked "Who wants to be a cowboy?"  I guess his parents better start saving up for some horses.

Bren never worked up enough courage to get on a horse, but she did give them kisses!

Of Paige's three children, Roany is the one that loves being on a horse the most.  She is painfully shy around all of us, but around the horses, she's right in her element!

I loved watching her ride this horse.  Paige said that with the adult saddle, it's pretty much like she's riding bareback since her feet don't reach the stirrups.  She also said that with a kid-sized saddle, Roany flies!

Nick and Joel: cousins.

You would think our kids would be enamored with the horses, but guess who really stole the show?  Jingle the kitten.

I think there was more than one kid that wanted to take Jingle home with them.

I hate that we didn't have more time with the horses, but we had to get back for a delicious lunch before hitting the road back home.  Just for fun, I'll leave you with a branded horse's rump...
